I worked at a fabric store for years and years, I bought patterns all the time when they were .99, I have hundreds, they would work in a pinch as toilet paper. As well they come in to use as fire starter and or bartering item( I have the fabric and the thread too)

Also if you do use a bum cloth, make sure each person uses their own bum cloths (different colors or patterned cloth for each person), in order to reduce cross contamination of bugs. Especially if one person develops diarrhea or similar. Also clean each persons bum cloths in seperate buckets too. While travelling throughout India many years ago I had to use my hand with a bucket of water nearby.

I've been stocking up on packs of napkins from the Dollar tree, cutting them into 4 sqares, and stuffing into gallon ziploc bags for smaller needs. Also small coffee filters which can be sprayed with soapy water and used as wipes. After the TP shortage in 2020, I stocked up big time. I'm good to go for myself cause I live alone. Family members would wip me out in three weeks cause no one is ready for what's coming. They get napkins, filters, and a complimentary spray bottle!!!!

Please allow me to share some culture shock with fellow peppers. I have mentioned in a few previous posts that I relocated to the Republic of the Philippine Islands six and a half years ago. Westerners visiting for the first time who only stay in a tourist location (high-end hotels) may not know what I am about to share. TP is NOT a common thing here. Yes, you can purchase the product in all large markets and even the small SARI-SARI stores that are on every corner usually stock a roll or two for those who want it. The practice here is the use of a bidet, but still not the separate fixture that you will be thinking. Many low-end homes are equipped with a small toilet bowl that you flush manually with a bucket of water. A small dipper is used to wash yourself after completing your business. High end homes will have a flush toilet. The next step in " luxury living " is to add a sprayer hose set-up very similar to the sprayer hose and nozzle on the kitchen sink. That, my friends, is your bidet! A holder is screwed to the wall where you place the unit when you are finished using it. In many Asian countries, you would be considered filthy if you did NOT wash yourself after using the CR (Comfort Room). The fact is, our septic tanks are not designed to handle the additional load of TP. The general rule is, if you provide TP, to also have a covered trash receptacle where used TP is placed for disposal. TP is NOT flushed down the system. Now, I already know that someone will ask so here is the answer. I have three CRs (Comfort Rooms) in my home all equipped with TP holders in the tile walls. All three CRs have TP available. I personally use a few sheets to dry the lens of my glasses after a shower. The " transition " to soap&sprayer really was not difficult. Fun story: my Father-in-law added a pressure tank and pump to combat the extremely low water pressure in his area. He set the pressure very high. After using his CR, I teased him that it was " like using a pressure washer from the garage."

Was in Taiwan at a rural bus station. 1986. They had unisex squat bathroom with no obvious tp. Men on one side, women on other side. Woman next to me saw my dilemma and pointed to a long hose and pantomimed aiming it at my bum. Worked great. Bit damp but hey, I was on an adventure!

Yep, lived without for awhile. While the tp is preferred, I already had the squirty bottle & cloths. The warm water is delightful & the cloths got placed immediately into a bucket with warm water & bleach. Had to wash & dry them about every other day. Kept the bottle around after the $$ crisis passed. The warm water feels good on the bum! But I wasn't sorry to toss those cloths! Am currently saving up fabric for any future tp crisis.

Here's what many people may not realize or understand. When that emergency hits, and everybody starts using those FD foods, and eating somewhat or entirely different than what they normally do.... THEIR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM will respond. Other things may also occur where your "business" is affected. Specifically.. bouts of diarrhea are very likely to occur..and the amount of paper or cloth you need to use will change - drastically.

Vinegar actually doesn’t disinfect, use it with hydrogen peroxide… but Hydrogen peroxide w soap + hanging on line in sun should work very well. I highly recommend a bidet. As long as we have water, we don't worry about TP. Luxe makes bidets that attach easily under your toilet seat and hook up easily. They start at about $35. I have been using and appreciating their products for 10 years. Quite satisfied with their products and customer service. I had a knob crack way are the warranty was expired and they sent me a new knob totally free. I didn't even pay shipping. I am not an employee of this company, nor a relative of an employee, not sponsored by then on any way. I have one pack of TP for guests. If water goes out, will use the flannel clothes. TP takes too much space. Rather use that space for water

Hey, how 'bout those big bags of red cotton shop rags? They are super soft after you wash 'em, but wash them separately! The red bleeds (no pun intended). I found this out by accidentally making pink tshirts, oops. I think Costco carries them, I know Harbor Freight does (buy in bulk with a 25% off coupon from a sales flyer). I bought a gazillion, store them in a metal trashcan cuz the mice think they make suuuupersoft nests--which, in all fairness, I guess they would. Sorry, mouses.), and I'm good to go---pun intended!

I was wondering if an updated version includes the flushing warning, or other disposing details... Then I thought of those sanitary wipes we all are using for the lockdown issues... Then I thought of baby wipes.... In the flannel squares I see the diaper image, and washing and reusing... it all depends on your situation, I guess... whether you have enough water and power to do laundry. I think baby times assume the hot water and long laundry cycle would be the thirty minutes you stated was necessary to sterilize used cloths of any kind. In a no power situation, I see soaking in a dedicated container for that kind of laundry... don't you? :-) I sure hate the thought of life without toilets and toilet paper. Yuk. I hate porta potties, but that's better for all that newspaper and phone book remedies. :-)

Saw one prepping video show that you can cut a pool noodle lengthwise and form it onto the top edge of a bucket to make your own cheap toilet. I would add a cheap trash bag inside to catch the waste. Can get biodegradable ones if you want. Also, if we were flexible like the Asians have made themselves, we could squat so low that nothing would even get on us when we go to the bathroom. However, I am WAY too old to be developing that kind of flexibility and strength, lol.

We honestly missed stocking up on toilet paper at Kroger and now it's all gone. However we went through our library and came up with some alternatives. We've got them stacked in the hall and if we don't use them, we're going to have a bonfire when this is all over. Here are some of our selections: The Commuinist Manifesto Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels The Mass Psychology of Fascism Wilhelm Reich The Sexual Struggle of Youth Wilhelm Reich The Painted Bird Jerzy Kozinski We had considered using our copy of the U.S. constitution but George Bush already used that.

I'm not embarrassed to talk about this, but I am going to be brave and share this idea I have had for a while. They sell those little pot scrapers and they make plastic scrapers for painting or cleaning up caulking, etc., at dollar stores and of course hardware stores (Home improvement centers for you hip people) and most are less than $5.00. My idea is to use the scraper to clean off the stuff that is sticking to your butt and then to either spray or rinse and then air dry or wipe with cloth or some type of disposable wipe or paper towel. Mostly that's what we want to do, remove remnants of poop and then cleanse ourselves. And the scraper can be cleaned by dragging it against a leaf, log, another tool and washed off or sanitized with bleach, hand cleaner, soap and water or whatever we have available.
