Ruthann, please don’t ever make your videos “professional”. One of the things I enjoy about your presentations are the authentic press. You live like I do, in an imperfect world. I love your kitchen, the angels, your family, the reality of everything, and the normal-ness of it all. Thank you for blessing me with your sweet corn day. I grew up in Ames, Iowa--one of the very best places to grow up and enjoy the town, university events, and farm life! The sweet corn is the best in the world--and everything else out of the garden and orchard, too! That thick, black soil/loam is the richest in the world--IMHO! The rite of passage was to be 14 yo--so you could be hired to work on crews to detassel field corn for farmers. This was over 50 years ago--of course, most detasseling is done mechanically now. Kids were picked up before light, and dropped off back in their neighborhood after sunset--and thought they were getting rich earning around $1.00 an hour! Most of my friends were earning money to pay for school clothes, college, help the family pay bills, or buy a used car.

You're right. I grew up on a subsistence type farm so plenty of work but I have such fond memories of sitting under the walnut tree which had wonderful thick foliage providing the best shade and unlike fruit trees which would drop fruit to attract yellow jackets, fallen walnuts didn't have the same effect. The oldest 2 boys and grandpa would pick baskets of corn and dump them under the tree and the rest of us kids and Mom would start shucking. Once they finished picking the would load up a bunch of the husks to give to the pigs which lived them. We always canned all of our vegetables because the very limited freezer space was for meat. Fond memories.

Thank you for showing your sweet corn day! It is just like the sweet corn days of my childhood except a lot of times it was just me and my mom. It is how I learned knife skills at an age that would frighten most modern parents. At one time I could cut off the corn just like you, though i have lost that speed. 😊 my grandma was SO PICKY...she made THREE passes over the corn, cutting it into tiny pieces and then scraping the cob with the back of her knife. Mom said," I dont have time for that." So mom made one cut and one scrape. I learned thst if timing was off and the corn was a little too full,an extra knife pass helped the end result. Per usual, I cried at at least one part of the video. This time it was the sounds of pulling off the stalk, then the family shucking. Thank you for your videos and there is nothing wrong with your camera angles. I love your kitchen just the way it is.

Beautiful sunrise view!!! I love it! I just harvested my sweet corn as well, storm had a few days ago blew a lot of it over. I have been busy finishing up with canning my blackberry jelly and making pepper jellies for the 1st time. My steam juicer for my black berries has been a Godsend! Thanks for sharing the memories, wish I was a neighbor so could learn, even at 52y old, more as I learn from doing than reading from a book. Your family is blessed having you helping carry on that knowledge! I didn't have that, my grandparents passed before I was grown and my mother had no interest in any of it.

As an Iowa farm girl such as yourself, I truly enjoy sitting with a big glass of sweet tea in the backyard under a shade tree husking corn. It’s almost therapeutic. Talking with family and friends, talking about the upcoming fall, just spending time together.

I so remember corn day at MawMaw’s house. My mom, aunt, and grandmother cut as us (grandkids) shucked it. They taught us to cut twice around and then scrape the cob with the back of the knife to get all of the starch. Of course we were processing “cream” corn which was savory dent corn. Thank you for the memories❤

Love this video, it really is a WONDER watching the way corn grows and how it is harvested! The children and animals look like a picture out of a storybook, magical. Blessings 🙏

Oh sweet mama, when I heard one of your boys say, “This is like my favorite day” my heart melted and I got a tear in my eye 🥰
