I’m no expert but…
I’ve been asked several times over the years to put together what I pack and how I prepare for some of my more remote and risky Adventure Rides across Australia. Well, here it is.
Grab ya gear; Lets go!

With you 100% on the paper maps mate. Whenever I go solo remote I always pack them and my Suunto compass. Every 30 minutes I stop, take a GPS reading, mark my position on the map, and zero my trip meter. That way I always have a pretty good idea of where I am and how far I am from help/water/fuel etc.

Two main aspects of navigation. Anticipation and confirmation. Anticipate the conditions ahead and confirm your location as you go. That way, as soon as you go off the route you should be able to correct it quickly. Even more important when you are walking with a 20 kg pack on your back lol. Thanks for watching.

Great video Steve, I like to see what other riders take out on remote trips and how they prepare. 20 years as a soldier is probably the best prep you could go through. Stay safe out there mate!

I've been a Motorcycle mechanic for 40 years and I really admire you and all the guys that do those trips and dont mind saying I would be hesitant to do it myself but I love the videos so I hope you dont mind if I give you just one piece of positive - call it info not advice: Those cans of Beans...are not designed to be heated with food in them - specially not on a fire or embers where you could get really hot spots. Have you heard of BPA? That is a toxic plastic that is part of the sealer to keep the food off the metal, and if you heat it will saturate the food with very high levels and not only that but if it got really hot could create new unpronouceable chemicals that are very bad for the crown jewels! So please get a small (dual purpose!) light billy or something to heat them in so we dont have to see you on the other side sooner - but much later! Note: "BPA free" is a con - there is no substitute (yet), they just use BPB or C or D or S and they are all just as bad. Cheers from NZ

Hi Gerry, Yeah, It's not the first time I've been informed of that. For the record (not that it might make any difference), the cans are not placed on coals or in the fire. They are placed near the fire to warm up slowly (usually about 20-30 minutes) and rotated several times so they are warmed thru consistently. Would that make a difference? I dont know. I'm 65, had a good life (very fulfilling) but dont have a death wish. I did give up smoking many years ago cause i didnt want to die of a smoking related cancer. A mans gotta eat. When heated in the can, there are no dishes to wash and sometimes water is a rare and precious commodity where we go. Thanks for your concern and thanks for taking the time to comment. See you out there.

Guys like yourself and Shadower 75 show life skills and a strong positive attitude that not many mere mortals possess. It's a testament to the quality of military training. Particularly Aussie Army training. Makes you think compulsory training for young people after school would be worthwhile in Australia.

G'day Steve, I've been a subscriber for some time due to your no BS and doco style of videos and really enjoy what you put out; way too many bike vlog people for some reason try and make a trip a hollywood production. I'm your age and have ridden since my teens including racing, bought my shaft-drive Adv bike in 2015. One thing I'd add for quick-response personal safety is what I do, I have my blood group & 2 ICE contacts' numbers label-printed on a recessed area on each side of my helmet which is close to the chin-strap buckle. I got the idea from racing, when you are out cold Responders will go to that area before the bike and that may save precious time. When my daughter noticed it, she said "I wish more road riders would do that". She's a Paramedic here in NSW.

The last rescue plan after the cup of tea Don’t be afraid or too ashamed to say please. That’s a lot of stuff how about some Timelapse of you loading it all on the bike. Can’t wait for the video. Another great vid. I am no survival expert, but I did a course with Bob Cooper and learnt a lot. Also doing trips with scientific based 4x4 tours in deserts. If you dont mind me adding, a small tin filled with survival gear Bob Cooper sells is fantastic. Things like large clear plastic bag for water collection, condies crystals for water purification, sugar cubes (crush cube with condies crystals for fire) small hook and line for catching fish, mirror and many more small items for survival and rescue. You have done a good service putting up this vid. Congrats.

1:52 I see Steve you recognise talent when you see it. Have been a fan of Lindsey Stirling for many years now. Having done over 200,000 miles on bikes over 16 years I can to some degree 'tune' to where you're coming from, and totally agree with your love of remote riding. 1976 was when my riding came to an abrupt end. i.e. the end of a tray-back ute broken down and left up on the blacktop in outer Sydney (Doonside). Totally covered in mud so no reflection, and the guy who owned it pulled up just past it from the opposite direction on high beam. 40mph and probably 20 feet max distance when I first saw it. The right rear hingepin hit dead centre of my BMW r75/5 headlight, then my l/knee & femur. Nearly lost it. Around 26 Patella fragments over a 3 inch diameter radius, femur smashed two places, and now just have tricepts. The muscle group that pulls your leg completely straight all gone and tendons stretched means first ten degrees is floppy & no control over. But incredibly no pain from the damaged knee joint. I did after 25 years develop arthritis in my left ankle 'though. 1st July I leave on my four months 2022 Ghan Sojourn, camping out in my 1996 Subaru Outback. Steve really appreciate your content. You take us to many places many people could/would never get to see otherwise. Good job. :)

Mate .. soz had too laugh when I saw the can's of baked beans. Broke my jaw a few years back and was blitzing baked beans, with mashed potatos & gravy. Needless to say after 8 weeks I wasn't a good one to be around naked flames! Excellent video as usual. On the money with " this is what I pack " ... everyone is different, bikes, bags etc .. Essentially breaking it down to pack what you need, safety first, and there is a back-up if you need it. Keep the videos coming ... Stay up-right. Cheers :)

Thanks - that was great. Have a great time, don't take unnecessary risks (like the pot calling the kettle black). Hope to see some more vids from the trip when they are ready. Enjoy. PS, I get what you mean about being attracted to the vast and often dry wilderness and I also get what you mean about the four kinds of people. Between you and I, I reckon the possibility of getting into a situation and then carefully plan and work your way out is part of the attraction of such a trip.

I can certainly see your years as as a soldier coming through in this video. Preparation, anticipation and realisation Steve. Paper maps are a must: We went for a hike from NSW to SA and on the return journey from Adelaide to Broken Hill I put the GPS coordinates in as Broken Hill and I learnt a HUGE lesson from that. Instead I now look at the map and GPS the next town. The GPS took us on that occasion right through the Barossa Valley which was great for scenery, but took us way of our route destination. Also I recently watched a movie of American tourists who came to OZ and went west to Alice Springs following their GPS coordinates and ended up on a gravel road and he lost his life. You are correct in saying always have maps and use GPS to the next town or thereabouts.

Oz can be a trap for overseas tourists who are not prepared. They read maps that say 'Anne Beadell Highway' or 'Great Central Road'....how hard can it be? Glad you are a bit wiser after your experience from Adelaide to BH. Sometimes we have to learn the hard way. Thanks for watching.

Another great video Steve. I have watched all your videos, maily over the covid lock down period and like the way you think things out when they get a bit shitty. I see all these riders doing the Simpson and and Big red up and back, and then saying that was the hardest thing I have done and it almost killed me. These people are always in a hurry, time challenged or make it that way. You seem to take things slowly and calmly, I recently purchased a DR650 and modified it to do the Cape and hopefully the Simpson when the weather is suitable and your videos have made me very aware of the consequences if you are time poor and making those bad decisions. People ask how long will it take me to do these trips, I say as long as it takes to get there and back I'm in no rush. Again thanks for the videos and you knowledge and wisdom, hope that one day I come across you on one of those outback roads.

@mongreldogproductions

Hi I’m F, I think bike fitness is essential and can play a huge part in how successful the trip can be. I also look out for ‘warning signs’ on some of the less fit Riders I’m with so that fatigue doesn’t get ‘em first. I’ve seen a lot of men in many different stressful situations and there always early signs. I think cycling (any exercise) has allowed me to enjoy Adventure Riding a bit longer than most (I’m 64….hopefully still got a few big trips left in me yet). Thanks for watching.

@Mongrel Dog Productions Steve, I'm not far behind you at 59 and try and get as much time on the bicycle as I can to keep fit. I witnessed a case of heatstroke last week on a fishing trip to the NT, where *without any warning*, a fit 65 YO Victorian, collapsed while fishing for Barra on the first day from a boat in still, hot humid conditions. He recovered ok over the next 24 hrs and we think it was due to not getting a chance to acclimatise to the NT. Not sure it wold have been as happy an outcome if he wasn't fit.

Great video Steve, thanks for sharing! Always a pleasure to participate in your adventures through KZbin - as we say in South Africa - 'Lekker!!". As an ex-army medic I'm always interested to hear if you've ever had the unfortunate pleasure of having to open that tupperware box on occasion - I always overdo the tools and medic kit - but rather too much than too little I say. Maybe one day you'll give me the privilege of showing you around South Africa....very different but much the same.....

'Lekker' hahaha. I am a first generation Australian, the son of Dutch migrants. I been fortunate on the trails as far as emergencies go....nothing life or death (although had some near misses). I think South Africa have a lot of things in common, vegetation, climate, natural resources. We (SA and Oz) were joined once a kazillion years ago. Thanks for watching.

Looks like your well set up for remote travelling, the only thing id suggest is taking hydrolite sachets, they're useful if you either get sick or for hydration purposes.I never travel to remote places without them.

Well done Steve, especially like the tyre inflation choices. My 1200GSA canbus sometimes won't power my compressors. Goodness knows why? But I've been caught out by it. Thanks for sharing and I've always felt you were military at sometime. Cheers dave👍

Dave, the 'jump starter' also operates my compressor. Saves having to remove the side cover and operate the compressor straight off the baatery.

Great vid. Thanks and greetings from Inversneckie 300k north of Perth, Caledonia. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I see in the preview map you’ll be near Lake MacKay. Interesting.

Hi Mr J. I think the closest we get to Lake Mackay is Kintore. We will be taking the Gary Junction Road from west to east. I’ve not done parts of that road before and are looking forward to it. Thanks for watching.

In relation to your jump starter Steve, a good one that will jumpstart pretty much anything & charge all your bits & pieces is the GOOLOO GP2000. Long ice on it & a variety of different applications. I watch every single video you put out & am completely in awe of you. Grab your gear, let’s go! 🤙🏻
