I saw him around that time in Philly in a tiny venue called The Trauma. I was young and stupid and didn't think anything of the numerous bands I saw in that wonderful place. It was just a place to go each week for great music. Velvet Underground, Canned Heat, John Hammond and probably many other legends that I just can't remember. The house band, "Mandrake Memorial" was there every week and me and my buds thought they were the equals of the touring bands. It's weird; I still feel young but damn, that was a long time ago.

@@bill9989 Yeah, I know what you mean. you're living , not thinking of absorbing it. I was 18 in 1967, graduated high school and traveled for nearly. 2 years. I saw Zeppelin in 1969 in Toronto at a place called The Rockpile,(capacity 1600 seats) for 17 bucks.I just wanted to see a many different bands/musicians as I could.I knew a lot of the promoters, so I was backstage many times. When Alvin Lee(10 years After, but you knew that) walked off stage after performance he came up to me and said,"Who cuts your hair." I told him,"Me." Stay safe.

@@ericblair54 We're the same age. The tiny Trauma was overtaken by a larger venue, The Electric Factory, just a city block away. I saw many acts there (I think Cream, but I'm not sure). Iron Butterfly definitely and I'm sure Deep Purple. I was lucky enough to see Hendrix and had very close seats (different venue) and I saw The Doors twice. Once Morrison was actually lucid. It's shocking how long ago that was. Even more shocking is I still have my health.

I put Lou in the same vein as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. To me they are more like poets and they often recited or read out their lyrics as much as they sang them. There was a spoken cadence to their vocals with unique inflections. Lou had a harder grittier edge to his songs that was underpinned by an amazing rhythmic sensibility. And of course Fil wonderfully captures that when he plays the guitar parts (as he always does) but then Fil is “accomplished”.

Dylan can actually sing. May sound like 💩 at times, but hardly ever off key; same with Young. Reed was just terrible as a singer and the music and writing were average. Amazing that he ever made it as a musician. The fact that other musicians talk about him like he was a god, is beyond me.

@@johnfazzari6208🤣, I'm willing to bet on it that Fil thinks exactly the same about Reed, but somehow it's hands off when it comes to Lou Reed. I hate those perfect voices; for me it's all about songwriting ability and feeling, but Reed was literally tone deaf. Then people want to put him in the same sentence as Dylan. Cohen maybe, but I would argue that even Cohen sounded like Pavarotti compared to Reed. Watch some live Reed if you think I'm exaggerating.

This is yet another fabulous, essential video. Fil for UK Minister of Popular Music! Essential viewing for anyone trying to play or understand Rock ‘n’ Roll. Spot-on-perfect analysis of what really matters, and by a master musician, too (they can get confused by their own mastery and craft). I think it’s worth noting that Lou is eschewing the “gallop” live for the most part, especially when singing. But you’re right that it’s essential to the groove on the studio version. Two different contexts, and Lou-as you point out-was a master of that distinction, and how to apply it. Finally: When AI figures out how to do this, I mean really do THIS. . . turn out the lights.

Yea, almost any vocal by Lou Reed could be considered the antithesis of auto tune. I agree with TorToroPorco below linking Lou as an artist to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, who also absolutely didn't need auto tune. I would add Tom Waits to that list. Another great song writer with a unique; to say the least, voice and sometimes quirky style. Great breakdown as always Fil. For a long time I noticed that pushing the tempo can be a really great thing with some songs and styles of music; or at least be pleasurable in a different way, but disastrous in other instances. Recently, I've been watching videos of rock n roll precursor Louis Jordan; from the 1940's to a 1974 live performance, and was sad to see how his live TV performances in the 1950's and 60's had the life; I might even say the soul, sucked out of those songs because the tempos were pushed so hard, probably for TV time reasons. I guess I'm suggesting you should do a video looking at Louis Jordan, seeing as he filmed his own performances for his own movie company back in the 1940's and early 50's. Plus, I've read that Chuck Berry, James Brown and B.B. King all cited Louis Jordan as having influenced them in different ways.

Lou Reed could at times seem a bit sloppy with his singing, but he had a strong, built-in rock'n'roll instinct and wrote a bunch of amazing songs in the course of his career. He was never formulaic, to be sure. I first heard this song on the live "Rock and Roll Animal" album, where he was backed by a dream team, with Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter on guitars, Prakash John on bass, Josef Chirowsky on keys and Whitney Glen on drums. This live video reminds me a lot of that album's version, also very different from the original VU recording.

Nice work Fil. Especially off the back of the 'auto tune' vids. Remember the Barbarella Band with the oral exciter? In retrospect it sounds like someone took some lawn shears to the tape and literally sliced of the vocal. Lou wrote some great songs for true singers, eg Perfect Day or Femme Fatale (or the one Mo Tucker sang, "If you close the door......", someone should cover that). but he also wrote a lot of songs that can't truly be sung. The lyric itself becomes almost a seperate melody, rather than the voice singing that lyric. The phrasing and intonation is far more important than any particualr note. Which leads me on to my request. Could you do a video on the difference between a 'singer' and a 'vocalist'. So the way I see this is along the lines of: My fav vocalists, Otis Redding, fav singer is Paul Robeson. Beyonce is a singer, Tina Turner is a vocalist. Jagger is a vocalist, Tom Jones is a singer. Neither is superior to the other, but I do belive there is a difference. Redding vs Sam Cooke might be a good place to start. And if you want some perspective on how far behind the pack I am kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpOqoGprj7-gm5Y And no singer/vocalist should ever forget, reverb is your friend.

Unfortunately, all of the videos shot at the Capitol Theatre at that time completely blow off Robert Quine. That was after they were falling out (Lou nearly mixed Quine out of the 1983 Legendary Hearts album). It's hard not to believe that Lou instructed the director to do that on purpose. The camera always seems to cut away whenever Quine is soloing. There's another song (can't remember which one) where the camera stays on the keyboard player for the entire guitar solo. Quine was so stunning to see play, so it's a shame. I love Lou, don't get me wrong, but it's still sad what happened between him and Quine, and even sadder what happened to Quine later.

I have been a big fan of Lou’s since high school in the ‘70s. There is a video of one of my favorite guitarists, Mick Ronson, talking about working on Transformer and trying to tune Lou’s guitar when he wasn’t looking, lol. As far as Lou’s voice, he only attempted to sing an actual melody on a few Velvets songs (Pale Blue Eyes, and rarity I’m Sticking with You, where he harmonizes with Maureen Tucker, come to mind ). I would be curious to hear what his vocals on this version would sound like if they *were* put through autotune. I wonder if the software would be able to pick up the tune from his intentionally monotone voice? (For the record, I can’t stand autotune and it’s always very obvious to me, having grown up with even studio performances that were never intended to be pitch perfect. I loved what Fil said on another vid about hearing the humanity in the vocal.)

For starters, that drummer could give you whiplash. Also, the guitar part you demonstrated brings to mind the opening of Gimme Shelter, when Uncle Keef drops from bright major down into ugly and scary. Also, find Lou Reed and David Bowie doing Dirty Boulevard. They hit the note perfectly without ever bothering to hit the note.

Lou always tells a great story. Who cares if it is in tune or not. It is always timely even if it isn’t necessarily in synch. It is always universal even if it is mostly urban and mostly New York. Thanks for sharing❤️

I don't mind at all that Fil explains (takes away the mystery) song writing and rock and roll in general. In a documentary type book I checked out of our library last year (something like "Rock in London") there was a quote from Lou Reed. Lou was searching for a hit (I know odd to think Lou Reed really cared about hits and making money, but he did) Lou stated the the beauty and value of a simple song (I concluded a simple riff) should not be dismissed. It is the simple songs that routinely turn into hits. These are the tunes of my life. Oh, another strumming word I can safely use when explaining what I am trying to do to my instructor "gallop". Thanks Fil.

My favorite post Velvets Lou is the band with Lou and Robert Quine on guitars. The 1984 "Live In Italy" is a great live album featuring this lineup. I think the particular show you are discussing (with Quine) is cluttered a bit due to the addition of a keyboardist, who crowdfs out Quine's amazing lead on the instrumental portion. But there are a number of great versions of this song both with the Velvets and solo!

I think the version on "An Evening With Lou Reed" showcases Quine better. For one thing, he's not hidden behind the backup singers, and he doesn't have to compete with the busy keys. It's just "The Blue Mask" band at The Bottom End, being amazing. Lou pull off some amazing solos, too!

My wife caused the death of Lou Reed. A few years back I played her Transformer for the first time. She really loved it and listened to it over and over and over (along with the first Velvet Underground album). She must have listened to them 30 or more times over a three day period and then it came on the news that he died. She wore him out.

As Lou is one of those favourites of mine whose entire discography I've spent decades trying to collect (I'm still looking), I feel that I should say something but, whichever way I look I draw a blank. So perhaps point form would be appropriate. Lou has quite a zoo with him on this tour, as opposed to the skin and bones of the VU days. I combed through KZbin looking for a particular version of a particular song that would have been interesting to hear next to this one that you analysed. It was "We're Gonna Have A Real Good Time Together," off of the double vinyl "VU Live '69" album. I have a copy along with the cd version but I couldn't find anything from that album on The Tube. Lou doesn't always talk through his lyrics, even though he wanted to be seen as a poet who happened to also play rock 'n' roll. The fragile tenderness of "Pale Blue Eyes" is a fine example of his touch for melody. "Sister Ray" is a full 180° turn in the opposite direction. "Cremation," off of the "Magic and Loss" album has some of his finest (that entire album does have…) lyric speaking (I should have written that in German). I guess I did have something to say. To be honest, I had much too much to say. I think your videos are always excellent so just consider that to be my opinion even if I don't say so explicitly. Be well and peace! 😎🎸✌️

I visited a Lou Reed concert in the mid-nineties where he played plenty of songs from his New York album. I was absolutely amazed by how the two guitars and the bass almost seemed to talk to each other. I‘d love to hear your thoughts on one of the songs from that album.
