Molestation like Euron upon his younger brothers doesn't have to be about sex or sexuality, it's more about power: as the aggressor, Euron would have been the dominant, asserting himself over his victim, trying to make them feel lesser for being taken in the way a man is supposed to take a woman. It's a lot like the psychology of prison sexuality, and is especially jarring in a culture like the ironborn which includes the practice of men taking mainlander women as sex slaves (salt wives). Simply beating his brothers wouldn't have the same effect, since ironborn are raised for war and, we can assume, to take a beating - but they would not be prepared for sexual assault. Euron will have sex with women out of lust, but he is willing to go so far as raping other men to assert dominance over them; this doesn't seem out of character for a man seen as cruel even by ironborn standards. A good comparison in television I can think of is Tiberius from the last season of Spartacus - he raped two characters, one female and one male, both cases out of a desire to assert power rather than sate any kind of lust. Disclaimer: I don't claim to be an expert in psychology by any stretch of the imagination, but I have taken more than a few psychology classes, and my sister is a social worker. I just thought it might help to paint Euron's molestation of his brothers in a more power-assertion manner, rather than purely sex.

It's not a sexual orientation. It's a psychiatric disorder. And yes, most child molesters don't have it and are opportunistic offenders.
@d4n4nable

I think you're being reductive here when you say it's not out of sexual desire but out of desire for dominance. Clearly, both are connected. Sexuality is pretty complex. Yeah, a lot of people who do have sex with children are not paedophiles in the sense that if they had to envsion someone "hot" or "sexy" they'd usually imagine an adult. But it's not JUST to humiliate or dominate that they molest minors. They might simply do it out of opportunity. In any case, wihtout a sexual component in their motivation, someone will not be able to rape a person.
@X525Crossfire
@X525Crossfire 8 жыл бұрын
Of course there's a sexual component, but as cited in my prison sexuality example it does not have to equate to one's actual sexual orientation - the dissociation between a person's orientation and situational male-on-male sexual violence. My original post was not meant to be "reductive" or to make a broad generalization about pedophilia and child molesters, but to add a new perspective to Euron's actions that would be more in line with both Euron's character (and his psychological mind-rape of Aeron).

I find the argument that Harlon was mercy killed quite compelling. I would guess that his name may even be an allusion to this fact. The short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" written by Harlan Ellison is about a character who longs for death and is essentially paralyzed. And Harlon almost literally has no mouth because of his greyscale.

When they went to the register he asked her to scan each Twix individually, just to avoid "confuzzles". When the lady started saying the price Preston kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly. I think it really was Euron who hired the assassin that slew Balon. He wasn't lying. The Ghost of High Heart dreamt of a Faceless Man on a bridge with a drowned crow (Euron "Crow's Eye") on his shoulder. This checks out with what Euron claims. He didn't do it himself because he was still at sea and would arrive the next day, but he did pay the assassin. It would have been easy for a Faceless Man to infiltrate Pyke weeks or even months before the day on which the deed was agreed to take place. The real question is how the Faceless Man would know the exact day Euron would arrive, so could conveniently kill Balon a mere day before.

Sorry if I'm mentioning something you'll cover in future parts, but I can't help but notice that Euron has an incredible amount of Military Intel at his disposal. He knows the Redwyne fleet made slow progress around Dorne and there's another fleet trying to catch him from behind. Though how does he know this? I suspect there's some telepathy involved. Then there's the Krakens off the Stormlands(or was it the Stepstones? not too sure right now) mentioned in the Arianne preview chapter, which they explain by there being a lot of blood and corpses in the sea. Euron mentions throwing a lot of dead people into the sea this chapter, I think it might be connected. Perhaps Euron even uses the Krakens to spy for him and that's how he knows the whereabouts of all the fleets?

I see what Euron is doing similar to what the Three-Eyed-Crow did to Bran. He is coercing someone with telepathic ability to awaken. Now the TEC was rather forceful and said that Bran needed to fly or die, but Euron seems to be even more violent. I think it fits with the theories out there that some entity tried to awaken Euron, but failed, causing Euron to go mad. He now attempts the same type of forceful method on others that was attempted on him. My view is that the TEC is Bran from the future. I don't think it can be Bloodraven as I think there is only one time when someone associates him with that title and it is Coldhands who then immediately corrects that he's the last Greenseer. Also Bloodraven has a thousand eyes and one, and not three, whereas Bran sees the Crow pecking his forehead, causing his third eye to open, and his telepathy to awaken. Also Bloodraven says that he has been watching and waiting for Bran to arrive and says "I was a part of your first dream." In contrast the TEC is actively guiding Bran's thoughts and invading his mind to push him forward. You'd think BLoodraven would mention this behaviour and not just explain that he has been watching.

I feel that Euron is not an atheist----- he believes that HE is a god. He wants to break all of these holy men and show them that their gods are all powerless compared to HIMSELF--- he thinks he is as powerful as a god, and gets joy out of showing all of these people how impotent all of their gods are. If he can torment holy men of every religion without any recourse, it proves that all of their religions are false. So, not only does he get joy out of breaking their beliefs in god, but it supports his own megalomania complex

Good points on the telepathic connection between the torture victims, though I would argue that Euron is not so much simply awakening their gifts as he is attempting to birth a god. By this I mean that he wants to create some sort of shared concept between these telepathically gifted men that he can then hijack and ride (taking the concept of man-created-god to the extreme). Essentially, it'd be similar to the weirwood net birthing the old gods... or possibly even whatever is powering R'hllor. The question there is, why would the Crow's Eye believe himself powerful enough to control this new creation? Does he believe that Aeron's hatred and fear of him (coupled with Euron's potential latent telepathic powers) are reins he can use?
@Jooooger
@Jooooger 8 жыл бұрын
It's a really interesting concept that prayer is in fact just an attempt at telepathic communication with a greater being. Looking through the science-fiction lens here is much more interesting than the fantasy lens. It's unfortunate that so many people can't distinguish telekinesis and telepathy in these stories from magic. So many times I've heard "Well, even if it is telepathy that's just magic!". No. In Star Trek when Spock mind melds with someone is that magic? Of course not. Telepathy has been an established concept in science fiction for decades. Also I really like this chapter because I personally think it puts the final nail in the coffin when it comes to people wondering if gods actually exist in this universe. The answer is clearly no. Therefore, it becomes necessary to reevaluate a lot of the story. Where are these prophetic visions and dreams coming from? What is the source of "magical" powers? Is it still external or internal? etc. If Preston's theory is right I think ASOIAF may be the go to example for fantasy/science fiction hybrid at least or a completely new genre altogether.
@Jensaw101
@Jensaw101 8 жыл бұрын
Jooooger In the universe of Star Trek there exist the Gods of Olympus and a race of beings that can move faster than light under their own power, as well as manifest entire realities as they wish. Using the series to define what isn't magic seems incorrect. Sure we can start trying to uncover pseudoscientific explanations for these beings and their actions without appealing to an ambiguous magic, but what difference is there between science that requires the rules of the universe to be conveniently different than those found in reality, and magic? Nothing except theming.
@Jooooger
@Jooooger 8 жыл бұрын
The difference is scope as Preston has said a lot. If it's magic, it's magic. End of story. If Spock's mind meld is just magic then I'll accept no further explanation. However, if someone says "Vulcans are capable of producing deep theta waves to stimulate brain to brain communication." or some such technobabble then we have now entered the realm of science fiction. Yes, George thinks that's just "furniture" or as you say just "theming", BUT the issue is how we examine this world. In LOTR I don't care WHY Gandalf can cast spells. It's magic. In ASOIAF I absolutely care how Mellisandre can cast a spell. If a very important theme of the story is false prophecy and fake magic then it is important to define what is actually magic and what is not. It could just be a simple technobabbly, pseudoscience explanation and that still would change the entire scope of the story. It will certainly change people's perceptions of the story since sci-fi and fantasy have different themes and tropes that are relied upon to tell their stories. If ASOIAF is actually hidden sci-fi many of people's preconceived ideas regarding common fantasy tropes are flat out wrong. E.G. Many people expect a LOTR type "Battle for the Dawn" because "That's just how fantasy stories end". So it absolutely matters if its magic or science.
@Jensaw101
@Jensaw101 8 жыл бұрын
Pseudo-scientific explanations are a different school of magic than the more nebulous magic of typical fantasy, and psionics is different in flavor than most detailed system of divine or arcane magics, I agree. However, that difference does not make telepathy realistic, nor does it make it science. All it makes it is a school of magic with detailed explications -- something that exists in other settings, including Tolkien. You may not care why Gandalf can cast a spell, but others have cared in the past. There is an entire mythology and genealogy behind it. And in a universe where everything stems from the songs of Illuvitar, explaining Gandalf's magic with a handwaving argument about song is hardly different than explaining Spock's telepathy using a handwaving argument about biology. I'm not attempting to claim that the magic of A Song of Ice and Fire isn't based on telepathy. I don't know enough of the series to make such claims one way or another, and Preston's arguments are otherwise quite satisfying. That said, the idea that telepathy isn't magic is pushing things too far. If magic is broadly defined as powers and concepts that people in bygone eras speculated to exist within their world and to be hypothetically within their grasp, despite reality not conforming to those speculations, then I fail to see much difference between that and the pseudoscience of more recent science fiction (science fiction-fantasy, if you will). After all, said pseudoscience is more or less defined as powers and concepts that people in recent eras speculate to exist within our world and to be hypothetically within their grasp, despite modern science not often providing much support -- and in many cases actually discrediting.

There's this debate about what is "science fiction" and what is "sci-fi". Personally, if you give me a pseudo-science explanation I will classify it as sci-fi. I understand what you're saying but I don't agree that it makes no difference. Sure, the ACTUAL mechanics of telepathy and magic in our reality may be indistinguishable at a deeper level but that's not really what I'm getting at. Yes, telepathy has no good basis in science in our reality now. However, in the 60's and 70's it was a very hot topic. Numerous scientific studies were done. Obviously it was debunked but still, the greatest science fiction writers in history all tackled the subject of telepathy as a science fiction concept. Heinlein, Herbert, and Sturgeon all have written about psi powers from a science fiction lens. If you want to get into a "true science fiction" argument then you have to look at it from the perspective of the author. What do THEY think is actual science? What are the rules of their universe? Couldn't future scientific studies find the concept of psi powers to have some evidence? Isn't that mere possibility enough to classify stories that tackle the idea from a scientific perspective as "sci-fi"? "Science-fiction" that only tackles concepts that are confirmed by modern science is interesting but in the end limited. Some authors really get into the "science" in science-fiction, others get into the "fiction" part of it. In either case the genre is not diminished from their contributions. Just different styles.

So for Euron, "holy" = telepathic. I assume that its genetic, like warging or dragon-riding. While their religion or culture would influence their powers, you could find these people in different populations. Through prayer, the holy men's/women's telepathic ability would allow them to hear a collective consciousness, or hear certain voices, or see visions of people's thoughts, depending on the person and practice. Sounds similar to what we've seen in his other stories. That would explain why some people's "prophecies" come out right sometimes (like Melisandre or the GOHH): because the visions show them what people are planning or thinking about, but not the actual future.

I've been watching/loving this channel for quite a while now, and I just realized Preston only has 132k subscribers.... how can this be?!?! These are CLEARLY the absolute best ASOIAF videos out there, and The Last Harpy has like 50k more than that, even though his videos are very very short and the only real info we ever get from him is filming/show leaks and the odd theory that someone else came up with... WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?! Also, I'd LOVE to see a collab with Order of the Greenhand, PLEASE?!

Never once does it say that Aeron prays in silence. In fact, Enron saying he could hear him praying as he came to his room seems to prove this. Just like many devout christians do while kneeling before their bed at night, he clearly prays out loud. The whole idea of silent telepathy prayer is a giant, unneeded, leap. Still love these videos though. Can wait for part 5.

Preston, would you consider making an overview video in, say, chess terms? Who are the pieces (and how powerful they are, are they pawns or maybe rooks and queens), who's making the moves and which organisation they belong to? I know you're kinda doing that, but a quick comprehensive summary could be good... All the best!

Euron killed Robin & Harlan because he wanted to watch them die, attempting to frame them as "mercy killings" is absolutely laughable. Whether or not their deaths could be considered a mercy is irrelevant, all that matters are Euron's motives. I have to say Preston, some of your inferences & assumptions in this episode are a bit of a stretch.

Awesome like always. I suggest you use the word esper when referring to telepaths since it is a word that is used in fiction a lot to refer to people with psycic supernatural abilitys. Esper is a useful term since it includes everything from telekinesis and pyrokinesis to mind-reading and shared conscience.

Harlon resides in a windowless tower, slowly turning to stone. Bran climbs a windowless stone tower with gargoyles. Everything leads back to Bran. Ahem, these leaps of logic are starting to sound like the way Batman of the 60's TV show would follow a clue along a trail of randomly associated words to come to the answer. I wish I could come up with an example, but perhaps someone else can.

Prayer is not always silent. Its not atypical to mumble/whisper prayers, especially when you recite a common one, sometimes like a chant. So Euron could have heard mumbling/whispering that had vocal patterns of a prayer.
@KissatenYoba

So, Euron hears prayers and thoughts of other people and because of that he hates gods, who appear not to hear prayers of their followers or are plain evil. Thus he mercy kills random people who suffer and pray, punish priests and fulfills wishes of some bastard girl to the point she falls madly in love with him. Also, he cuts out tongues of his crew in vain attempt to silence their thoughts.

I think you underestimate the Faceless men as an organization, it seems plausible that they have sleeper cells around the world. This would allow them to carry out assassinations in short order by notifying their cells via raven message, dead letter drop, or telepathic message. This network would allow them to restock on materials while out on a mission. For example, Jaquen getting basilisk blood and the iron coin in the time between the attack on the nights watch and seeing Arya at Harenhall. I know this goes against your ass coin theory.

Hey Preston, what are the odds that when people say kings blood they actually mean Garth Greenhands blood? I read somewhere that men and lords alike offered up their maiden daughters to him and he spread his seed far across Westeros. Also Garth was considered not just King, but King of all men. Bartheons do have Targaryen Blood, however the original Storm King was said to be a descendent of the first men and Garth, much like the Starks as well as almost every King from the age of heroes. What do you think of this theory? One thing that sorta supports this is when Melisandre offers to make a shadow baby with Davos. Now we know for a fact that Davos isn't Valyrian and most likely certainly not a King. So why would he have power in his blood like Stannis. Unless his ancestor was also Garth. Makes you wonder how many men in Westeros have this special blood.

I've long thought the Dusky Woman was Pree, though the theory she's Euron seemed more perverse, and I think this chapter does nothing to dissuade that possibility. I'm fairly certain the Warlock isn't Pree, and his rambling sounds like a cry for Pree to save him, meaning he believes Pree to still be alive That leaves 2 possibilities. One being Pree escaped, which seems unlikely since his only realistic means of escape would be death. Or two, that Pree sold out his fellow Warlocks in exchange for his service for Euron. Makes sense since Pree is certainly the most powerful of the group so he'd be the one of most use to Euron, and if I'm right he's on his way to meet Dany whose death at his hands is an obsession to the point that he'd do anything, even condemning his fellow Warlocks, to accomplish. It fits nicely I think, and the doesn't the Warlock muttering Pree over and over sound like a man that was just tortured, screaming in desperation, turning to hate, as he's utterly betrayed by his own kind? Any thoughts on this Preston?

Tbh when Euron was in Slaver's Bay he was already having some plan in motion. He was in Astapor for Unsullied, so he wanted to have a land army for something. Likely subduing Iron Isles. Faceless Man was probably on his ship already. I would say that Dany having dragons only changed his plan from taking Iron Islands into taking Iron Throne.

Hi Preston, I was just wondering - besides the psionic powers, could Euron's quest also represent a political choice - I mean, he could be seen as the "fascist" leader in this world, besides the charismatic revolutionaries (like Dani), the conservatives (like the noble houses), the reactionaries (like Illyrio) and the self-interested upstarters (like Littlefinger). Just some food for thoughts - needless to say, love your channel, I follow both the ASOIAF and the book club stuff.
