Thank you, this was very helpful. I have a question, which one is correct: on holiday/ in holiday? And between: on the holiday/ in the holiday?
@ellii11 ай бұрын
The expression "on holiday" means you're on vacation. It can refer to taking a trip or even just staying at home if you're off work. E.g., "Sorry I can't reply to your email this week. I'm on holiday until Jan 29, 2024." Using "a" and "the" with on + holiday isn't common because we'd usually use another noun instead (e.g., "I was so relaxed on the cruise." / "Whenever I'm on a trip, I call home once a day."). Also, in + holiday isn't common at all. When referring to time, it's more common to say "during a/the/my holiday" or "while on holiday." (E.g., "I saw many beautiful temples during my holiday in Japan/while on holiday in Japan.")

Hello: I have seen that movie three times. It's fabulous! Katie has enjoyed playing cards since she was a child. I have been studying for four hours now. I think I need a break. It has been raining all day and now the street is full of water. I have read that article already. It wasn't very interesting. Proffesor Jones has written a book for twenty years. It's almost finished. My family have taken three trips to England. It's a beautiful country. We have worked on this project since October. It's due next week. Are those ok? Thank you so much!!!
@ellii2 ай бұрын
Excellent examples! Just a couple of corrections for you: Professor Jones has been writing a book for twenty years. It's almost finished. (professor, has been writing) My family has taken three trips to England. It's a beautiful country. (It's much more common to use a singular verb with a collective noun like "family," though "have" is also possible. I just wanted you to know that a plural noun sounds very strange to most native speakers. I would definitely use a singular verb with "family.")

Hello again: Andrei didn't use to exercise very much. Now, Young-Hee uses to visit her grandparents every Sarurday. When I was a child, I used to playing outdoors all day in summer. Are these correct?
@ellii10 ай бұрын
The first sentence is perfect! The second sentence needs to be this: "Now, Young-Hee visits her grandparents every Saturday." We use the simple present for repeated actions like this. We can't use "used to" when an action is ongoing in the present. The third sentence is almost right, but you need the base form after "used to," not the -ing (progressive) form. The correct sentence is "When I was a child, I used to play outdoors all day in summer."

Why the preppositons goes at the end of the questions and sentences? Hi agan
@ellii10 ай бұрын
Hi again! For questions, it depends on the question and on the formality. E.g., Which day does the class start on? = casual / On which day does the class start? = formal (or When does the class start? = also casual). For sentences, the preposition is usually before a noun, not at the end. Do you have a specific sentence where the preposition is at the end to ask me about?

So if we use in for times of the day , is in the night correct?😅😅

We use "at" for clock times and with "night": at 1:30, at midnight, at night. We use "in" for periods of the day except "night": in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. ("Night" is an exception.) Hope that helps!

There are a couple of different meanings for this phrasal verb. The most common is to exit a large method of transportation (e.g., I got off the bus/ship/plane). Another one that's less common is when a criminal isn't sentenced by a judge (e.g., The murderer got off on a technicality so he won't be going to jail). Hope that helps!

Hi Helen, the verb you need there is "take" in the idiom "can't take your eyes off someone." "Get off" doesn't make sense there. So the correct sentence is "Maria is so beautiful that Bryan can't take his eyes off (of) her."
