Watching this 14 years later, I think that the people in this room severely underestimated the amount of deficit spending that this bill would cost and subsequent programs would cost in the next 8 years. Something had to be done about the recession, no doubt, and I applaud Obama for that, but the deficit would later balloon upwards of 15 trillion in the next 8 years, something that I think working class Americans and their families will be struggling with for probably the next 50 years.

The president at the time of the crash and the first years of the depression was Hoover (Republicn) and he refused to put into play the idea of government injection of activity to keep the economy moving. Keynes' thinking only came in with FDR, in 1933. And, I hope you are getting some relief from being laid off. Take care of yourself.
