Dead weight calibration is a primary standard method used to calibrate pressure gauges. In this method, a known mass is applied to a piston that rests on a measuring surface and the resulting pressure is measured by the pressure gauge being calibrated. The pressure is calculated by dividing the mass applied to the piston by the effective area of the piston. The process is repeated with increasing weights until the full range of the pressure gauge is covered.
The main advantage of the dead weight calibration method is that it provides a highly accurate and traceable calibration, as the mass used for calibration is traceable to the International System of Units (SI). The method is suitable for calibrating a wide range of pressure gauges, including low-pressure and high-pressure gauges, with high accuracy and repeatability.
In practice, dead weight calibration requires specialized equipment, including a dead weight tester, a piston and cylinder, and weights with traceable mass. The process is usually carried out in a controlled environment to minimize the effects of temperature and other variables that can affect the accuracy of the calibration.

You should rotate the masses before taking the readings, to ensure there is no effect of the piston touching the wall of the tube.

Very interesting : thank you for sharing ! I am planning to build suche a "calibration" device for a DIY project. and this will be precious However, I noted a few things /question. 1-Air bubbles DON'T impact pressure reading...in fact this aparatus could operate on air pressure as well (if the piston fits accuratly enough and you allow for a little constant air inlet in the circuit (small enough that the pressure loss in the circuit can be neglected) 2- Two digit on the spread sheet is jut out of purpose : the instrument you are testing has a 10 kN/m² scale, it's not supposed to read 19... same apply to the gravity value 9.81 is WAY too accurate (it's LOWER than 9.80 in Dallas or L.A.). 3- I wonder what diameter the tube/piston is. It's not making any sense in mm nor Imperial. 244.8 mm² is not a round value either... 3- Seting up an experiment with water on a wooden bench is probably not the best idea.
