on shark's symbolism; sharks are usually kinslaying animals as several shark species hatch inside their mothers (they're are ovoviviparous) so when the first sibling hatches it proceeds to eat their brothers inside their mothers uteri before being born.

As far as I understood, the Ironborn didn't kill any Redwynes, Hightowers or Tyrells. The people from the Isle of Pigs were just threathening the Ironborn on the basis of them being vassals of aforementioned houses- They are vassals of the Arbour and they are vassals to Highgarden. I am not sure why the Hightowers are mentioned though.
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin8 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, it could certainly be that. I assumed it was the identity of the dead, but you're right it could be the content of the threat.
@fleet39958 жыл бұрын
I agree, I don't believe any of the dead are actually members of any of the houses either
@christianancrath27468 жыл бұрын
Ognjen Garić I just made a similar post. That was how I interpreted it as well. They are vassals of the Reach, and so they named the three richest/most powerful houses of the Reach, that's why I think the Hightower's are included.

19:20 I don’t think George meant that there was a dead Tyrell, Redwyne, and Hightower. What it likely meant was that the men on Pig Isle were threatening the Ironborn with the wrath of these three houses, thus these names were the threats they were “oinking”

About the fighting dwarfs: Danny saw some dwarfs in her House of the undying visions, raping a woman who was resembling Westeros. Maybe the dwarfs are meant to be not the small folks but the great houses fighting each other while Euron takes the throne. And looking like Cthulu? The description had more of a Davy Jones look from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. And who is that shadow lady beside him? Quaith?

I thought "Redweyn, oink. Hightower, oink. Tyrell, oink oink oink." simply was a list of Houses the Lord of the Isle of Pigs thought would avenge his death if the ironborn killed him. I imagine him saying something along the lines of :"If you dare to kill me the redweynes, hightowers and Tyrells will come down upon you with fire and furry." and the ironborn simply mock his threat.

It's not necessarily true that Euron is picking up telepathic messages from Aeron. It is an Aeron POV, after all. It could be that Euron is actually saying something different, but Aeron's mind paraphrases everything it hears into Aeron-speak, so what we get as readers is not Euron's direct speech, but what Aeron hears (or think he hears) of Euron's speech.

@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin8 жыл бұрын
Good point.
@ironman443208 жыл бұрын
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Shade of the Evening is also known as the Wine of Warlocks. It is a thick dark blue beverage made from the inky blue leaves of the black-barked trees that grow outside the House of the Undying. It is drunk by those who enter the House of the Undying, so that they may "hear and see the truths" that will be laid before them. It does not turn lips blue with just one dose, this only occurs if it consumed regularly. It smells like rotten flesh, has an oily and thick texture similar to honey, and tastes like all the tastes a person has ever tasted, and some that a person hasn't. It isn't clear if drinking shade of the evening, on its own, grants magical abilities, given that the Warlocks were drinking it in the century and a half since the dragons died out but their powers still diminished. As the warlock Pyat Pree explained, the warlocks believe that there is a link between dragons and the presence of magic in the world, and thus the rebirth of dragons has caused their magical powers to return. Thus like other forms of magic, whatever effects may be granted by shade of the evening depend on the existence of live dragons in the world. Euron Greyjoy picked up the habit of drinking Shade of the Evening during his long voyages in the east, after raiding around Qarth.gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Shade_of_the_evening

I've loved this chapter since it came out but when you highlighted how much more severe Damphair's shade of the evening-fueled premonition was compared to other premonitions we've seen from other characters, it really dawned on me the significance of this chapter in relationship to all the other prophecy related themes in the book. This is definitely a major sequence from the overall story and I'm amazed George decided to release it. Thanks again as always for your fantastic in-depth reviews.

I'm loving the "talking with your mind" angle you're working with in these recent videos, I'd love to see a follow-up series about to what extent varying degrees of telepathy comprise the religions and their proclaimed powers in aSoIaF. I personally enjoy the idea that the aSoIaF planet is in the proximity of a volcryn or proxy volcryn, and that powerful, shared belief is manifesting as gods/godly actions; with the more adherents to one idea/god, the more powerful the results. The red priests, for example, having no real power of prophecy, but actually causing events to occur via macro-telepathy through their volcryn-enhanced mass belief. i.e Moqorro's storm, the immolation of Orell, the resurrection of Beric Dondarrion

The only ASOIAF characters compared to amethyst are Dani and the Amethyst Empress from the Great Empire of the Dawn before the Long Night. She was betrayed by her jealous younger brother who cast her down during the Blood Betrayal and became the Bloodstone Emperor. He worshiped a black stone that fell from the sky and brought about the Long Night. Euron seems to be filling the place of the Bloodstone Emperor, if he steals Dani's dragons that could be a new Blood Betrayal, and if he has something bigger planned than this upcoming battle, he could bring about the new Long Night. Westerosi culture never gives a Why to the Long Night, maybe they will know why this time.
@helenakhan17968 жыл бұрын
dear Preston! couldn't you do this kind of series for any ASOIAF chapter you deem fit? maybe with an even more "bigger picture"-perspective than this "prepping for TWOW"? your line-by-line-analysis is so insightful! and since I started rereading the series, I can vouch for how your videos really enrich my reading experience! Big THANKS for that... ach, sometimes I wish there was a special e-book-edition of ASOIAF with you and people like Radio Westeros, Westeros History, LmL, Brynden BFish and Alt Shift X contributing commentary on stuff like in-world-history/lore, mythical astronomy, the bigger picture, tinfoil, real world parallels, r+l versus n+a, and so on. that would be a blast!

Does anyone know why the Ilse of Pigs has its name? Is this a reference to the bay of pigs which was the location of a failed invasion? On an other note the Isle of Cedars had pigs that did not fear men and could be easily taken and possibily used to bait/nettle a dragon. Is the Isle of Pigs an Island full of people that lost the fear for the Ironborn and could therefore be easily taken. Are these people of the isle of Pigs also bait?

This is one of the best channels out there! I'm so excited Alayne 1 part 6 just dropped :) my question is... Can we please look at how Aeron's imprisonment mirrors Theons? Or maybe you looked into this and there weren't many? I like how you made it clear about the darkness, stillness, and sightless, then the psychotropics. Victarion's ships fit to meet a king's fleet in battle were not lost to a storm, they turned back to attack the east coast of Westeros, which we already have indications of in Arianne's chapters. Euron is telegraphing an attack on the west coast as a diversion, he will end up on the east coast to take out Storm's End, as he is "the first storm and the last", and because we have been told through Arianne's chapters that taking Storm's End basically means you have the most power. We saw in a Victarion chapter that sacrifices gave him a speed boost. He'll probably summon some kraken(s) or whatever with the sacrifice, and leave it all to attack Oldtown, for the Mad Maid to be blamed for or for her to screw up trying to fight back with magic, while he speeds his way to the east coast thanks to the actual sacrifice. Euron will have even the sphinxes, the maesters, bow to him, because he will take own the dragon welp and be the only one who can protect Westeros from the dragon queen and her grumpkin army.

Love this series! But on the section about the Tyrell, The Hightower and the Redwyne I believe the lords and soldiers on The shield islands were threatening Euron and the Iron Born with the retribution these houses(The strongest and most fearsome high lords in the reach) not that any Tyrell's, Redwynes or Hightower's died in the attack, although I'm probably wrong about most of this 😉 If you are open to some suggestions I would be SUPER down for an in-depth look into the houses of The Reach and the Vale, maybe the Florents and the Royces,!!! Or what are the Hightower's up to and what does the magic studying daughter have to do with it all, !?
@timflowing8 жыл бұрын
I think with the Isle of Pigs, when the Oarsman said that they dared oink at them, he meant that they we're "oinking" about the Redwynes, Hightowers and Tyrells, that they had their protection. Which didn't help them, and I think that's the point Oar is making.

a few interesting thoughts. Did victarion ever openly tell euron, or Aeron that all his gifts are poison because he references that motto in relation to the shield islands. and this could lead someone to believe he is in victarions head as well which would make sense thematically in he uses his molestation to gain power of aeron and maybe trued to bang victarions wife just to try and hold power over victarion

I feel like the deep ones(drowned god) are closely associated with the black stones and are responsible for separating all the great powers of the world. Their are three uncharted areas in the story with three impassable barriers that have black stone icons or ruins nearby. Wall in the north has the Seastone chair in its vicinity, the five forts of Yi Ti are made of the black stone, and Yeen stands far to the south just before the green hell and its made of the black stone. Maybe the drowned gods role is that of mediator, i don't think the children of the forest destroyed the arm of dorn but the drowned god did they just asked it to. it all seems like a power struggle between four groups, not two. They being the great other and the white walkers, the red god and dragons, the children and weirwoods, and the drowned god and deep ones. Euron might be prepping to make the damphair legitimatley communicate with them. What do you think?

When I read this chapter I had a different interpretation of Torwold Browntooths response to Areon about "Who are these dead?" When Torwold said "They dared oink threats at us. Redwyne, oink...etc" I assumed whoever these dead were, they were making threats about how the Redwyne's, Hightower's, and Tyrell's would take revenge on the Ironborn. Not that there was a Redwyne, Hightower, and a Tyrell among the dead.

I thought that the 'shadow in woman's form' might be an Other - rather like the Night King's queen - remembering that Euron mentions wanting to 'make an heir worthy of him' (if we assume the 'him' to refer to the 'other'). Not necessarily as the woman who carries this heir, but perhaps a just symbolising his association with the 'other'? I can't really conflate pale white fire with Dany and if Cersei were to be associated with fire, one would assume it would be green fire. Just a (probably erroneous) thought.

I feel like Aeron describing the warlock's moving as praying silently suggests that within the framework of this narrative the characters regard prayer as verbal by default - at least in terms of the prayers discussed by aeron and euron. Don't get me wrong, i love your analysis. I believe you are onto something. I just don't subscribe to the idea prayer is necessarily consistently analogous to silent/mental communication.

There is something I couldn't understand: At around 11:00 min when the mute comes for Aeron - who speaks with a half-familiar voice? and who answers?!! Aren't they all mute?? Does Aeron hear the mutes communicating telepathically or are those some other people? I prefer the first option : )) Preston, thank you for the great work, I totally adore you : ))
@emersonjr.22192 жыл бұрын
11:07 definitely is Aeron hearing the crew network. Something has changed. But why though? What use will Aeron serve Euron? It's not just by the experimentation of opening someone to telepathy, cause he has already done it lots of times with his crew. Which, btw, are not only in it out of fear, they must believe in Euron as somewhat of leader capable of incredible things

Maybe I'm wrong, but the wife in Aeron's second vision invokes the Night's King's mate to me. After all the last time dwarves were used in visions they were representing king's fighting between themselves, wouldn't it be more fitting if Euron and Craster's "cold gods" sat above, mocking the struggles of men, who do not know the danger that approaches?

Hey PJ, any thoughts about the "familiar voice" saying "you know how he gets" ? Non-mute officers on the silence? A character that's not part of the crew, maybe someone mentioned at the feast? If it's a crewman, then the mutes are communicating telepathically amongst themselves, which would explain how the crew of the silence can actually be effective, and why they're mutes. Is the Damphair picking up some private telepathic conversation? Is he not strong enough to hear every one yet? Could that help him in anyway? Or is it just some random non-Silence lad?

OT question... how is it that we don't know what lies beyond the sunset sea? I mean, the Iron Islands lie on the eastern edge of the sea and the Ironborn seem to live a large portion of their life at sea. I know they are mainly raiders, but I'm surprised they have not ventured west. In over 100+ years of Targaryens having dragons no one flew over that area of the world to map it? I get the feeling that GRRM doesn't want us to know what's there yet, or how close Essos is to the western end of Westeros, but he just never gave us a good reason why there is no known knowledge on that area of the world. Is there anything in the overall series that I'm missing? Just curious.

There is a theory out there that the Land of Always Winter is somehow connected to Asshai. I think it's that AltShiftX guy.

awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Brandon_Stark_(Shipwright) awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Sunset_Sea#Quotes Definitely something there. One of the many questions in danger of being left unanswered by the end of aSoIaF and GoT. Will we only get someone (Arya?) setting sail in this direction in the epilogue of the saga?

soo... I did not take the quote 18:50 when Aeron asked who the dead are to mean that those men were the names of the men hung in the rafters. The names were the threats, the powerful families who would punish the raiders...

Just want to let you know I listened to this on the way home from work, I stopped the meeting I was in and cancelled a client dinner just so I could listen today.

Euron said it wasn't him, but his hand that killed Balon Greyjoy. Could he have meant Left Hand Lucas Codd? Not only does he have this in his name, but he is in the place of honor at King Euron's feast, as a king's hand would be, or the kings Left Hand man.
