The Honorable Jose L. Linares became Chief Judge of the New Jersey Federal District Court on June 1, 2017. He is the first Hispanic in the history of the New Jersey Federal Court to serve as Chief District Court Judge, and the first Cuban-born to serve as Federal District Court Chief in the United States. Linares was nominated to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2002, and served from 2002 to 2019 on the U.S. District Court, before retiring from service.
The 1975 NJCU (then Jersey City State College) alumnus was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference offensive lineman for the Gothic Knight football team. At the university's 2018 Commencement ceremony, he received an honorary doctor of humane letters and addressed that year's graduating class.
