In some nations, a leader is removed from office for jailing and executing his rivals, or becoming monstrously wealthy by cozying up to powerful interests, or ordering the militia to open fire on protesters, or overturning the legal system in order to cling to power decade after decade. Nixon left the White House for refusing to cooperate with Congress regarding an election scandal. That's it. No money in offshore accounts, no piles of corpses, no blood in the halls of Congress. He resigned for obstructing justice. Such a small thing. But, half a century ago, that's how seriously we took those small things.@@mikenixon2401 Have a safe and interesting weekend. 🥃🐧

He really had no other option, because the House Judiciary had already voted for three articles of impeachment, and the House was scheduled to vote on them. In the Senate, he almost certainly would have been removed from office had he not resigned. His last great service to our nation -- among many other achievements -- was his resignation from office and this supremely eloquent speech at the end of his service. I also believe that President Ford did exactly the right thing in pardoning Richard Nixon and sparing us from all the drama that could have otherwise ensured. Still, whatever his faults, Richard Nixon will go down in history as one of our very greatest presidents, and his family is justly proud of him.

I was born in 1975, but am a Kennedy assassination researcher and author. In doing that, I acquired an interest in Nixon as well, and have always admired him. I particularly respect his concession speech in 1960 ("I believe Mr. Kennedy is a good American, even though he believes I am not..."). I believe most of us here recognize the 1960 election was not exactly as on the level as one would hope due to some monkey business by the Kennedy camp. One must wonder what the world today might look like if '60 had gone differently, or even if just Watergate had not occurred. I don't believe Nixon's administration did anything that any number of others haven't done...he just got caught. I believe both Kennedy and Nixon were great men, but like all in men, great and otherwise, mistakes were made and vulnerabilities existed. John Lennon made a remark on the very day on which he died in an interview with RKO in which he observed that there's a mystique that surrounds Kennedy, but perhaps that is due to the fact that he died early and "didn't live long enough to let us all down." Nixon, I believe, did live that long, and then long enough to redeem himself as a respected elder statesman. I was a freshman in college when Nixon died, and I recall hearing the news quite distinctly. It's too bad more people think of the downfall rather than the true man.
