I think my 5 year old would of loved this when he was a little younger, I can't believe how smart 5 year olds are these days, my 5 year old can count to 1000, he is so good at counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, etc he is really good at addition/subtraction even times tables, I am so impressed with how well he learns maths, both my oldest (10) and my middle son (5) are really good at maths.

Yes! I've seen a lot of teaching littles to count through song and simple memory work, but I loved how this focuses on starting with small numbers but having the chance to understand the concept of counting really, really well. Even in the first chapter, some of those activities are surprisingly deep concepts.

I love learning through play, so this sounds like a great preschool curriculum to set the child up for kindergarten. We use Math U See because of the concept of being able to visualize and feel math.

I can’t remember teaching a math curriculum when my kids where at pre school but I taught thru play. I taught science thru play as well. My daughter could count to 20 as she loved playing on the stairs so I thought her to count the stairs. I started teaching counting from 2 but did it slowly thru play and conversations. When my kids ate oranges I got them to count the segments.

Just wanted to add that you can follow this with Kate Snow's Math with Confidence. Many misuse it because they think you are to hand the kids the workbook pages and you are done. Consider the workbook pages more of an assessment at the end of the lesson. The meat of the lesson is what you are to do with your child prior to completing the workbook pages!
@SevenInAll

Yes! I'm about halfway through Kindergarten Math with Confidence with my oldest right now, and am continuing to be very impressed by the depth of number sense and mathematical reasoning skills being taught. The description of the workbook pages as an assessment at the end of the lesson is spot on!

This is a really good resource tool for preschoolers as long as it is age appropriate for your child, for my middle son it would of been perfect but for my older son it would be too difficult for him as in preschool he needed speech therapy and would of put too much stress for him. Once he was in kindergarten (the year before grade one not sure what you call it there) he didn't need speech therapy anymore. I have learnt with all 3 of my child they are all different and I shouldn't compare them to one another and let them learn at their own pace.
@SevenInAll

Yes! Each kid has his own pace, and some skills will come more easily or more slowly than others. It's so important to know your own child and what they thrive in!

I was going to jump to math u see primer thinking my son that just turned “knows” things but I really want to go back and reinforce this and his little sister who is 2 adores numbers and begs for math everyday so I want to sit and really absorb this .. I just had a meeting with myself and realized I’m rushing ! I don’t want my kids to resent learning and me … learning is not school learning is a part of life .. I’ve changed my pace to learning everyday instead of trying to hit some landmarks .. I think sometimes as homeschoolers we may feel that if our child is not above average than then we’re falling behind and it comes with the feeling of worry that we’re failing them because it’s not traditional school … I’m rambling but I made the mistake of introducing so many things to my little little ones just because I see videos of other home schoolers saying their 3 year old can read or do addition .. the past month I’ve been watching a lot of videos including yours and really slowing down and educating myself and I feel like the Lord revealed to me that I need to check my motives .. anyway I love your channel and how you really break things down .. it’s been a joy for me
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 2 жыл бұрын
I think one of your really key statements here was the change to "learning everyday" vs. hitting a certain landmark by a certain time. That is so more important! A little bit of progress every day--in learning, in relationships, in life and relationship skills--is so precious and valuable--landmarks don't always happen at our predetermined times, but if we're walking along the journey, we will reach those landmarks. And the reality is that it's impossible that ALL of our children are above average in everything (that would be a faulty definition of average, yes?). I have a 4 year old who's doing addition...but he isn't reading, and he isn't ready to read. And that's perfectly fine by me! There is SO much richness for preschoolers to learn, and I think a lot what kids can learn at this age is a lot more important than just 123s and ABCs. I found Preschool Math at Home to be a great book with a lot of depth--my son is now about 10 weeks into Math U See Primer and has gobbled it up. I'm so glad that my channel has been helpful--my goal is always to encourage parents that yes, we can pursue learning and a love of learning with our kids...and it CAN be a joyful experience, not a stressful one.

I’ve seen this book before and wasn’t so sure it was necessary BUT after your flip through, I think I might purchase this to do especially with my son with special needs. I think this could really help him with basic math concepts before attempting a formal math curriculum with him.
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 2 жыл бұрын
I also wasn't sure it would be "necessary"...but I was impressed with how in-depth the concept of counting is taken--quite a few of these activities are challenging for little ones just beginning to wrap their minds around numbers. Counting jumps or claps or matching the same number of counters to claps was been what we've been working on the past week--that's a challenge! It's definitely pursuing a deep understanding of numbers.

@@SevenInAll I’m thinking I’m going to get this book to do with my boys! I think it will be so good for them. One question though. Does it require a lot of teaching materials before implementing the lessons? I’m not good with that 🤪.
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 2 жыл бұрын
@@faithfullyinfertile I wouldn't say that it requires prep or lots of materials...I'm pretty much a no-prep person and just use whatever. We've only done the first chapter and I've basically used whatever was in reach at the time as a prop or something to count with...toy cars, stuffed animals, legos. There was an activity about feeding a certain number of food items, i.e. "So-and-so wants three crackers" and we just played it with having him serve out snacks to baby brother or feed small animal toys to his big stuffed crocodile. He really liked the carnivorous crocodile version. lol!

My little one refuses to accept the idea that a hand with no fingers held up is called zero... he says there's still 5, and folding them into a ball doesn't change that there is 5 🤦‍♀️
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 11 ай бұрын
hahaha! It can be tough to work on these strongly-held little ideas! I'd maybe chat about how yes, the fingers still exist, but holding UP fingers is a gesture used all around the world to represent quantities. (Granted, different cultures tend to start differently, use different fingers, etc...but I'd focus more on it being a method of visually communicating numbers from one person to another vs. the actual number of fingers in existence). Love these little minds and how they reason!

@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll Жыл бұрын
It's not scheduled out week-by-week. The activity ideas are designed to be completed in order, and the author suggests mastering one activity before moving on to the next...so how long that takes is going to depend on the individual child. Hope that's helpful!
