Tim played a clean game through and through. At the end, John felt like there was no way he and Laurie could do anything about it. A good idea, considering that the whammy hurt his chance to keep close to Tim. However, Tim was just untouchable and the whammies just kept missing him.

It wouldn’t have been the first time they scrapped the ending and tried again. There was an episode with an extremely low number of spins in Round 2 and the producers decided no, we’re running this back and played another Round 2.

Upon double-checking this myself...no. Captain Marvel and Shazam were separate entities at this time. Captain Marvel could be referred to interchangeably with the name "Shazam", but there was a separate being named only Shazam, who was the wizard who bestowed the powers that composed Captain Marvel. Shazam was the wizard, Captain Marvel/Shazam was the champion, so to speak. The two names weren't merged (with "Shazam" supplanting "Captain Marvel") until March 2012. I will say it is confusing enough that perhaps they should not have even featured the question, but the ruling isn't completely incorrect.
