In preparation for a ~4,000nm 20-30 day ocean crossing, we decided to ensure all our safety gear is up to date and in good condition.
This week, we visited the Sea Safety Service store at Clarkes Court Marina in Grenada while they serviced our Plastimo 6-person life raft. We got to see what our raft includes, as well as learn the best way to use the raft in an emergency.
What’s in our ditch bag: • BOAT LIFE | Day in the...

This was really good! I enjoyed hearing all the tips he had. Ditching is not something you want to think about - but you really should go through everything in your mind periodically. It sounds a bit morbid - but in the plane we are always intuitively looking to see landing options in case of a catastrophic failure!

Yes- such important information! I can imagine it’d be equally important on a plane. It’s not fun to think about, but it’s necessary.

Good video. Sounds to me that lithium batteries and LED flashlights are the way to go. Waterproof, no bulb to break, and batteries store 10 years and won’t leak.

@@HollyandRay We have to re-certify rafts on our plane as well when we go over extend open water trips.

I’d definitely consider removing some of that stuff and replacing it with sachets of water, all life rafts on military ships contain water, I don’t know if that’s just a military thing or if you can option that on civilian life rafts, but I don’t see why not. You can also throw containers full of fresh water over the side as long as they’re sealed, as fresh water is buoyant in salt water and will float without needing air in the top of the container, when salvage companies want to raise something from below water in a controlled manner, they actually pump fresh water into this big bags and not air as you usually see on TV.

Absolutely. We have a ditch bag that we would bring in an emergency that has water!
