Prequel Elements "Inherently less useful" to FX's Alien series!

While on the promotional tour for Fargo Season 5, Writer/Director Noah Hawley recently spoke with KCRW’s ‘The Business,’ about his upcoming FX Produced Alien series. NPR critic and self described sci-fi nerd Eric Deggans asked Hawley about the show.

I think a big issue with Ridley Scott's sequels was he was much more interested in the AI movie and not the xenomorph movie elements, it really feels like he wanted to make a straight up AI movie, he pitched it they didn't bite so he reworked it to set it into the Alien universe and they greenlit that..

I agree and this is the main issue with Ridley. I never liked his idea of moving away from the actual Xenos and going more into AI, Not in ALIEN that's just too off the mark. I think he just didn't have any new ideas and original ways to approach the Xenomorph in a refreshing way. this is why he absolutely should brought Blomkamp onboard and allowed him to do his planned "Alien 5". that way if the two had collaborated and shared thier ideas, we could have got Ridley completing his prequels consistently connecting right up to his original first movie. While Blomkamp would take it far forward into the future.

Yes and if I remember correctly, prior to the release of Prometheus it was being described as more of a straight forward prequel to Alien. Then it gradually was described as more of an “Alien adjacent” film. Despite some promising concepts, that movie was incoherent right from the start.

@@squarewave808 Yeh the marketing of Prometheus was all over the place, the trailers were cut to make it look like straight up horror, which just confused fans; and Ridley's words describing the movie in the run up to it's release really did not help. He should have just been straight and told everyone it's a frickin, goddamn distant prequel.

Androids are a staple of the franchise … but not the focus , usually set to a sub plot or a guessing game , are they an Ash or are they a Bishop Ridley’s focus seemed to be more fixated on the conversation of Roy Batty and Tyrell in Bladerunner “ not an easy thing to meet your maker “ “ I want more life father/fucker “ Look at Raised by Wolves ( a show that I personally fucking loved ) but again it had the Prometheus/covenant idea for the androids , which I was all for BECAUSE it wasn’t Alien

Regarding the alien’s origin, did we even need to know where it came from or how? I still prefer to think of it as a deep mystery. Yes it was always suggested as an engineered bio weapon, but why demystify it? And the depiction of Engineers in Prometheus never matched up with the creature we saw in the derelict in Alien. I think some writers have lost the understanding that less is more.

I am happy with them moving away from David being the creator of the Xenomorph I do like some aspects of the prequels I like the characters more in Covenant I actually don’t mind the advance technology

Whatever the intention, it can be interpreted that David was recreating, or putting his own spin, on the organism, it's origin can still be something much more ancient. The forthcoming series and movie doesn't have to acknowledge or contradict what happened in Prometheos or Covenant and they can both co-exist happily side by side.

I absolutely agree with this, i don't want them to start like "retconning" Ridley's prequel films, then if Noah Hawley's Alien series dosen't strike a chord with Fan, something else is made to retcon that, and over and over, where we end up with something like the terminator franchise, where the next new thing just keeps overwriting the previous iteration. And that is how i have Always seen David, he's basically the *John Hammond* of the ALIEN franchise now.

I’m not really opposed to this. My personal canon has only ever been the first two films anyway. I never really liked the whole “black goo” concept really. I always preferred to think that the facehuggers implanted actual embryos in the hosts, rather than some sort of carcinogen. I guess we’ll see how this goes. I have little faith in how studios treat beloved franchises (Star Wars anyone?) so I can only be pleasantly surprised in any case.

One BIG creative idea source a lot of the films have desisted from for some strange reason is H.R. Giger's 'Necronomicon'. The last great filmic Alien 'cousin' apart from the Neomorph was the crawling creature in Poltergeist 2 which Giger designed. No more stupid chicken/dinosaur raptor Alien creatures, MORE Atomkinder and The Tenant creatures. Forerunners to the Beast. And absolutely NO MARINES!! Please, somebody GET CREATIVE and IMAGINATIVE!! Im so looking forward to Romulus and Hawley's series hopefully taking a real leftfield approach incorporating 'The Company' and back to intensely dark corporate evil shenanigans. Very much like what we have today 😏 I'm newly subbed to this channel and enjoying shows, thanks 👍👍

Well this is a shame, i do think Hawley seems to have missunderstood, and isn't seeing it in other ways. For me personally, i just always viewed it as the "Black Goo" Vases, in Prometheus and the Deacon AND David's particular "Xenomorph" he created in Covenant; those are just the "John Hammond's Dinosaurs" from the JP movies. the o.g. *Xenomorph* the "Big Chap" from Ridley's 1979 ALIEN Masterpiece, was ALWAYS there on LV-426! those original Xeno eggs were still there underground, and the "Engineers" just basically replicated a more viral method of the Xenomorphic lifeform. the vials in one of those Urns, that David is inspecting and turns upside down, that contains the very DNA of the Xenomorphic lifeform. Well, atleast that's just how i always viewed it. Some, or many fans may be breathing a sigh of relief right now, but don't forget Noah Hawley's Alien FX series is set On Earth!! So if he's not going to connect to Ridley's prequels; he's still got to do alot of mental gymnastics, to consistently explain exactly HOW some Xeno eggs find their way to Earth, especially IF this series is going to be set BEFORE the original ALIEN Film. Sorry, i guess i'm just the minority here but i really don't see how "Prometheus" "rattles the lore". the original "Derelict ship" is still out there, the planetoid the Prometheus crew land on is even called LV-223!! So the original Xenomorph eggs are still there on that ship. Erm, sorry - "Did IQs just drop while i was away?"

​@@SpecialOrder935 I disagree, Prometheus shows us that the black goo does a number of different things, creating mutated "weird zombies" is just one of those things when Fifield gets a face full of goo. But the black goo also acts like a mutagen, it basically regenerates the cells with Shaw's entire reproductive system, because before she had revealed she could not have children. It heavily and aggressively evolves DNA, like what we saw happening to that Engineer head until that evolutionary accelerated process progress way too fast and it combusted. It only demystifies the original Xenomorph creature to you because you're not able to use your imagination and think hard enough into this lore that Ridley has created around the Xenomorph. You're not able to distinguish the two; and i mean that as no insult, but i do see this same kind of argument from many fans, who just don't want to "think" to much into this and see the other angles. If you even have a Xeno Mural that is shown in the movie, ofwhich atleast David and Holloway saw, showing the lifecycle of the Xenomorph. that's literally stating this is a pre-existing creature, a progenitor to the one David Replicated in Covenant. But i will admit Ridley Scott did himself no favors by trying to heavily hint that David was the sole "Creator" of the Xenomorphs. He even leaves having hijacked the Covenant Vessel and was on his way to "Origae-6"; so no "Derelict Ship" around at all by the end of Alien Covenant and that's because the derelict ship was always out there still on LV-426. Lastly don't get mixed up Engineers did Not Create Xenos, because the Mural specifically depicts that lifeform already in existence. But anyway regards Noah Hawley's FX alien series, i swear if he just makes it where some ancient tomb or cave is discovered with Facehugger eggs buried there i will just switch off and not watch the series. the Xenos should come from fa out in space.

I had zero hope that this series would be anything but garbage... ... but knowing Hawley will be rejecting the worst world building the franchise has seen... gives me hope... ... not a lot of hope... but hope... Also, the keyboards seen in Aliens and Alien aren't weird, Hawley just isn't old enough to have ever seen ones that looked like that. Not sure that makes him the best choice for being a showrunner. But he probably couldn't do any worse than a stereotypical, narcissistic, whiny boomer like Ridley Scott.
