Your assessment is spot on, but I would also like to add a point that makes her performance even more wonderful. She was singing in the capitol rotunda, so the sound is different from typical rooms. The marble walls cause sound to bounce and the rotunda causes even small noises on the other side of the room to be amplified. Add to this the number of bodies and the murmur of people around, then she begins on a good pitch and the people around you begin to join in. For those who have performed in an acapella choir, the tones of those singing around you impact your own pitch, even if just a little bit. She had to drown out the noise of all the sounds bouncing around, the hum of whispers, then the potentially out of tune audience members literally surrounding her mere feet (some even a foot) away. That is very hard to do, even for an experienced singer. She did an outstanding job!

My high school’s Symphonic Choir went to D.C. for a national choral competition, and toured around the city a few days while not getting ready for our performance. I am instrument player, not a vocalist. I had a band teacher in HS of all places that tried to explain to us that in a major scale, the intervals between some of the notes aren't meant to be exact. He would yell at us "Make this one a tad flat" For whatever reason the sharp intervals and flat intervals just sound better. You mention that long before we annotated music we had music. So true. Carrie is a brilliant performer who naturally understands where to place the notes in a major scale to make it sound awesome.
@EmmanuelGoldstein310 күн бұрын
I had a voice teacher tell me the same thing. I was at a lesson and I was matching the notes she was playing on the piano, and she'd say that it would sound better if certain ones were sung a little sharp. This is because the piano's in equal temperament, but with a melody what we're hearing are the intervals. So you want to make the actual third or fourth or whatever, rather than the tempered approximation. Yes, it will clash minutely with the accompaniment, but getting the melody right is more important than that. And actually, part of what a great singer (or violin player) has to do is select which version of each interval will sound best. (e.g. there are a variety of different ratios that are legitimately thirds. You might choose a narrow one or a wide one depending on the context). This is where a lot of expression comes from.
@menninkainen88309 күн бұрын
That's because your instrument is usually not actually tuned to the key you are playing. You can only tune to one key accurately, or as usual tune all the keys a little bit off and then compensate. But you cannot compensate on a keyboard, which actually makes them to be always out of natural tune and never sound pure. And when you autotune to this temperament of a piano, your singing will actually never be exactly in tune either. And further, playing high or low on purpose from the "correct" pitch creates emotional tension.

I'm glad you showcased this current performance. She took a lot of backlash for even accepting the opportunity to perform for the ceremony. She rose above the hate, as well as the technical failure, with her personal grace and sheer talent.

If she had wanted to "rise above the hate", she wouldn't have validated it by being there. One hopes the sound going out will be the last malfunction, but my hopes aren't high.

Totally agree. Politics - Corruption has divided America to a degree that is incomprehensible. Donald Trump is one of the luckiest men on Earth. He should fire everyone concerned with this massive failure. It should have just been Carrie, and a small chambre ensemble LIVE ! The fact that Carrie sang the melody,remembered the lyrics, and handled one of the most awkward situations with grace, and dignity says much. Donald you owe this woman a medal for the arts under fire. Ps. Thank your lucky stars it was not Taylor having to sing this song, that would have ruined a lot of careers.

If it wasn't an accident (seems odd that there wasn't any backup plan) it backfired spectacularly. America The Beautiful was the perfect song for this to happen with because it is one of your greatest patriotic songs and everyone can sing it unlike the Star Spangled Banner which is difficult for even the most accomplished singers.
