Sends sends sends! What is a send and what is it used for? Where does it go? What does it sound like? Why use a send instead of something else?
This week we are taking a look at sends and going over everything you need to know about them. This video is for the beginner or intermediate engineers out there, but it's also good to have a refresher for the more experiences out there.
Have a question about Presonus Studio One? Ask in the comments and I'll make your question into a video for everyone else to learn from!

I use sends a bit with instrument buses. I begin mixing drums on one channel. I'm trying things out there before I hit individual tracks. Edit: Stacking the delay into reverb is a pretty cool thing! It's what I do to my guitar with pedals. Never thought to do it during mixing.

2nd question... I want to take a mono source, like bass guitar, and apply some saturation/distortion only to the high frequencies (like 4k and above maybe) and push it out to the sides (far L&R) only during the choruses, what is the best or easiest way to do this in S1? I already tried creating a send, high-passing up to 3-4k, adding distortion, and then using Binaural Pan and Ozone Imager to push it far L/R, but it still sounds mono and centered. Now I"m thinking M/S EQ (and roll off the mids), or maybe getting creative with the Splitter tool. But wondering if you have a good way of accomplishing this.

Dithering - descriptive of an old person or couple who shamble along in the supermarket and they are always in front of you, usually stopping every 6 paces to casually browse something they will never buy whilst moaning about the weather, the price of stamps or why the bus never showed up.

Thanks Tim. If you d like to increase the amount of reverb on a chorus only (not the volume/loudness) how would you do that ? You would increase the send level or you d raise the bus « room » fader ?
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Either! Increasing the send will increase how much of just that source is going to the reverb. Increasing the reverb return will increase the volume of ALL elements in the reverb. So I would suggest pushing the send level, unless you want all the reverb to be louder!

Hi Tim, How would I create a Stereo Buss for an effects return to use with say a ping pong delay for instance, where you want to pan the effects return Hard Left and Hard Right for the widest stereo spread. I have Eventide H3000 plugin also which benefits being panned hard left and hard right on the returns. Thanks as always. Phil NYC Area
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 2 жыл бұрын
By default, FX channels and Buses are stereo. FX Channels with a mono plugin will just populate both channels with the same signal. When you use a stereo plugin (like S1's Analog delay) and are using something like Ping-Pong style, the left and right will be auto assigned in the FX or Bus channel and you'll be mixing with stereo effects!
@uptownphotography
@uptownphotography 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimTalksAudio Thanks for this info Tim. So with a stereo effect where hard left and right panning is necessary for the effect to be heard properly, the buss (or FX channel) will have the left and right already panned extreme left and right. Is that correct? Thanks! Phil

Hello. I don't know if it was this video or another of yours about sends . But I'm confused... Why use sends if they have no way to get to a buss? It seems like a send is either a dead end street OR you have to ride send faders during mixing while the busses have already done their work
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio Жыл бұрын
Think of it the other way around. If I have a bunch of vocals going to a fx channel or bus, I can ride that bus fader and adjust the overall level of the reverb (if that’s what we are doing in this example). Use a send if you need to create an exact duplicate of your signal to “send” somewhere else for further manipulation. You only need to ride the send fader if you are in pre-fader send mode, or you have a purpose to do so in your production (like a vocal throw!).

Question... I have observed that several of the really big name engineers do NOT route their sends (particularly reverbs and delays) through the mixbus/2-bus channel. They have them going to the main out (where there is no processing). Any idea why they do that? I would think that for cohesion sake you would want those going through the main bus compressors with everything else. Any thoughts on that?
@marymoon96
@marymoon96 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I do, but doesn't the mix bus go into the mains and so it still gets to the mains, just not as directly? Or am I not understanding a flow concept?
@TimmSpinn
@TimmSpinn 2 жыл бұрын
@@marymoon96 the mixbus does go into the main out, but the processing is done on the mixbus channel and the main out is only used for speaker calibration, metering, references, etc. What I'm saying is that their sends are going right past the bus compressors and such, and go straight out.

Here's my (probably dumb) question: If I record 8 backing vocals and pan each of the tracks to a different place on the stereo image, THEN send all 8 tracks to a reverb bus, how do I preserve the stereo image I created? Because the bus just has just one pan control, it takes the copy of the vocal with reverb applied and just sends it to wherever that pan control is set. So if I pan the tenor hard to the left, someone with headphones who is listening to my song will hear dry tenor voice in the left ear if my reverb channel pan is set straight down the middle.
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 7 ай бұрын
What version of Studio One are you using? With some updates, the sends pan can be linked to follow the channel fader, or be isolated and moved wherever you want.

@@TimTalksAudio Thanks for the reply and the reference to the other video - that was helpful! Panning sends works great when I'm sending to a channel for reverb and/or delay. If I'm processing a bunch of vocals (or drums, etc.) by routing them (not sending them) through a bus channel, I'm still not sure how I can preserve the pans I placed on each individual BGV or drum track. Does that make sense?

Sound gets double in bus sends. How to deal??
@TimTalksAudio
@TimTalksAudio 3 ай бұрын
Are you sending to a bus for parallel processing or an FX return? If so, proceed to inserting your plugin on that new bus and blend to taste ( put the plugin to 100% wet). If you are trying to have a few tracks SUM to a bus, don't use a send, but route the tracks to a bus. You can do this by mutli-selecting the tracks, then right or alternate clicking and selecting Add bus for selected tracks.
