I prefer speaking English to learning grammar. I’d like to study abroad after graduating ,so I should learn English as often as I can,even make it a daily routine. I believe each effort is a stepping stone to my final achievement-becoming a good teacher.I object to people talking loudly in public which makes me annoyed so that I can’t focus on my works. I really learn a lot from BBC learning English!

Hi Dan, so there is no rule to determine what to use. The verbs you mentioned are so common and most learners know them, but the question is: is there a list of these verbs? Is it a big list? The case is not easy all the time because sometimes we come across some phrases that confuse us, for example There were some hurdles 'to playing' or 'to play' soccer on this pitch. What about using ' to' as a preposition or as an infinitive after nouns or adjectives?
@bbclearningenglish
@bbclearningenglish 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nawar. We are sorry, but there is no definitive list that we are aware of. The best thing you can do is get a good dictionary and check in each case. We realise this isn't ideal! As for confusing examples, remember that there are always exceptions to every rule! Language is fluid and evolves all the time.

At 1:11, you complicate things by saying "I'm interested in learning TO SPEAK English." It's not representative of the subtitles and introducing another verb (to speak) could be confusing for learners given the fact that yet another 'to' infinitive ("and beyond!") appears.
@bbclearningenglish
@bbclearningenglish 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! You are right in that, given the topic, things might have been made more complicated in this respect. We will keep it in mind for the future. It's worth noting that those are not 'subtitles' per se, but notes to accompany the video. They only contain the main point of each section of speech. Finally, we liked the joke! To infinity and beyond to you too!
