Sailing Yacht Florence

Sailing Yacht Florence

Күн бұрын

We call out the Australian Coast Guard for the first time and get lifted out of the water to check Florence's bottom ready for sailing to Indonesia. The clock ticks away as we try to get all of our work done on Florence in under 72 hours to save an extra day on the hard. Sailing to a country with limited facilities to maintain and repair a yacht requires some careful planning and hard graft. After all the hard work we then decide to chill out with the koalas, manta rays and a couple of salt water crocodiles...

If you are fairly up to date please put all your dry goods/powder milk in sealable containers and get rid of the paper where bugs like to lay eggs. Did you check and shake any fresh veggies for bugs. Do you use perma marker to mark your canned goods once lables are off. also if your bilge pump goes all that paper could come off and clog. I'm so excited to see your next video you both bring such excitement to sailing it's refreshing. : )peace

You guys are quite the pair. I'm sure sail life comes with its hardships, as does many forms of living. But whats easily noticeable about you two is the balance in which you operate. Adventurous, fun loving, but organized/ efficient. This is a great example for youth couples (I'm 25 myself) and i applaud you both. I will be purchasing a Catamaran in the next 6 months for occasional sail (nothing near what your doing.) But i hope we encounter one another at some point in the future. Keep on, keeping on yall!

Just a wee bit of artistic license there with the crocs... 😉 They will usually do a runna when you get anywhere near them. Sometimes people think they are coming at the boat when they go into the water, but of course they’re actually just going in to hide. However a nesting croc, back from the waters edge, is another story! Happy travels.

Genuinely superb videos thanks! From personal [!] experience, good to store food in bilges for the reasons you gave but I've always removed the paper labels and written the contents on the container with an indelible pen. Not only do paper labels block bilge pumps just when you might need them but they also become illegible over time! Nothing like mixing gravy and custard when guessing the contents! Good sailing and thanks again.

All went well while you were on the hard, some delay, but no extra expense, like you said, all good. The Mantas are amazing, rather large. It's hard to believe they eat plankton. I've seen people doing some pretty dodgy things to get there fuel for cooking in Indonesia, and like you said, there are ways to get diesel and petrol, but the quality isn't good,so I think your decision to stock up ahead of time is the perfect one👍 You know, I drove all the way to the tip of Cape York, and couldn't find a single crocodile, looked really hard,so you did well.I think you're going to love the people of Indonesia, all the best👍☺️

just to make yourself happy when dealing with the Indonesian government, to have our car registration change from one Island to another take us a months of wait and back and forth to our "DMV", that is not including the fine because "we are late" and endless waiting for the civil servant and police to stamp our document plus in this digital time, they still want us to pay by cash. once i have a boat, from the time i owed it to the time i sell it, i still cannot have it register.... but again we do have to understand that the country is big and we have a lot of people. but you are lucky because not many Indonesian realize that we have such a big country and you can sail non stop for two weeks and still in Indonesia. I hope many Indonesian will watch your film as it is very inspiring..just too bad my wife cannot stand sailing and when I have to go do what you guys do, I probably go with my cats. keep safe.

So happy to hear more news from you guys. Sorry about the cost per day for hardstand. If you'd had a lot to do it would end up being a huge expense. Perhaps they charge so much to get people to use their services instead of having a yard full of diy'ers. What river were you in looking for crocs and it looks like you worked out they are easier to see at low tide on the exposed mud banks etc. Going back into the water is the crocs natural defense mechanism so it obviously viewed you as a threat. Go figure. Are you going to leave Australia from Darwin or from Thursday Island? Thanks for another video.

When I was 8 to 10 years old, I'd 'work' with my grandfather s raping barnacles off old wooden CrisCraft boats, then recaulking the seams. I recall using a paint scraper, we didn't wear gloves or use masks. My hands and arms always got cut to shreds. Once this was completed, then came marine paint, several coats, followed by marine varnish. Lotsa of work. Torres Strait islanders spear manta rays, and I understand they are pretty good to eat. I'd rather watch them up close. Crocs do like mangroves! I'm sure you guys know about the weird tides in the Torres area. Coral Sea-Pacific Ocean twice a day, Arafura Sea-Indian Ocean three times daily. This makes for really strange unpredictable currents, and odd reef exposures. Lots of reefs between Cape York and Badu and Moa islands. Should be a lovely trip!

We trust our eyes and nothing else. We are now used to charts that are wrong, satellite images that are missing reefs etc etc. It no-longer worries us, we just always make sure we keep a very good look out and treat charts/satellite images as a 'rough guide' to what might be there. We use Navionics because that is what our chart plotter works with, they seem good most of the time, and satellite images of anywhere with reefs.

I might be missing something obvious, but how did you paint under the stands( supports)? Because I didn't see any spots with uneven paint when you got back into the water. (Btw. great video as always)

We had the stands moved half way through painting. We just didn't have time to film that happening!

@@SailingYachtFlorence OK. Thanks for the quick answer. Since I started watching your vids I have put sailing on my bucket list. You make everything seem so easy, smooth and fun. If I had to guess I would say you are more happy with your modest yacht then most super-rich people.

what books are you reading to get information on pricing for different things in different areas?

Hi Eric, We look at blogs of people who have traveled through that area recently and also reports from friends who are a year ahead of us. Books tend to be out of date very quickly.
