Thanks for your question, yes you could just run the car for a while in some cases. The leak can also be small or in a place that you cant see with the engine hot. By doing a pressure a test, the engine is cold so the possibly of getting burned is gone. Also the potential for injury with moving belts is also an issue with the engine running.
