Should be planting them inside the hills - along the center of their ridgelines - instead of down in the deeper trench. Also makes digging & harvesting the crop later - a boat load easier. The hills provide drainage and the bushes don't have to break through 7-8 inches of soil before setting on foilage. 3 to 4 inches deep (Missouri) is fine, especially early in the year when frost warnings are prevalent for the 1st 2-3 weeks after planting.

Great idea with the PVC! I am going to copy it now, but use colored tape for similar size sticks so I don't mix them up. I think I am going to modify my tiller with a furrow attachment after watching this, looks like it'd work real good too.

Rich, as with about any soil any place, a good triple 17 fertilizer will work. You can also use a triple 13. Just do it a few weeks BEFORE you plant to allow it to set into the soil, or else you can burn your plants before they even grow.

rather then covering the potato to its full depth just pull enough dirt over top to protect from the elements...........the leaves will show up quicker ergo more faster growth then pull more dirt over till it is completly buried...........then start to hill as usual.

The rototiller you have there, that's an Italian brand isn't it? I bought an 8 hp Troy in 1997 and your tiller resembles an Italian brand that the store was also selling. The Italian brand had shaft drive to the tines where my Troy is a belt drive.
@TheKiltedHomesteader4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a BCS from Italy. No belts, all gears and driveshaft.
@SuperSaltydog774 жыл бұрын
@@TheKiltedHomesteader Thanks for the quick reply. I thought it might be. When I bought my tiller the brand from Italy was also on display at the garden center. It was more expensive than the Troy, a good $500 more, so I bought the Troy. But the BCS was a better tiller with the shaft drive, just not in my budget. @smallblockchevy10224 жыл бұрын
@@TheKiltedHomesteader To be clear, I wasn't being serious.... I was just messin' with ya with my comment. 😁 But since you responded. Yes, in a technical sense according to SOME definitions of the word, you are correct. However, according to those same definitions, every home on earth can be considered a homestead, so in that sense it kind of defeats the purpose of using the word, and you may just as well use the term "homeowner," or even "home renter." A homestead in the legal sense is a 160 acre parcel of land, granted by the government to a person who is willing to work the land for 5 years. In historic, old English sense of the word, it references a plot of land adequate in sustaining a family. The modern, widely accepted definition would generally be an off-the-grid property that is self sufficient. So are you just basically interchanging the word "homestead" with the word... "Home?" Anyway, I was just kidding. I wasn't, nor am I being malicious.
