Preston to Carlisle

A trip up the West Coast Main Line from Preston to Carlisle on a TransPennine Express Class 350/4. Its a lovely ride through Lancashire and on into Cumbria. We skirt round the edge of the Lake District and negotiate Shop Summit. As always, there is some discussion about signalling and we discuss a couple of very unfortunate incidents.

I dont understand how this video can get 33 dislikes. This is a Train journey and you don't get any better than watching Don Coffey recording them. There are some strange people out here. My self and thousands of others love these recordings, keep them coming Don!!

There are various reasons for dislikes Peter. Some simply don’t like how I’ve presented it and some searched for something else but got a cab ride. Some get hacked off with the adverts and some will pick up on my spelling of the fact I use captions instead of a voiceover. I’ve accidentally hit dislike instead of like before now but usually correct it. You can’t please all of the folks all of the time but I really appreciate your support.

Thanks for this great video and even more for the interesting info. I run Train Sim and I'm interested in creating scenarios as close to real life as poss... Looking at www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P58639/2019/08/28/advanced for 1S63, there are three columns for timings: WTT; GBTT and Real Time. Can you throw some light on them please? I'm trying to keep to WTT - but in a class 91 (my favourite loco.) I'm assuming the 350 you're driving here and the 390 presently being used on this have better acceleration?

Fantastic as ever Don, thank you. As a teenager in the mid 70's I made the trip from Euston to Carlisle and back on a football special. I remember we seemed to spend an awful lot of time in those passing loops and broke down near Lancaster for an hour. I've always loved train travel so I wasn't too bothered. What bothered me was that we got beat!

Another mesmerizing video. I’ve driven this route on the Keith Ross recreation in Train Simulator so often I know it like the back of my hand. I’m amazed at how accurately he modeled the entire route. And it looks the same today as his modeling of the 70s period. Thanks so much. A lot of time when into producing this video.

Thanks Don, great as ever. In January's 1983 (I think it was, or 1980), while visiting UK, I travelled the Cumbrian coast line from Carlisle to Preston. There had been wild storms and the wires on the WCML were down, preventing all passenger train running. Our diesel-hauled train was the first into Lancaster for a day or so, and passengers crowded onto it. Astoundingly, I saw a massive wave almost wash over the Whitehaven lighthouse at the end of the breakwater.

In 1964, myself, my mum and 2 little brothers were on the last steam train out of Liverpool Exchange Station taking this same route to Carlisle. I remember spam sandwiches, biscuits and orange squash, and the smell of smoke. FC after more than 50 years, it is still the most memorable journey. Love trains 😍

What a great trip...kind of takes me down memory lane. Way back in 73 (seriously), I remember as a 14 year old 'anorak' going over Shap summit with a pair of Class 50's. About a year later I did the same trip with a class 86. Somewhere around Tebay the 86 failed with, I think, some kind of 'flashover' on the pantograph. We were in the middle of a blizzard at the time. I remember being sat there for more than an hour before a Class 47 hauled us to Carlisle.

Another great vid Don. Reminded me of a half second of total panic I once had. Driving up the unlit M6 on the stretch between Preston and Lancaster when in the corner of my eye my brain picked out the red lights strung along (as I thought then) the base of a juggernaut coming down a slip road on my left. Thought I’d gone past my junction but it was a train coming into the brief, parallel and adjacent bit. Thanks Don.

I enjoyed that very much. Often travelled it but never from the cab. Very useful information in the footnotes. I was reminded of a book by Terry Coleman entitled, 'The Railway Naavies', that tells the human story of the men who built the railways. We take them for granted now, but it was all a work of great human strength and endurance. There is also a fascinating and detailed biography of George Parker Bidder, the Victorian engineer, that gives great insight into the designing and development of the railways. Quite apart from the engineering challenges many political challenges also had to be overcome.

@@doncoffey5820 How kind of you to reply Don. I greatly enjoyed your video. It was our Economic History lecturer at Glasgow who told his class to read The Railway Naavies. It sheds much light on the railway building period, but also gives a human dimension to the period that is I think largely ignored. I met E F Clark, the author of Bidder's biography - his great, great grandson, also an engineer, and he gave a talk about his forbear that was so interesting I looked out for his book, and indeed it doesn't disappoint. Oddly, Bidder is hardly known of nowadays, although everyone knows of his contemporary, IK Brunel. But Brunel considered Biddder to be his equal as an engineer. The book is hard to come by now, but is generally available second-hand (I got my copy through Amazon). It gives great insight into Victorian economic and social development. Bidder was a railway engineer in his own right, but was also a friend and colleague of the great railway engineer, Robert Stephenson so we learn about him as well. Happy reading!

@@doncoffey5820 I think you'll find we are the ones who are learning from you! It's good when people who know a lot about something are prepared to work at sharing it with many others on You Tube. The Railway building age was indeed a time of amazing achievement. All stemming of course from the fruits of the Industrial Revolution in which Britain led the way (something now apparently forgotten by a modern "woke" elite determined to rubbish this country at every turn!). The remarkable development of the railways is taken for granted by most people apart from those such as you who know about it. Bidder belonged to first period of railway building and his biography delves deep into that. Of course Acts of Parliament had to be passed to allow individual lines to be built so the high-profile engineers such as John Rennie and Robert Stephenson being established in their profession had some advantage. Bidder himself, as well as being an accomplished engineer, also had from childhood a prodigious ability at mental arithmetic and was dreaded by his opposition when he appeared at parliamentary committees since he could look at any figures of projected costs and work out the full implications at first sight! I wonder how many of our railway lines were built only because things went well or badly at some committee hearing. Yes, you will enjoy his biography very much!

Lovely video. I grew up in a little village (Halton On Lune) near Lancaster, and spent many a Saturday hanging over the bridge at Hest Bank watching the passing traffic. After 20+ years living in the USA (mostly round Chicago) I am still daily 'homesick' for Lancashire, the Lake District, and the countryside of the UK overall. Thank you for posting these! Going to resume watching now as we pass through Milnthorpe (I can't resist saying that you need to take that extra 'e' you put in Miln(e)thorpe and put it where it belongs in MorEcambe :D )

I'd never travelled the route, beyond Lancaster, anyway, but I've done it on Train Simulator WCML Over Shap, and it's a surprisingly good recreation. Must look out next time for low flying crows.

Its actually quite a wide angle lens which makes it look much faster than it really is. The later films are better. I couldn’t get in the cab on that one although I have a general green light at TPE I still have to have a rubber stamp and I just turned up on that day as I was travelling to Edinburgh. I just asked the driver (who I know) if I could stick a camera in the opposite cab window.

Yes, we were lucky to some extent as the driver can’t see the second mans window and forgot to switch the wiper on so if it had rained hard, it would have ruined the footage.

This is so interesting. To see a driver's view over Shap is amazing. I think of all the effort entailed by loco crews in steam days and those glorious Stanier Pacifics and how today's trains barely notice the gradient. Your description of the safety systems contrasts with the idiocy of some road users (e.g. the closeness of the lorries at 45.23).

Interesting ride. Thanks for the answer to the chime sound. One freight [goods] train meet. With the goods loop and the up loop, I thought your freight trains were channeled over different lines so the passenger trains could rock 'n roll. Like the country side, especially in the lake district. I was hoping we'd pass through Dibley so I could wave at Dawn French.

Another enjoyable way to spend an hour racing through the countryside. Your network is so much faster than in Australia. Even the high speed VLocity DMU's in Victoria only manage 100mph in short bursts. Thanks again. Cheers.

We have indian local trains doing max 60 mph and here this one is probably as fast as our mainline express trains at 70 mph. I personally love the acceleration sound of this 4 coach Class 350 and would try to blow the high pitch horn like we do in case of the Rajdhani Express. And well Mr. Don, the video is great and I find this ride exhilarating indeed. UK does have some pretty fast trains. My personal favorite classes are the 350, 379, 390, 397 and the latest Class 800.
