Preparing the Cabin For Winter Use - Wood Stove and Loads of Lumber

Our first attempt at DIY masonry stone work has gone exceptionally well. We still need to wrap the base in stone or wood, but it looks f great already!
Slowly but surely we are looking to turn to off-the-grid solutions for power and waste. We would like to grow as composters and gardeners. For now though, our focus is still on the cabin building process. Thank you for joining us.

Suggestion for you both, get one of those clip on microphones to attach to your clothing, and you won't have to get up close to the camera as much. You would be able to walk a good far away with one of them and we all would be able to hear you both better!!! Love your cabin building! Doing a great job on it! Cory is quite the builder, he really knows his stuff! You are a sweet young couple!!

I have found “frying” (or grilling on a flat surface) my bun, bread or bagel with butter in the pan first is an alternative when one is without the convenience of a toaster. Simple and satisfying! That would turn that “9” into a 10!

You need something on the wall behind stove to protect the wall from the heat - stone is good and some people use tin - turn the stove around so you can see the fire in the box - caddy corner stove - beautiful place you have there!

You should have put fiberglass seam tape on the seams before morter is put on as it will crack over time.

Take a bit of time to build a good set of outside stairs up to your patio door, a landing up to would also be within normal building practices before winter arrives. Pre-made at home and trailer them to the cabin is the easiest. Just a thought

We plan to build stairs and a deck next summer. The plan was to do that this summer, but we weren’t at the cabin as much as we would have liked. I like the idea of building the stairs at home and bringing them there.

First place I'd heard of making those gummy bear brats was Grundhofer's in Hugo, MN. All the people I'd heard mention it said they liked them. They just don't sound appealing to me whatsoever, so I haven't mustered up the courage to try them. Based on your reaction to them, I think I'll keep holding out.

We hope so! It’s just a scratch coat. We may add to it in the future, we may not. But it has concrete heat safe backing…. So it should be safe either way!

I go between cooking brats in a pan and boiling them. I just Googled it and it sounds like boiling brats can leak flavor. So there’s that, but I like the softer meat in a brat when I boil them. I figure if it’s cooked it’s fine🤷‍♀️. You’re making me want to try the gummy bear brats again but cooked differently…

Because we burn wood at home for heat and we use the trailer to move the wood around as we are making firewood in the summer. But we did decide to leave it there this time. We really don’t like bringing it back and forth 😅.
