Penwagon's story has some insanely good shot composition, holy moly. The way they use camera movement and center of frame to draw focus... Cinematography on point.

What I liked in Penwagon's is how it focuses on character. The older character is in an interesting conflict with being the one to assume responsibility for the other which we gather in dialogue, but they feel pressured and like they won't be able to do what they have to do in this harsh environment. The younger character is much more independent and confident and takes on the role of comforting the older one, but also fails to grasp the severity of the world around them. This sets up a good balance between them. One's strength will be the other's weakness, which sets up room for growth. The animation style and shot choices as well makes this come off very clear with things like the hand shaking, the expressions complimenting their personalities, and the final part of the scene being the two fire the gun together showing they work best as a team and will grow from each other i.e. the first gaining confidence and the second character grasping the reality of the situation.

Plus the character design was so appealing, and the character animation was so emotive! The expressions and the body language were just *chefs kiss.* Really made you feel connected to and invested in the characters.

Things i love about Penwagon’s animatic. 1. It shows the character relationship/dynamic. It’s so specific and done with clarity that you can imagine many situations with the duo in it. Also recently i just realized, how much depth character relationships can add to storytelling, by comparing 2 Valorant championship mvs, “Die for you” and “Fire again”. The storytelling in “Die for you” is so much more compelling than in “Fire again” imo. 2. It got clever humor. The way that girl just casually pulled out a shotgun and gestured towards the gory corpse. It’s fun. And I think the usage of camera movement when she said,” that guy.” really shows the casualness at the moment, then it instantly switches to the nervous character’s perspective on this situation, by showing the gory detail of the corpse in the front, and the nervous character’s expression in the back. Boom, Contrast. 3. The characters change in this 1 minute. The nervous one got bolder with encouragement from the girl. The girl comes from “keeps giving the nervous character more things to stress about”, to “provide the nervous one emotional support, and eventually defeating the anxiety”.
