Good overview. There's one important thing missing though: a VCA will actually change the volume of the track and as a consequence change the volume of sends on that track as well, while a bus will not. An obvious example is a track with a send to a reverb FX-channel: if you lower the bus volume to -infinite then the reverb sound will remain; if you lower the VCA the reverb sound will go down with it. It's basic logic really but I missed that logic as a beginner :)

I have been watching your videos for about a year now, and very enjoyable and informative. I just went from analog tape to computer based recording with Studio One. I am still using all my off board analog gear, just using the computer as a tape machine. But I would like to see all 24 channels/tracks and the master fader of Studio One in full screen. I don't know how to do that. I can get all 24 channels/tracks in a smaller size but not full screen. Can you tell me how to do that? Thank you.

In Studio One...Do you create a separate Bus and use it as your Mix Bus, where all your Mix Bus processing goes on and leave the Main Out empty/ only issue for monitor plugins? Or do you use your Main Out as your Mix Bus with i.serts and Mix Bus processing?

@mbroderick19842 жыл бұрын
Joe, I'm brand new to audio recording. In studio one, is it ok to just add plug ins like effects an individual channel? Or is it better to create an effects channel and send the signal there? Also, how come the gain settings look ok in the individual tracks, but terrible in the main output?
@L.Scott_Music3 жыл бұрын
Just a quick note about VCA, if you have a VCA controlling a number of audio channels that feed to a buss channel that has, for instance a compressor or a reverb, then changing the VCA will effect how those channels go into the buss channel FX. I.e., lowing the VCA would cause the compressor to not be hit as hard. Correct?

Even though I’ve been using studio one for a few years there’s always something new to learn, or to refresh. Good info bro. Question. Why when I record an audio track the wave form doesn’t appears on my track? I always have to use normalize audio. Thanks.
@audio_odyssey3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the level you record at. There is a waveform zoom in the bottom right corner. It will zoom but not change the level.

Are you using studio one 4?

@basscase783 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe for this explanation. I feel like the weakness of how PreSonus has VCA's is that when you change the VCA level (and the corresponding channels also change) you are then affecting how the compression, verb, delay, levels respond if their is a plug in on any of those channels. Does that make sense? Like we work hard to get the compression levels just write on a channel, and then the VCA messes that up if we are just trying to make a volume change to a group. For that reason I skip using VCA and just use busses in S1.
@presonus3 жыл бұрын
That's not true. Compressor plugins come BEFORE the fader, so moving the fader doesn't change the compression. - Joe Gilder

Why does the mixer make multiple tracks if you don’t have more than one or two tracks🤔
@Trashpanda_40411 ай бұрын
You said ONLY difference from Bus and FX is sends, but Bus also has the Mix FX… Just started using so S1. My understanding from everything I’ve watched from PreSonus, and mentioned it, we only need 1 Mix FX insert which affects entire mix? Maybe I’m wrong or misunderstood.

@stupendousmusic41903 жыл бұрын
Excellent as always Joe! I can see how the VA could make things confusing for some. Grouping channels offer the same adjustability, without the VCA. Yes, of course, a VCA or bus channel would be needed in order to instantiate a group effect, but for overall adjustability, why would there really be any advantage, or can it be thought of as just an alternative approach?

@rogerjerde63 жыл бұрын
Related to the question below about why use a FX instead of a bus, why use a VCA? Assuming you are top-down mixing, you've already bused the tracks/channels you want grouped, right? Or is this for the oddball situations where you want to automate juicing, say, the kick and the bass, while decreasing the drum bus? What circumstances make you reach for the VCA?
@presonus3 жыл бұрын
Mainly if I want to automate two buss faders at the same time, VCA makes that easy. - Joe Gilder
@rogerjerde63 жыл бұрын
@@presonus Oh, I see. Otherwise you would have to do something like send both buses to another bus, then reroute the output of each bus back to the main or wherever you had it going before. Much easier. Thanks.

One of the things I never really understood is why would you use ever an FX instead of a Bus with no send? There have been occasions I later went back to a FX bus and wished it had a send so now I just ignore the FX bus completely and always use a regular Bus so that I always have the "option" of a send. If I did it the other way around (starting with an FX always) then I'd have to recreate the bus later on if I change my mind and want a send. It just seems like FX is a lessor version of a Bus? Does it save on processing or something vs. a Bus with no send?
@Uberkoolsound3 жыл бұрын
Ian Johnson I think it’s just for OCD clean freaks...... like me 😂
@VitalyPashkov3 жыл бұрын
Same thoughts. I'am using a S1 for many years now and i never liked the idea of this limited FX bus and i'm always using a full featured BUS instead of FX.
@ianjohnson35463 жыл бұрын
@@Uberkoolsound Yeah I suppose the only thing I can really tell that is a difference is say exporting your STEMS you could easily view which tracks you are using as just a FX destination for organizing your exports? When you go to export you can quickly select stuff like 'all tracks', 'all bus', 'all FX'. For me I just use a bus and start the name of the bus off with FX. Easy enough to see for me.
@Ernestasish3 жыл бұрын
Propably you can save a tiny amount of processing power if you route two or more Instruments into the same effects channel instead of opening a new instance for the same effect.
@perspers20303 жыл бұрын
I have to go back and check and correct me if im wrong. Does the return panning in fx and bus act different unless you put a dual pan on the bus insert. But i agree. I just started using fx when i know the send will not be bussed again. Like drum verbs.

Ok why would I do a reverb on a bus instead of a fx again? Because I already been doing that for years, just still didn’t know the logistics differences
@bebop4253 жыл бұрын
The FX channel can be controlled separately from the non FX channel via the send. You can then automate and manage the FX channel while the main channel stands alone. Like, say you want the reverb to come in on a specific part, automate the FX channel to turn up then down. Can't do that with the bus without also changing the original audio

Alright, your videos are starting to make sense. Maybe someone can answer a ? for me? How do i transfer a drumless track from Dropbox to my faders, so i can add drums to a track?
@bebop4253 жыл бұрын
Download the track, drag it right into your open song in S1 on an empty section. It will insert it. Then add your new drum tracks. When you first save,answer yes when prompted to copy the external audio you dragged in so it moves into the song permanently.
