Nixon was suffering from a severe bout of depression this night, which afflicted him from time to time. It would have taken an enormous amount of energy for him to have given this speech.
@wftjet6 жыл бұрын
C R Nixon was depressed because he had no Republican coattails. The nation split their tickets mercilessly in 1972, which Nixon took as a rebuke. The country rejected McGovern but did not embrace him.

What is truly interesting is Nixon was such an introvert yet he wanted to be loved
@CarlosBacardi5 жыл бұрын
Very calm, dignified, well delivered speech. Just a shame he didn’t live up to the lofty ideals he set for himself here. His insecurity was his downfall. He didn’t need to be insecure, he could have been brilliant. He could have been the best President ever if he’d believed in himself. And I say this as a U.K. socialist!

@williamgregory184811 ай бұрын
Literally throughout the 1972 campaign, Nixon had a large lead due to the economic recovery from the 1969-1970 recession and his portrayal of George McGovern as a foreign-policy lightweight and social radical ("amnesty, abortion, and acid"). McGovern was also hurt by his change of vice-presidential candidates in mid-campaign, raising questions about his judgement. Had he not been paranoid, he would’ve gone down as one of the greatest presidents this nation ever had.

as a democrat nixon was such an intriguing guy. very qualified statesman, very intelligent and competent. but at the same time, his cambodia/vietnam legacy is not good, the war on drugs was one of the worst things this country has ever seen. but he was surprisingly liberal on many other issues. epa, healthcare (to an extent), regulation, etc. maybe even a liberal conservative. if he didn't become so paranoid after 1960 and fuck shit up with watergate, he probably would be a consensus top-15 president

Watergate is overstated. Look at what the same critics in the media and in congress have all very willingly turned a blind eye too from the Kennedy White House, the Johnson White House, and the Clinton White House. Watergate pales in comparison if you look at the actual substance of it.

@@maldose1227 It's really not. Watergate decimated people's faith in government and trust in the presidency and the country never really recovered. In a lot of ways, it was part of a broader trend-- including Vietnam-- that decimated America's faith in itself. We're still living with the consequences of it. The original commenter is right-- without Watergate, Nixon would have been remembered as an accomplished (and very imperfect) leader. Rarely has a leader so completely detonated their legacy with one completely avoidable screw-up.

The best Republican President of the 20th Century in my humble personal opinion along with Coolidge and Eisenhower. This guy should have remained President until the end of his second term on January 20, 1977. Regardless of the left wing fake trash media demonizing of him from day one the disaster of Ohio State University and Watergate in my personal humble opinion doesn't diminish the inner character and great achievements of this man. Still the most underrated United States President in my personal opinion along with Jimmy Carter.
