It really looks like she passed the first time to avoid hitting a Whammy at that stage. You can see she's nervous in those first few spins she takes, and though she doesn't quite shed that, she gets better as things go on. No one could have predicted that Cathy would gain so much out of just those 3 spins, therefore making each subsequent pass (by the both of them) pretty much necessary.

Stupid swine. Even back then I felt she was one. When Randy finally got his turn to spin, after hitting $5,000 he should have already passed all of his remaining spins to Lori to possibly get her to whammy and feel what Cathy did. I would have done that if I was a contestant knowing that someone was made to lose over $30,000.

A Whammy was hit with $35K in Summer 1986, right after hitting Double your $$ with $17,500. They also chopped up the spelling of the correct answer to the fourth question in round two. Interesting that the last square Cathy hit before the whammy was $1K and a spin in the same corner where DOuble your $$ was lurking. Came close to being a $60K whammy loss.
