Our neighbors had a moderate infestation in the apt below us Orkin came and sprayed twice so far. Two weeks later they found a small area of bed bugs in my daughters room. Orkin ordered us to follow a list they had left us. They had us wash all our bedding, pillows, curtains, clothes. Almost ever fabric surface that could be washed. It costed 100's of dollars in quarters at a laundromat and well over 40 hours of work. On top of this every room in our small apartment had to have all furniture moved at least 12 inches away form all walls. That meant we had to empty and stack everything in every bit of furniture someplace so it would be light enough to move. Then leave it all out two weeks until the next time they sprayed. Our kids have no surface space to eat on. We have all our clothes in tied garbage bags and plastic locking bins. They are stacked to the ceiling. The landlord is evicting the tenants below us for not following Orkins instructions and other non related reasons. Since a small amount of bed bugs had been found in one room of our apartment Orkin informed the landlord that one of our children must have come in contact with one of the children from the other apartment and that is how the bugs must have got into our apartment. No other way. Our children have nothing to do with the people that live below us. The landlord has threatened to make us pay for the treatment to our apartment. We have requested Orkin do a heat treatment to make sure there is no bugs in our unit. The head tech told us that they would not do the heat treatment even if we paid because the bugs may spread to other units. The bugs have already been found on further inspections in other units near the source in minimal amounts. Why won't Orkin treat all the units with heat if it's the most effective way to treat the bed bugs?

Very Good advice, been in the business for over 20 years and own a company in Iowa. Most of the prep work I have the customer do is to clean the rooms. Not thoroughly just pick up around the house so the technician has room to work safely. Prep has a place in heavy infestations, but for the most part, give me a room free of clutter and you will have a happy tech and a bed bug free house in no time.

I'm sending this around to all my friends! To everybody I know! I recently had bed bugs & had to do the IMPOSSIBLE 'prep work' Jeff speaks of! Throughout my whole apt!! AWFUL!! Going to also make sure to send this to my friends who work for our city and county. I'm looking forward to us here in San Angelo, TX also starting up our own 'Bed Bug Task Force' and hold conferences that will educate our pest control people, land lords, tenants, HUD, health dept, and public in general. Thank you, Jeff, and all at Bed Bug Central! You are literally a gift from God!!

I live in a duplex and my neighbors just moved out. Come to find out they had bed bugs. My landlord inspected my house for bugs and I do not have any. However, they are treating the house my house is connected to. I’ve been given the bed bug check sheet list and two days to get it done before they come and fumigate the house next door to mine. I am beside myself to say the least. I did not know they had bugs in their house. But never the less I always do bug prevention in my home. I can not stand any kind of bugs. I treat my baseboards mostly with peppermint and tea tree oil. I put out sugar and baking soda around in cabinets to ward off roaches. I spray red pepper around windows and doors for spiders. I also sprinkle diatomaceous earth about for bugs. That lets you know on what level I do not do bugs. And still. This is happening. I’m devastated. And they are telling me if I do not do all of this prep work the bugs will leave the house next door and come into mine.

Great video. If you don’t empty your drawers on a light infestation that’s getting prayed with Temprid FX, how do they spray around the dresser? We have seven dressers and a walk in closet. We are bagging the closet and washing those items, but we see ZERO signs of bugs in drawers. We’ve only ever seen two adults that we found dead over a week, right before seeing the first stage 1/2 nymphs. Over a two week period, we’ve seen and killed maybe 50 total stage 1 nymphs and a small number of stage 2. We’re talking extremely beginnings of the infestation... what the pest guy told us “an introduction phase”, where the first eggs haven’t become adults to start a second generation. Would love to keep the clothes in the drawers and simply have them sprayed, but how do they do that without spraying inside?

Bed Bug Removal I started to notice some bites in January of this year but new nothing about killing bed bugs. To prepare I watched video after video showing the different methods of removing them. I could not afford a professional service so I did this. I waited until we had a forecast high of 115F or 45C. I did this so the bugs could not go deep into the walls and survive. With the outside temperature hot enough to kill them on its own, I blasted the heat and fans inside. I held between 122 and 126 for almost 8 hours in my trailer, using heat from three 1500 watt baseboard heaters. Then instead of renting big fans at about $40.00 per day I bought a 20 inch or 50 cm box fan from Canadian Tire for the same price, to add to the 5 household fans I already own. If your area is larger buy more fans. I had plans to buy three box fans but they were sold out because of our heat wave. For me this was OK because I have a floor standing air conditioner and used the fan to compensate. With a combination of laundering and heat drying all fabrics, including all bedding and clothes, then heating my place up to a sufficient temperature, I am now bug free. People remember heat treatments work best at the hottest part of the year when bugs can not find holes in the vapor barrier and crawl near the outer wall to stay safe, because outside temperatures are too hot for that option. In winter heat will not work for this same reason, but during hot days it is pretty much a sure kill, if you have enough heat and fans. Hope this helps some of you as well as it did me. My total cost for laundry, fans and power, was about $190.00 and I now own all the fans. The heaters I already owned. If you need to buy them this of course this will up costs. To give you an idea my trailer is my holiday trailer and the floor area is 200 sq. ft. Scale your equipment up as needed. If it happens again I am now prepared in full . I think this guy may be on to something. So here is my thoughts , as we recently got bed bugs and are now prepping and will be eliminating later tod... Do as this guy says & then, if you still are getting bit, etc... take it a step further and powder all baseboards, outlets. Basically this powder kills on contact as he has already shown you how with the coasters for under the bed legs. One reason to dust baseboards is to prevent the critters from climbing through the walls which could contaminate adjoining rooms. Another reason to do more dusting is if any thing has contact with the bed...such as a wall or if blanket is touching wall/floor then potentially they could crawl onto the bed and bite you. Oh and I would also recommend along with the bed leg coasters to also powder bed rails/frame. Just another step in stopping them dead in their tracks.

We did the prep work which has been very difficult because my 20yr old daughter is Autistic and she keeps throwing tantrums and wanting to put everything back "where it belongs". When I told my landlord and the *very* unprofessional exterminator why the prep was going so slow, they told me to "get her a board game and she will get over it". The exterminator wouldn't give me a set time frame because he says "I am always available" which made my landlord scream at me for my delay and threaten to evict or sue me. I set up a day to take my daughter out of school, have my mother get an aid to fill in for her at work (she takes care of an elderly patient at home) and take time off work for myself and get a hotel room. We packed everything up in our apartment (treatment was going to be in every room) as per the "directions" from the exterminator (which mainly said in each paragraph, "buy the Zapp bedbug heater") and also move the furniture away from the walls. We went to the hotel and I informed the exterminator the door was unlocked and he could let me know when he was done. Hotel checkout was 11am. The exterminator emailed me at 10:30am and said "you didn't do the prep correctly so we are not doing anything. You can return home at any time." I emailed him back asking him to explain what I didn't do correctly and 24 hours later I have not had a response. *In his email he cc'd the landlord thinking it would scare me. I lost a day's pay from work, I paid for a hotel, my mother lost 1/2 day of work and my daughter missed school. Now everything is packed up in bags and boxes and I just want to scream! This exterminator had come into my apartment for 5 minutes to "investigate" (wearing a miners hat with a lamp!) because a neighboring apartment had complained to the landlord and now he's blaming me for "spreading them".

Question: I found bedbugs in my house because my little girl had bites on her neck... went crazy looking and found the bugs in the master bedroom, not on the mattress but on the headboard wall, along the ceiling and wall seam and in the corners of the picture frames hanging above. Aside from that no real signs of an infestation. My question is does this sound like a large infestation or did we catch it pretty early? Any help would be great Jeff, I’m really stressing and it’s giving me serious anxiety.

LauraB I didn’t not, treatment would have cost over 2000$!! I did treat myself though with positive results and no signs after about two weeks. First thing: clean clean clean!! Bag up all linens and stuffed animals after washing and drying on very high heat. Second: steam clean all mattresses and furniture, then spray with a proven residual insecticide (I used econoraider, found on amazon). Encase mattresses and pillows. Get a growth hormone inhibitor, found on amazon as well, it won’t kill the remaining bugs but it will render them sterile and they can’t reproduce. Apply DE to base boards and cracks. And last but not least is the barrier traps on the legs of the beds. It’s a stressful process but after about 7-10 days you’ll need to vac up the DE and reapply the insecticides and growth hormone stuff and DE , it was far cheaper than the 2000 and we haven’t had any activity since the second treatment. Also don’t be afraid to over clean!! Hope this helps, there’s a large community for getting rid of these little bastards.

Christopher Morrow thank you for the replay. I never thought this would happen to me, it is a literal nightmare. I’m tempted to toss by bed and sofas. I’m watching so many people say how hard they are to get rid. I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel but I know it’s there.

LauraB I feel your pain, it’s a psychological nightmare, but it DOES subside. It’s a process but you can get rid of them. I didn’t get any sleep for probably 2 weeks after I found them but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our lives our as normal now as they were before, only now I’m more inclined to investigate any and all bite marks on myself and family.
