thanks for bringing up Rikkon. Since the Night's Watch and the Wall are sacrosanct to the North, If Jon showed up at Winterfell, most of the families would kill him as a deserter.

Or the Ryswells would bring him back and freeze him in ice like the old 79 deserters story.
@brendam.890610 жыл бұрын
The King in the North would be releasing him from his vows and he would be naming him his heir. The northerners wouldn't kill him if he was pardoned, which he would be if he was named heir.
@bryankarman10 жыл бұрын
Canche M I don't think you can be pardoned from the knights watch. Only death releases you from your vows. and Robb knew them.
@brendam.890610 жыл бұрын
Bryan Karman Robb's logic was that if Joffrey was able to release Ser Barristan from the Kingsguard, then he was able to release Jon from the Night's Watch. Plus to appease the Night's Watch, he was going to send a hundred men to join the watch in Jon's stead.
@bryankarman10 жыл бұрын
Canche M Hmm. Is that something he said it the books? (The bit about the reference to Barristan) I can't remember I do remember the 100 men bit? I don't think Robb want to follow in Joffrey's foot steps and make the same mistakes he has done to piss everyone off?
@tomflynn5410 жыл бұрын
Catelyn being the heir is off in my opinion however I think Jon isn't either. Benjen seems like the most likely choice. I have always been of the opinion that Robbs letter made Benjen King of the North and Jon his heir to Winterfell. To tie the Riverlands to the North a marriage would be needed so Benjen and Cat would be married and THAT is why he needed his mothers approval. That is why Cat was going to be sent North with Jeyne after Edmures wedding. That is why Robb says Jon would never harm my children. He was going to give guardianship of winterfell and his children to Jon but The North to Benjen.
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin10 жыл бұрын
I agree that a marriage supplement would make the most sense regardless of who was named.
@brendam.890610 жыл бұрын
Everyone thinks Benjen is dead. He has been missing for a year and a half years by the time of the red wedding. It wouldn't make sense if Robb gave the crown to a person who is most likely dead.
@tomflynn5410 жыл бұрын
It is never mentioned by Robb that his Uncle is missing to my knowledge. It is just in Jon POVs he may not know whats happening at the wall.
@brendam.890610 жыл бұрын
A raven was sent to Winterfell when Benjen went missing and I believe that at the time, Robb was still in Winterfell.
@tomflynn5410 жыл бұрын
Could be. I might be remembering it wrong. The letter could also legalize Jon and make him King of the North but in response to Robbs death he must marry Jeyne Westerling. That would explain why Robb says Jon would never harm my children. Robbs children would have a better claim then Jons with Jeyne. However that would not tie the Riverlands to the North.
@Genarii3 жыл бұрын
I think the Manderlys don't mention the fact that "Arya" is really Jeyne Poole (or at least not Arya) for a good reason: The treatment of "Arya Stark" is one of the factors making the other northerners upset with the Boltons. If everyone knew it was just some stand-in they likely wouldn't much care, likely figuring said stand-in to be some random common girl who grey up at Winterfell and was a right age and hair color. It behoofs them to keep this secret until after the hammer comes down.
@mictilt10 жыл бұрын
Isn't it also funny that some of the older members of the Mountain Clans that joined Stannis but were too old to fight showed up at the Wall for Alys Karstark's wedding, "get a look at Jon Snow" and see what is going on there. How much evidence is there really that Robb would name Catelyn his heir when he clearly says that he needs someone that could led his army? While Catelyn is a Stark and knows a lot about diplomacy she doesn't know anything about commanding troops in battle. Jon does. Still I think you're right about there's a lot of evidence about people "feinting" allegiance to Stannis and the Boltons. Can't wait for part 2
@tomflynn5410 жыл бұрын
I thought that was important too. Big Bucket Wull and The Norrey are two of the most famous Northern Warriors and they went straight to the wall right before winter at Jons beckoning. I think Robbs letter legalized Jon and freed him of his vows but made him Benjens heir and named Benjen King of the North
@mezz09smezzanine10 жыл бұрын
Tom Flynn Well I was gonna suggest here that perhaps he'd put Cat in charge but also pick her out a general for the fighting, possibly even Jon... but Benjen is a stark, grew up in Winterfell, knows his way around battle and is even the right gender for Westeros customs. But then in what way did he trap Cat? and when all this talk of legitimizing Jon?
@tomflynn5410 жыл бұрын
He trapped Cat with a marriage to Benjen. To cement a Tully alliance. He legitimized Jon to be Benjens heir in the case Benjen and Cat don't produce one.

Catelyn doesn't refer to the will as a trap. She's referring to Rob's plan to take Moat Cailin. I don't remember the specifics but Robb had a plan to trick the Iron Born. I'm pretty sure she only mentions the word "trap" once in that chapter and it's not until the last sentence. She's definitely not referring to the will.

Awesome Analysis. On my re-read, I've noticed this little tidbit in A Clash of Kings: Catelyn: "Robb, you should ally with Renly." Robb: "Great idea. Why don't we send you as an envoy?" Catelyn: "Wtf Robb, my father is dying, my is place is by his side." Robb: Ok, if you don't go, I'll fucking send the Greatjon. Still no?" Catelyn: "grrhmlghrl..." Catelyn even refers to the whole thing as a "ploy". So yeah: Robb totally made Catelyn his heir.
@connor4435 Жыл бұрын
I’m not quite sure how that bit means he made Catlyn his heir, there’s a difference between suggesting a reasonable choice that Catlyn wouldn’t like (ie Jon as heir) and choosing an absolutely insane choice (ie Great Jon as peacemaker), if we wanted it to be more similar than Robb might have suggested someone with nothing to do with the north as heir or threatened to send Stevron Frey to meet with Renly

I don't really see how Rickon can be a part of any major plan. If he survived the taking of Winterfell, everyone would assume that Bran did as well. Bran would be the heir.
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin10 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point. The lords all seem to gloss over the existance of Bran. Some have suggested that the North is really against crippled people.
@brendam.890610 жыл бұрын
There is no guarantee that Bran lived. He could have died from starvation, or exposure, or someone could have captured him and killed him. If they know of a certainty that Rickon is alive, they are going to pin their hopes on him. They aren't going to wait to see if Bran shows up, they are going to play with the pieces that they have.
@jschoma114 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is theres no word or sign of Bran. If Bran worked with some northerners like seemingly Asha and Rickon did, then he would be on their radar. Also as Preston said, sadly he might not be deemed a suitable heir because of his physical condition, in the sense of reproduction ability, not handicap discrimination.

The Manderleys, Umbers and mountain clans are hedging their bets. If Stannis dies in the coming battle, they make Rickon the lord of Winterfell under Stannis, or keep him secret until they feel strong enough to overthrow Stannis. If Stannis is defeated and/or dies, they declare Rickon King in the North.
@MiddleEarthGirl758 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm thinking something similar. That they are using Stannis to kill as many Bolton men as possible with the hope they can retake Winterfell. And then surprise Stannis with, "nah....thanks for the help, but we have a King and his name is Rickon Stark." And what would Stannis be able to do? Nothing. His own forces were depleted and replaced with Northmen. He's surrounded and would have to surrender his claim to the North. But that's just my thinking.
@jacobenke79367 ай бұрын
@@MiddleEarthGirl75 100%, Stannis is a means to an end. I applaud Stannis' objective, but I don't think I'd be able to work with the man, and definitely not for him. Jon, I think, felt the same way. The North, for instance, would not take kindly to burning Weirwoods. They've fought wars over that shit. A lot of them.

2:03 I'm a bit late but fucking thank you. Finally someone points this out. I'm really not sure how literally everyone gets this point wrong. I just read the books for the first time but this stood out to me immediately. I knew some of the theories regarding the northern conspiracy and Jon Snow so I always thought Robb obviously chose Jon. After reading the chapter for myself it's actually quite obvious that it isn't him. In fact I am almost certain GRRM never even wanted us to think it was Jon. The last line of a chapter always has some sort of importance so I really don't know how literally everyone misses that line in particular

ASOIAF app gets it info from the books. In the books it never says the ACTUAL contents of the letter, just what Rob says to Catelyn. So in this case the App missed the step of seeing confirmation. This was an interesting vid. I knew there had been talk of the Northern conspiracy theory, but had not really investigated it. aside from knowing it was somehow linked to Jon. What really impressed me was that you like myself don't think Jon was named heir, the clues in the will chapter are quite tricky and I can definitely see why you came away with Cat, however I respectfully disagree. (This is the part where I usually say too much) the answer lies within the purse, you touched it as the future could be Cat, but the past was not and there is the trick.
@TheAppalachianEsq10 жыл бұрын
What?
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin10 жыл бұрын
Hmm, well Robb has two purses. Riverrun, where Jeyne is, and the mysterious Seagard. Why does Cat need to be in Seagard? Robb seems to have dragged Cat along just to get her there. I am actually quite baffled by that. And, of course, Jason Mallister after visiting Howland Reed returns to Seagard.
@MaesterPayne10 жыл бұрын
You're very good at your deductions Preston. I do think your slightly off but on the right track. By your questioning here I know I've said to much. But I'll step in it again with this. If your Brandon and Ashara theory is true the only way I see it working is Twins. That should help with your question here. Look to the worth...
@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin10 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I'm off track, but some people think that Meera is part of the baby mix. If Robb thinks Meera is the child of Brandon or Lyanna, then Jason could be fetching her and bringing her to Seagard for Cat. Of course, Meera would be gone, but Robb wouldn't know that. This would assume that someone told Robb about the ToJ, though.
@MaesterPayne10 жыл бұрын
Yes, Meera is a candidate. Last season The show even added it's own spin with Carl touching her hair, also her slitting Jojens throat in final episode. I'm not saying that with any certainty but is a mercy killing exempt from Kin slaying if Meera and Jojen are bro and sis? ..... Robb has been in contact with Howland since the first book, so it's possible Howland has sent word if Robb asked for advice. Remember in that Chapter Robb also states Theon as rightful heir as Balons son. I like this as a clue in Robb hates Theon at this point, yet still championing his claim by rights....odd since he previously was gonna stick Jon on the throne before Sansa. I think in the weeks he an Cat were not talking, he found out about another candidate. "My father knew Howland Reeds worth". Seems to me a floating island is a perfect place to hide a baby.

Robb would think "long and hard" about Jon because it's such a complicated choice. Like you said, he'd be a legitimised bastard and not a Tully. He'd have to find a way to maintain good relations with the Tullys with Jon on the throne in Winterfell. Not to mention that he's a man of the Night's Watch. So, he would need Catelyn's approval, to maintain that connection to the Tullys. And convincing Catelyn to approve of a man she sees as her husband's bastard to take the throne would be a cruel trick.

I like your videos but I think the beginning is a bit of a reach... I do think Robb was going to legitimize Jon, and even if Davos is successful in returning Rickon.. he is still a boy. I wouldn't hang my theory on the steak and kidney pie thing. Martin could have made a mistake, Mors might be forgetting, Mors might be tricking Jeyne, or they may still use the term steak for a thick-cut of any meat, not just beef. US English does not specify what type of steak, but in French, we use the term steak and then qualify the type of animal. Even here in the US, I've purchased beef steaks, ham steaks and swordfish steaks. Steak is the shape of the flesh cut so it is tender and so that it has a large surface area to grill, fry or broil (or even eat raw/crue).

You wanna know what's mildly frustrating? Book Stannis is still alive and freezing outside Winterfell with Theon chained to a wall, still plotting, and still dreaming of victory with his decimated forces. Meanwhile show Stannis died 10 years ago in a totally useless sacrifice taking his sacrificed daughter and suicided wife with him. And the best we're going to get in the next 10 years, maybe, is the "REAL" resolution of Stannis' story arc. Meanwhile it's 2021, there is no book 6, and I'm convinced I won't live to see book 7, since that'll take 20 more years...

With the Cat being made heir thing, all of Robb's vassals think Cat is a weak-willed pacifistic woman, and probably wouldnt follow her, especially if she wanted peace. (Cat is actually not as dumb and destructive to Robb's regime as people seem to think, releasing Jamie was unprecedented and Jamie knows it, and his odd sense of honor would probably force him to try and make peace with the Starks and get the release of Sansa. This is the kind of thing that would go down in history, Cat being "The Great Peacemaker". Robb's vassals are very jingoistic, effectively knocking down Cleos Frey and Jason Mallister (?)'s plan to wait to see who wins and fight or bend the knee to who wins.

you haven't mentioned much on Robett Glover . I think he's just about the biggest bamf in the North. this is your best since your honeyed locust video, btw !

Juding by the comments, you'll probably need to make a video on Benjen (as would Bon Jovi say, dead or alive) having read the tumblr stuff on the GNC, can't say I agree with your Cat thoughts. otherwise, brilliant as usual

I have to say, I really like your videos, although I don't completely agree with some things. You seem to always try and think a bit differently from the main theories people go for in forums, etc. For instance, I think naming Cat heir could be a nice alternative, because I've always thought it weird that if Jon was heir no word reached him. Even if he is, I don't think he'll end up as lord of WF, KitN, ultimate hero, etc (but I do love him

I really enjoy watching your videos. You are very well spoken, and I like your theories. If you take requests, could you please do a series on Littlefinger? How he has, thus far, used all the "players" in the 7 kingdoms like pieces on a chess board; His motivations; Your theories on what he wants (besides Sansa and her claim to the North) & What he is planning next. I've watched a couple of other videos on the subject of Littlefinger, but I think yours would be much better.

Littlefinger is an enormous topic and I do plan on getting to him. I will say that if you're interested in the Littlefinger master plan, I think the place to look is Braavos.

If Cat had no children who were not either presumed dead, married to the Lannisters, or Rob, it wouldn't make sense for Rob to make her heir. She's nearing the end of childbearing age (she thinks the opposite in Cat I AGoT but if it bears even thinking about, it can't be that far off, at least potentially). If she were to die childless it would create a destructive succession crisis. Who would succeed her? Edmure? Hoster? Brynden? The Karstarks? There would be a civil war in the North and Riverlands for sure, which is something Rob wouldn't want to lay the groundwork for in the middle of a war with the Lannisters. I agree that it probably wasn't Jon. Between bastardy and his Night's Watch vow, it's too much to overcome without creating a succession crisis in its own right, the Karstarks would have at least as good a claim as he would. There are two people we've overlooked though. First is Benjen. He's a trueborn Stark. Sure, he made a vow but so did Jon, so in all it's less of a stretch for him than for Snow. He was missing beyond the wall, but so was Jon around this time. If Rob thinks he can choose Jon, he would think he could choose Benjen. The other, and you have to buy Preston's other theory for this to work, is Dany. We know that Ned didn't tell Jon about his parentage or the Tower of Joy, but we don't know what secrets he did and didn't share with his trueborn heir, what secrets he knew they'd both take with them into their crypts. The trueborn son of the second son would come before the bastard daughter of the first son (trueborn or bastard, Dany, as in R+L=D), and probably before the bastard son of the first son (as in B+A=J). So there isn't huge fuckery on Ned's part as far as legitimate succession is concerned, plus any of Rob's future trueborn children of his would still be able to inherit. With everybody else otherwise disqualified from succession (vows, presumed death, marriage to Lannisters), Dany would be the only viable Stark heir. Add to that whatever rumors Rob may have heard about Dothraki hordes and magical dragons to wreck his enemies, and you've got yourself a stew goin'.

Just a point - Bran, Hodor, Osha and Meera were the ones who took the swords.
