Aramys Hayes I’m NOT defending what Reagan said but I think he was referring to African socialist diplomats (wrong language though) . I understand that what he said was wrong but people backed then said stuff that was “normal” back then but now considered racist. What Reagan said was the “normal at the time”. Even Eisenhower said stuff that would be considered racist today. I don’t think Reagan hated African Americans. In the 1940s he gave speeches favoring civil rights and racial equality at a rally. Reagan’s father strongly opposed the klu klux klan not only because of his catholic heritage but due to the klan’s anti semitism and anti black racism. Overall I don’t think he hated African Americans. In fact I think his globalist VP HW did a lot of damage to black community.

Whether or not you think Reagan was a great president, I think a lot of us can agree that he was one of, if not the, most inspiring and well-intentioned man to step foot in the oval office. Excellent speech, and happy 92nd birthday to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Reagan hadn't wanted to sign MLK day into law because he incorrectly thought King was a Communist. He had to be cajoled into this by Congress.

How many racist things have you ever said "once"? Uh huh. Saying something at one time or another doesn't make a person anything; it's what a person's basic beliefs & values are that count. I believe Reagan, although not perfect, was a very decent & moral person, who believed in the good of people, but was realistic about how the world is.

Did Reagan ever admit he was wrong to support Barry Goldwater as his first move as a new republican? Because Goldwater's entire campaign was basically saying MLK was a socialist for demanding that the south be forced to let back people to vote........it would have been hard because his famous pro goldwater speech called "a time for choosing" was basically the launching pad for his entire fear mongering of socialism that allowed gave him the power to control America. Being anti MLK was key to Reagans entire reign.

You have no idea what your talking about. Goldwater voted in favor of the 1957 civil rights act, but voted against the 1964 one because it infringed on what he considered to be the rights of private businesses to do what they want on their property (including segregate) he was In complete favor of desegregation on all federal and state owned land and institutions, and he heavily promoted desegregation in his home state of Arizona. He never called mlk a socialist, in fact mlk ridiculed him for being too "sympathetic" toward white southerners, and endorsed LBJ despite the fact that LBJ voted against basically every civil rights bill except 1964, which, keep in mind, was drafted by Kennedy but he took all of the credit for it. It was a mere disagreement between MLK and Goldwater about segregation that lead MLK to endorse Johnson, because MLK was not as much of a big picture guy like Goldwater, and focused more on what he believed to be a direct effect of the repeal of the civil rights act which, in his mind, would create opportunities for mostly democratic racist white southerners to exploit the system and promote segregation to spread its influence. Goldwater went on to support full on desegregation, legalization of marijuana, and privatization of marriage to allow same sex marriage with out the force of the state. Goldwater was libertarian af (except for foreign policy and abortion). In the mean time, Reagan did support goldwater in 1964, but he also supported nixon who, while having problems with the drug and Vietnam war, was openly against segregation. Reagan was also against legalization of drugs unlike goldwater, and he was much more conservative on other social issues. When you call someone racist because of who they supported for president, you need to prove that not only is that president racist, but there are other instances of the man In question being racist, and none of those have been provided.
@lilpitt4860

Also I do think reagan was a hypocrite when he said we should never promote government policies that intentionally or unintentionally racist, because he promoted the war on drugs and that unintentionally targeted black people because it was suppose to get rid of poor people who did drugs off the streets and there are way more poor black people than poor white people so yeah, there's ONE thing. I still stand by my first argument though. Also plenty of moderate and southern Democrats supported the war on drugs too so it wasn't just him or nixon.

@@lilpitt4860 he voted for the 57 civil rights act because it didn't do anything, it didn't force the south to do anything; the idea that he wanted desegregation but that the "south should do it their own way", is a mentally insane take, just the idea that the south would do anything on their own; Its fair to say that the south wanting to do things on their own, and using the fear mongering of central government involvement and socialism(which was a strange form of nationalism) as rationalization for oppression is the most damaging force in american history,

Its a nice speech. And slavery 150 years ago and segregation 70 years ago in the South was wrong. I would only add that having lived all my life long after both as a 'white' person, I was never a slaveowner and my family immigrated here more than half a century after the Civil War. However I have certainly faced roadblocks and exclusion, being treated unfairly, being cheated, lied to, cliqued out from IN groups, passed up for government jobs I was clearly qualified for, underemployed and forced to take work beneath my dignity to pay the bills..... and alllll that stuff. I feel your pain, even if I don't have the skin to show it. The only difference is I'm not allowed to blame it on my race. So I get no sympathy I'm just supposed to give it. But, at least I'm used to it :/
