Time has changed. I used to binge watch M*A*S*H the 4077 series, then WINGS the TV series of Sandpiper Airline from Nantucket. Now I binge watch Boldmethod videos. Keep up the good work.

Great presentation. I might add this: At about 24:40 the presenter talks about flying isobars above 18k ft by setting 29.92 pressure altitude. NWS uses the term "isobar" to describe lines of equal pressure on a Surface analysis chart. When they refer to the lines on a constant pressure chart, say 500mb, 18k, NWS refers to them as "height contours". I know this is a bit nuanced, but it might help understand and differentiate those squiggly lines on surface charts as opposed to upper air constant pressure charts. In other words, at or above 18k, setting 29.92 PA ATC requirement, all aircraft are riding up and down "height contours" not isobars.

Good point. The correct meteorological term would be "isohypses".

As you were answering the 'cant they automate altimeter' question, I believe it would be appropriate to say that altimeter measures altitude relatively to something: sea level, airport elev and maybe talk a little on qnh/qfe... Novice aviators usualy have at least some degree of difficulty understanding qnh/qfe and grasping this concept really helps self-answer the 'automation' question

So from my understanding, changes in air pressure are caused by changes in density. Changes in density are caused primarily by changes in temperature. So the pressure (I think) already takes into account temperature. So why doesn't pressure altitude account for temperature? If temperature is a factor of density, and therefore pressure, shouldn't pressure altitude already take temperature into account? I understand that pressure does not equal density, and using the ideal gas law, if temperature increases but pressure stays the same, density must decrease. But if temperature affects both density and pressure, how can an increase in temperature NOT affect pressure?

Why do performance charts use pressure altitude and not density altitude. Since density altitude takes temperature into account. Wouldn’t it be a more accurate indicator of what the airplane will feel.

16:30 - I am not 100% sure, but as far as I know typical analogue altimeter has a non-linear mechanism inside it, that it indicates the altitude according to the logarithmic H and p relation as ISA describes. Therefore, the thing that causes the main instrument error is just the local atmosphere pressure gradient different then this logarithmic graph.

I mean that the aneroid mechanism inside it does not present a linear movement of 27ft of indication per hPA

Just one thing. The 29.95inHg pressure is NOT a middle number, it's a reference pressure. 29.921 inHg equals 1013.25 hPa, or 760 mmHg, or 1 atm, and is the atmospheric pressure at sea level, at 45 deg latitude, at a temp of 0° C. In meteorology that is called "normal atmospheric pressure".

Great video! I would have used the actual altimeter setting for Denver instead of using a made up one as 29.92 is standard for sea level and Denver is much higher than sea level.

Awesome video. One question though, why exactly does the altimeter increase in altitude with higher pressure and decrease with lower pressure? It’s probably me just overthinking everything but I just want to know the reason behind it.

i wonder what we'd need on Mars to take off and fly around. Assuming we picked a spot where it was Earth-like temps at the time, as -140 deg F ain't gonna work at all. A Cessna 172 in the atmosphere devoid of humidity and pressure much lower i think...maybe it would need a greater speed to take off? Average surface pressure on Mars is 6-7 millibars or 0.17718 inches of Hg!
