Goju Ryu Preservation is about finding the TRUE history and timeline of the art. There are many misconceptions and myths out there about the art and today we speak with guest Karateka and Goju Ryu Scholar, Johnpaul Williams, on his efforts to preserve the history of Goju Ryu and take it forward into the future.

Because of the combinations of Gojo and Shorin Ryu in Isshin Ryu I found them more accommodating to all age groups. Less energy spent or wasted.

Well, Tatsuo Shimabuku only brought Seiunchin, Sanchin and Seisan to Isshin-ryu, all of which he had somewhat simplified and modified. It is still a mystery as to why he borrowed more of Shorin-ryu than that of Goju. It is the Shorin Ryu that is more lithe and is well suited for smaller frame people, is quicker and is more linear. Isshin-ryu is not less energy, it is a harder style.

@@The-Travel-Man This seisan isn't even from Goju, it's from Shorin Ryu. He was primarily a student of Chotoku Kyan and learned Shorin Ryu from him. Later he learned a little Goju-Ryu from Miyagi and added sanchin and seiunchin to what he did.

Yes, Isshin-Ryu, PROPERLY done, is a flowing style that uses the original "combat" method of punching, that is, without Kime' but using ballistic strikes, I think it's referred to as "atifa". The trouble is, so many of the marines that brought it back didn't truly understand it, and, to be fair to them, it was still developing at that time, and this led to different "versions" and organizations. Some of the kata meanings seem wrong, and, frankly, the only kata that one needs from this style is the final one, Sunsu, created by Shimabuku to contain the "best" techniques, it contains the essence of the style and all the basic moves.

@@The-Travel-Man Actually, the Seisan of Isshin is from either Shorin or Tomari-Te, another style that influenced this style.

Just to clear things up a bit... Chojun Miyagi taught all over Japan, but mostly at his home, at local schools and the police academy. When Miyagi died at the age of 65 in 1953, he had not promoted a single black belt. Still, his students want on to spread Goju-Ryu to millions of people throughout the world.

I just bought John Paul Williams's book. I have been involved in teaching and training in Okinawan Goju-Ryu & Martial Arts for over 55 years. By far this is the best Goju-Ryu book on the market. Excellant content, well laid out, & great historical pictures & timelines. Well done John

Great video, as always! As as Goju-ryu practitioner I have a deep appreciation of new insights that are gleaned from others. In Goju-ryu we learn to literally grip the floor with our toes - look for that in a dojo that you consider training at.

That is awesome! It’s like the book series Choque. I think it’s important for martial artists to learn the real history of their art. It’s incredible enough without the myths.

can you talk about the White Crane being the inspiration and source for Goju ryu or maybe the entire Okinawa karate style that originates from kung fu in the next video
@The-Travel-Man
@The-Travel-Man 2 жыл бұрын
White Crane is not the only style that is rooted in modern day Karate. It is also Dragon, Monk Fist boxing, Mantis and other Southern Chinese styles. Look up info on Hakka people and their journey to the South China along with their martial arts they brought with them. White Crane is a best representation of Sanchin Kata - the most fundamental form in Goju-ryu karate.

Excellent interview of Sensei Johnpaul Williams and his in depth knowledge of Goju-Ryu Karate. I definitely agree with him that 14 year olds should not be holding black belts, especially those above first dan, let alone the first dan one since as he said they might know the aesthetics of the movements such as the basics, the katas and so forth, but are not capable of truly defending themselves at full capacity, against a fully grown, robust, muscular adult! As for the Mcdojo he mentioned, mixing Chinese Kung Fu, Korean Taekwondo and a thing here and there of Japanese or possibly Okinawan Karate, those charlatans should be closed down! He is absolutely right, prior to signing up to a martial arts school, investigate the teacher's credentials, their lineage and if they start mentioning contracts, then run out the door as quickly as possible. A bona-fide, reputable martial arts school would not be so underhanded, instead they will give you paying options, be it weekly, monthly, half yearly and so forth. I personally of my own free will pay my Shihan (master) for the entire year, as I find it easier that way, instead of having to be reminded, say every three months, or every six months, or have it withdrawn weekly from my bank account. Nevertheless this has been my own choice to pay yearly all at once for that year, instead of it being imposed upon me. I would definitely be interested in reading his Goju-Ryu Karate book volume 1, then subsequently the other three volumes, once they are fully printed and readily available. Last but not least I truly believe like Sensei Johnpaul Williams said, that those grading for any of the black belt levels, ought to present a written, academic paper, (essay/thesis) as he mentioned. Some Kyokushin Karate schools do it, along with a written, theoretical test, yet some no longer do it. Looking forward to your conclusion on the Goju-Ryu Karate series Sensei Dan, as always greetings from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺🇲🇽🥋🦘🐨Osu!

A lot of the stories out there about Goju are kinda mixed up. The main thing is you study/train the Kihon(basics) and Kata. Just keep training!!!!!
@mizukarate
@mizukarate 2 жыл бұрын
They way I look at It as long as you train Goju Kihon(basics) and Kata(especially Sanchin) you are Goju. You don't have to be a hardcore historian with all the family and dojo links. If you follow the training and life philosophy of Goju that is all that matters.

Hey Mr Dan. I was just having a couple ideas for videos you could do. I don't know how easy they would be to research and film but I thought I'd share my ideas. 1. Martial Arts Tattoos. 2. Martial Arts vacations. I can't tell you how often I've googled these thing with not much luck maybe the Art Of One Dojo community can help with these ideas.

Martial arts vacations have to be pretty much created personally. Find a seminar in a cool location and plan a vacay around it. I took a trip to Japan and went and trained at the jka headquarters during my stay and went to go see samurai stuff. Tattoos i feel should be earned, not like the bjj 4 stripe white belt with a G logo in the shape of a triangle. But i watch too many movies

Now I laugh. Sorry, but a lot of people do not have dojos very close, or that many to choose between. I have two karate dojos to chose between about the same distance thirty minutes, bus and walking, Shotokan and Kyukushin. In the next town (39km, away, add 35 min by train and whatever added time once there) there is also Shito Ryu. Closest Goju Ryu is more like 100 km away ... Other small towns perhaps have one dojo, so people train what is available or do not. But once I travelled 30 minutes extra to get to "my" Goju Ryu, instead of the one close by, (with the same head sensei), those wete the days ... So of course, find the one that feels right and competent, if it is possible.

Also, Gogen yamaguchi only trained with miyagi sensei for between 6 and 8 months. My teacher, master Peter Urban, founder of USA goju, told me this personally. Sensei miyagi did give yamaguchi sensei the task of spreading goju. Yamaguchi Sensei never got any rank from Sensei miyagi

@abcdef-kx2qt : Really? Maybe you should stay off the internet until you learn how to post up without insulting people. The attitude is unique nonetheless. Sensei Williams spent a lot of time doing research on the subject of Goju ryu and traveling back to Japan to study with Fujiwara Sensei and Tasaki Hanshi. I know that it’s a way that you can express yourself in writing but no matter if your a good or bad martial artist. Expressing yourself in the manner just lead to trouble sooner or later.
