most important on Windows system is the OS optimisation : General optimisation Windows 10 PC 1. Set your computer's power for high performance If your computer is set to conserve energy, the CPU may not be running at full speed all of the time. This can have a detrimental effect on your computer's audio performance. To set your computer's power for high performance: - Go to: Control Panel>Power Options - Choose "High Performance" - Then click the "Change plan settings" button. Make sure both power options are set to "Never". 2. Disable system sounds System sounds can interrupt audio applications. Ensure that they are disabled by doing the following: - Go to control panel and select "Sound" - Go to the sounds tab - Under sounds scheme, select "No sounds" - Click "Apply" then, "OK" 3. Set processor scheduling to "Background services" This will improve the performance of your audio drivers on your computer. To do this: - In control panel select "system" - Go to "Advanced system settings" and then the "Advanced" tab - Click on "Settings.." under Performance to bring up the "Performance Options" window. - Go to the "Advanced" tab and set processor scheduling as "Background Services" - Click "Apply" then "OK" 4. Disable 'Windows Background Apps' Windows 10, by default, runs a number of Apps in the background, regardless of whether you are using them. Select 'Settings' from the Windows Start menu, select 'Privacy', then select 'Background Apps'. From here switch 'Off' the apps that you do not believe you are using, or that you do not wish to run in the background when you are not using the program. 5. Disable 'Windows updates from more than one place' Navigate to 'Settings' in the Windows Start Menu. Then select: Update & Security -> Advanced Options -> Choose how updates are delivered -> Turn the slider from 'ON' to 'OFF'. USB optimisation: If you're using a USB interface then we'd also recommend checking the following settings: 1) In the device manager (Right-click the Windows icon > Device Manager), in the Universal Serial Bus controllers section, right click each USB Root Hub, choose Properties > Power Management and untick the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option. 2) Next, right-click the Windows Icon > Power Options. Set both "Screen" and "Sleep" options here to 'Never'. Set the Power Scheme to High Performance (if this setting is not available, click on "Additional Power Settings" on the right side of the screen). Then click on Change plan settings. On the next page set both "Turn off the display" and "Put the computer to sleep" to "Never". 3) Then click Change advanced power settings. In the window that opens make sure you have the following settings: Hard disc > Turn off hard disk after > Setting (Minutes) = Never Sleep > Sleep after > Setting (Minutes) = Never USB settings > USB selective suspend setting > Setting = Disabled Display > Turn off display after > Setting (Minutes) = Never Processor power management > Minimum processor state > Setting = 100% Processor power management > Maximum processor state > Setting = 100% Please note, not all options are available on all machines. Advanced optimisation: If you wish to optimise your system further, or you are using a system that is particularly lacking in resources you can follow the tips below for advanced optimisation. Disable Sleep/Hibernate mode Sleep and Hibernate mode can cause problems on some systems. There are various sleep/hibernate states that different computers use and some system/device drivers may not work well when the computer comes out of these modes. If at all possible, it's worth disabling these modes to see if that improves your system's performance Sleep mode can be disabled by following steps 2 and 3 in the 'USB Optimisation' section above. This will prevent your computer automatically going to sleep (you should then avoid deliberately selecting 'Sleep' or 'Hibernate' from the Power Options menu). Disable Windows Firewall, anti-virus and spyware software If you're able to run your system without connecting to the internet then these should all be disabled to ensure that no interferences occur during audio recording or playback and to ensure that maximum resources are available. To remain secure while your firewall and antivirus disabled, it is advisable to disconnect from any internet connections when working with audio. This will also make sure that no network adapters are conflicting with any audio drivers. Disable Visual effects The visual features in Windows 10 can use resources that could otherwise help to improve audio performance. As a start, it is good idea to disable some of the visual features by doing the following: - Bring back up the "Performance Options" window by following step 3 above and clicking on the "Visual Effects" tab and selecting "custom". - Untick: "Animate windows when minimising and maximising" to help prevent glitches when minimising and maximising. You can also experiment with disabling other visual effects in the custom list to see how they improve audio performance. - Once finished, press "OK" If you wish to optimise your Windows 10 graphics for the best performance use the "Adjust for best performance" option. Disable Network cards Sometimes, network card drivers can cause problems with audio. A good troubleshooting step is to try disabling your network adapters in Device Manager, and then test local audio (like an .mp3) and see if you continue to have issues. This is also a good optimisation step in general. Disabled adapters can easily be re-enabled at any point. Disable Windows services One way in which you can make more resources available to improve audio performance, is to disable unnecessary Windows 10 services as these use valuable resources. The following site has a comprehensive guide to the services running on Windows 10 and helps locate the services that are safe to disable: Windows 10 Service Configurations by Black Viper Please note that we would recommend that disabling Windows services should be done only by advanced users. If you are still experiencing audio performance problems after optimising your computer for audio, please Contact Technical Support Disable Fast Boot Some users may experience an issue where audio becomes slowed down after booting the computer. This is fixed by disabling fast boot.

A couple things Joe...although my experience is beyond much of this video this is hands down THEE BEST video I have seen on the topic of Latency! GREAT JOB! Ironically I ran into a guy today who just bought a Presonus small interface which came with the light version of S1 and was asking me DAW to use to which I said S1 and actually recommend he follow your tutorials to learn ;). I use a UA Apollo Firewire Quad with the Unison technology so my latency for recording is around 4 MS. The big issue with Latency is the switching back and forth between low for recording and high for mixing. Not sure if it's even possible but a great feature to add would be to have "recording mode" where you can set a very low latency then a "Mix mode" where you can have a preset higher latency. Just a though? A side note, a little late in the game but some of the Presonus shortcuts could be more intuitive. For example...I use R for Record and I for Inspector. That's the way it was in Cakewalk Sonar and it makes sense so I customized that in S1. Love your videos though man and hope to run into you around town here in Nashvegas :), cheers, Chris

Buffer does this
@chrisdunnettmusic4 жыл бұрын
@@jmorrisey79 Explain please?
@jmorrisey794 жыл бұрын
@@chrisdunnettmusic - It's the buffer that you want to set low for recording and high for mixing. This does affect latency.. lower buffer = lower latency and vice versa, but the setting you change is called the buffer. It's discussed in this video. I understand you were talking about an easier way to switch it, but I was clarifying the setting you change in case anyone reading this wasn't aware. I doubt they could simply add a "mode" of some sort because it would be completely dependent on the type of interface being used, of which there are so many, of different specs, by different manufacturers, which require different drivers. If the drivers are poorly written there's nothing that can fix that aside from updating the driver with a fix, which unfortunately isn't always done. Even if the interface is otherwise very good it'll operate like crap with bad drivers. Presonus can fix their own drivers (even though they haven't in the past - VSL Line), but their hands are tied when it comes to the thousands of other models on the market. A simple solution seems impossible in my opinion based on that alone. I'm sure there are other factors involved as well. This just is the first that comes to my mind. Again, this is only my opinion though. I very well could be wrong.
@chrisdunnettmusic4 жыл бұрын
@@jmorrisey79 Gotcha. Yes, I'm aware that's what needs to be set and yes, I agree and realize there are many factors involved such as your interface (in my case a UA Apollo) so I realize it may be an impossible feature to add...sure would be nice though to have a preset for "Record" and a preset for "Mix" that changed all those settings at once :). Thanks man!

We could possibly add a keyboard shortcut for changing buffer settings, but it's not terribly hard to go change that setting. And the great thing about keyboard shortcuts in Studio One is you can customize them to your liking. Lots of other DAWs don't give you that option. - Joe Gilder

Joe always a pleasure to learn from you. I noticed in applying this lesson how changing the settings impacted my analog audio differently from MIDI signal. While I did not get clipping on my analog signal, after optimizing my interface based on this lesson, I noticed MIDI-clipping -- which surprised me -- I didn't think a MIDI signal could be clipped. Once I reverted my settings to a bigger buffer size, the MIDI-clipping went away. This was not specifically covered in this lesson, but something that might be a good future lesson. If I am recording a signal instrument at a time I can change the settings as needed to minimize delay. However, of I'm recording milultiple analog and MIDI sources at the same time, like in a live studio session in studio, I have to sacrafice one for the other.

hey Joe.. local neighborhood simpleton with a dumb question here, but i'm having a bit of trouble with hardware monitoring vs native low latency monitoring. first off, it seems like hardware monitoring is generally faster than native/software. also, my "Z" icon lights up blue when using hardware monitoring if i have an interface connected that supports it (Presonus 1810c) but it lights up green when i click the option to use native low latency instead of hardware monitoring - i noticed at 5:16 yours remained green even when it seems you are using hardware monitoring. that's mostly just a point of curiosity. my main question is can you monitor channels being fed by inputs transmitted over ADAT to the interface with hardware monitoring selected? i have an external preamp that feeds its 8 inputs to the 1810c via ADAT, and when i opt for hardware monitoring (blue "Z") i cannot hear them in real time monitoring.... but i CAN hear monitored tracks/channels that are sourced from inputs on the 1810c itself. if i switch over to using native low latency for monitoring (green "Z") i can hear all channels when monitoring in low latency. .. is that... correct? i could have sworn i was just doing some recording last night with the blue Z and recording from some of those external preamp ADAT channels, but maybe i was using native low latency.. it was late, my memory fails me.

@SaintKines3 жыл бұрын
Same situation with trying to monitor just one track with Helix Native and STL Libra. Reaper works like a charm of course but when I'd try to do this simple task in Studio One it couldn't do it without spikes. The reason is Reaper and some others kind of take care of what he just showed us by default. One of the many reasons I love Reaper. I gave Studio One a real shot and I do like it but I'm back with the trusted Reaper. I'm not a brand fan boy so I'm always willing to try something out to see if I like it better. I've tried most DAWS but Studio One seemed like it could be the one to usurp Reaper for me. I definitely like it more than all other DAWs I've tried not named Reaper. I still have it installed and I plan on doing an entire big program in it from start to finish to see if I change my mind. Its default a great DAW, we just all have our different needs and tastes.

Hi Joe, I have just installed Studio One 6 by way of PreSonus Sphere subscription. My interface device is a Universal Audio Apollo Twin MkII quad core connected by thunderbolt to my iMac. I installed my Apollo in Audio Setup and a friend who also uses Studio One talked me through some configurations in Audio I/O Setup within Song Setup, but I think we've set it up wrong. The back panel of the Apollo has 2 XLR/TRS combo inputs labelled Mic/Line 1 and Mic/Line 2 and on the front panel it has a single TRS input which is supposed to be a dedicated instrument DI for guitar/bass. One of the input rows in Audio I/O Setup is labelled as Input L+R and set to stereo. Shouldn't all the inputs be set to mono and then assignment of which tracks are stereo or mono be configured within channel strips?

I'm recording music from a cassette (old radio show) but the volume is to high on my tracks left and right. When I go to the mix section and see the faders for the tracks and try to pull them down, nothing happens???? how do I lower the input volume?

Joe I tried to record a download vocal, spoken word, and I added two loops each on their own track. I hit record but I only hear one track the other two seem to go blank and I have to hit undo record for them to come back. Why is that? And how do I fix it?

Brand new to Presonus today, migrating from another DAW. Nice TUT. LOVE tuts that cover items quickly and clearly. Thanks very much Joe.

I can't find the Z-button. Is this because this is an old feature that is gone in 6.2?

My computer Sspecs is more than double recomended for S1 Pro. However certain vocalist preferto record wth a vocal chain. This causes dropouts, but only sometimes I would say 1 out of 10 recordings using same plugins in chain as well as main out. The "Green Z" will cause these plugins not to work properly, having the effectof my vocalist not being to happy while recording. Also going from "minimum" to anythhing more still causes some slight latency while on buffersize 64. block size samples. I used to be able to record perfectly with these settings and vocal chain but for some reason the past few weeks I get drop outs, which forces menow to go to to at least 128 block size. At 128, I can start hearing some slight latency. Almost sounding as If there is a double track runing together with the main vocalist while recording. Nothing changed except 3rd party plugins in chain that updated to latest versions. I also use mostly native stock plugins, wwhiich make up about 98% of the plugins i use. I would like for evrytning to work as before where I recorded 1 vocal track with one instrumnetal and my vocal chain at 64 block size and "minimum" under the processing. Can you help?

There seems to be no way of punching in (while hearing the previous track up to that point) and still recording while monitoring plugins. EX: I'm trying to record a guitar while monitoring Ampire with some distortion. As long as the blue monitor input button is on I'm fine. But go to punch in. I need to turn off the input monitor so that I can hear the punch point but now loose the Ampire (channel plug in) effects on the guitar. After much experimentation I found that if I record the guitar on 2 tracks simultaneously with the same plugins and keep the input monitor on for one track and off for the other I can get my desired end. Seems like the long way around but it works. Any other ideas?
