I fed a bunch of meals or gave Kongs in the bathtub, as I knew my Golden Retriever puppy would eventually be spending lots of time there, de-mudding! After a while I’d add a little water to acclimate him to the running faucet and hand-held shower wand, too. He adjusted well and is perfectly content at bath time now!

For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕

A couple things I found really helpful when starting my pup training last year: 1. A house line, or a soft leash with no loop or anything that could catch on furniture, which the puppy wears at all times that he's not crated or tethered. Literally, all times. He gets used to dragging the leash everywhere, so a thing chasing/bumping into his heels is no big deal, and if something happens where we need to intervene (say the cat walks through the room and the puppy suddenly decides to chase), the leash is there and easy to step on, so we can anchor the puppy safely while we deal with whatever the situation was. No involuntary games of chase and no accidentally teaching the dog that they can misbehave without consequences if they dart out of reach. Also just really great for their safety, if we need to prevent them from running into or eating something hazardous (say, someone drops a glass of milk and it shatters on the floor). 2. Puppy costumes, a variety of harnesses and straps, chains, tassels, whatever can dangle and drape around a puppy without risk to the pup (always with supervision). Getting him used to a bunch of sensations around his whole body helps with any harness and training or working tools he'll need to accept later in life. Especially helpful for mobility dogs and draft training. 3. Literally sitting down on the floor at different spots around every room and looking hard for anything that might seem exciting to explore as a puppy. It's amazing how a room that seems totally dog-proofed can have a bunch of unexpected hazards if you only ever look at it from a human perspective. Outlets, for example, are right at puppy eye level; it's probably not feasible to remove all such hazards, but at least knowing where they are will help you keep the pup away from them, or interacting with them only under supervision. 4. Music. We don't tend to have music playing in our house and there's no TV, so except for pulling up KZbin videos on our phones, there's no noise in the house. The public world, though, constantly has music and televisions and sirens, etc, which the pup will accept more readily if he has already heard them at home. We tried to play a bit of every kind of music we could think to expose him to, and pulled up KZbin videos with sounds he might hear (like owls, bagpipes, construction sites, donkeys, children playing and crying, people speaking in various languages, etc). Picking something to play to him while he was settled on place and chewing happily made sure that he heard such noises every day in a comfortable context. Looking forward to what other folks suggest! Thank you as always for another excellent video!

Something I've done in the past is once the breeder and I have decided which puppy I will be bringing home, I send a t-shirt and or towel that has my scent on it to the breeder so that the puppy can get used to my smell and also helps with the ride home, and I also have the breeder start using the name that we as a team my self, my 2 older boys and the breeder have chosen when the puppy is still at the breeder's.

Love your “self-scented play item” idea! That’s exactly what I did once, many years ago, only I used a pair of socks. My dog’s breeder, way on the other side of the country, made sure my pup got to play and sleep with them as he grew. The idea was he’d be comforted by my scent right off the bat when he came home to me. That pup, an English shepherd, became so incredibly closely bonded and devoted to me tho, there was nothing else like it-more devoted than any of my dogs before or since, including basenjis, an ES and a border mix, none of which I was able to do this with. So, not a big data set, and no doubt there were other factors, but…how could it hurt? 😊👍❣️

Sara Ondrako has an awesome video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket (Dollar tree sink mats, baby blankets - I just double knot my strips so they don't come off in the wash). My younger Dobe, now 5yrs old, still refuses to eat his lunch if I put it in his dish - has to be in his snuffle mat. Of course supervise if you have a dog that will start eating the fabric and just remove when all the treats/kibble are done. I think people really do their dog a disserve if they never leave their dogs at home alone. I know a service dog is a bit different, but think about if you have to go to the hospital and your spouse wants to be with you, not home watching the dog. They have to be ok by themselves for periods of time - in a crate without barking - often times a requirement at hotels. When they get spayed/neutered, you don't want their first experience in a crate to be at that time and neither does your vet. Love the satiation method with all the frozen Topples and Kongs too - they're teething until about the 6 month mark then next phase where they're setting their jaw pressure. My older Dobe only ever had one accident as a pup but was in a crate whenever we left the house until the 1.5 yr mark - just from a destructive chewing standpoint. Hope that helps.

The breeder suggested that I enclose the area just outside the crate and put a potty pad there overnight. When he needed to pee, he came out of the crate, then put himself back to bed. It worked really well, actually. My dog is a Havanese, so he was pretty tiny as a puppy. This might be more challenging with a larger breed. Anyhow he's almost three now and still loves his crate. He's lying in it right now with the door open, just dozing. Of course he doesn't need a potty pad any more 😃 Edit: I forgot to mention my yoga teacher recommended that I spend a lot of time on the floor so I could do yoga in peace without him thinking I was down there to play.

It is Kickass Labrador. She produces lovely dogs. That being said, this breeder breeds for hunting and sports dogs, and not for service dogs. I had a particular set of desires that made these higher-end dogs a good match, but she does not breed for the purpose of service work and sells her dogs to high-end sport homes.

I hold a special place in my heart for Parmesan! Are you going to be renaming the puppy, and if so what names do you like so far? :D Also, would you recommend GSDs for service work? I’ve done a bunch of research myself and have decided they are the breed my service dog will be, but I’m curious!
@DoggyU3 ай бұрын
Definitely will be re-naming. Not 100% set on a name yet, but I'll be doing a live later this week to talk about my picks! Regarding GSDs. I trained GSDs for guide work for a decade. A good GSD for guide work is really nice. However, I don't tend to recommend them for other types of service dog work unless you're getting a temperament-tested adult. Here's a video on the breeds I do recommend and why: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-zhnp9r8iceLM
