The Pontiac Trans Am’s are one of the best looking cars ever, timeless. The 2nd generation TAs had extensive wind tunnel testing and the aerodynamic do work, the front air dam moves air around the car, the air extractors not only vent hot air from the engine compartment, they also keep air from building under the hood, the wheel spats move air around the negative air pressure in the wheel wells, the rear deck spoiler exerts 55lbs of downward force at 70 mph

One of my friends, Paul, had one of the 4 speeds. His stepfather bought it for him. His brother, Bill, had a black '78 Trans Am, also bought by the stepfather. Bill worked for a Pontiac dealership. I remember riding in Paul's car and the red instrumentation lighting was so cool. I great looking car indeed. As much as I wanted one just like it or at least a Trans Am, that type of car was a bit out of my price range. The insurance alone would have been prohibitive. In 1980, I bought my first new car, a Camaro Rally sport with a 4 speed and blue over blue paint and T roofs. The one odd thing about that car is it had Z28 badges on both doors. I always wondered about that. I had a good 6 years plus with that card before it was totaled. Breaks my heart to this day.

Always wanted this one. As a 16 year old kid I used to sit in one at the college by my house / it was donated by GM for the machine shop. I imagined how fun it would be to have one. My first trans am was a silver with white seats and red carpet, red dash 1977. Bought it new. My second trans am was a 79 black, black interior with the 403. I had ordered a blue 79 with the 400 4 speed, but Pontiac had several delays, I got impatient so I bought the 79 black with black interior. Eventually I painted it black with silver, using the anniversary graphics. Similar to the 1978 corvette pace car. To be honest, that color combination was actually prettier than the 10th anniversary. When the 10th anniversary came out, I bought one with the 400 4 speed. I’m a big fan of Pontiac’s and Pontiac engines, but truth be told, the Oldsmobile 403 was a much better engine, and ultimately made more power, with just a few mods. The Pontiac 400 was not as forgiving if you accidentally over raved it. It would spin a bearing, as one of my friends found out. One of the best old car pictures I have, is that of my 79 black silver parked next to the 10th anniversary. At the time no other car came close to the looks.

Out of 5600 1979 trans am with the 403 Oldsmobile engine and thm 3sp auto, there were 1500 trans am that used a 403 Oldsmobile engine with a 4sp manual same as the 400 big block, furthermore the 403 Oldsmobile engine was a 50 state emission control engine the 400 Pontiac engine could not pass a California air resources board emission test.
@thud97978 ай бұрын
This is incorrect. All Olds 403 cars were automatic only. There was never a 403 manual transmission anything in any car including Formula or Trans Am and Oldsmobile never drilled the crank to fit a manual transmission pilot bushing so it couldn't have happened even if Pontiac had wanted to.

I sold a few of them when they were new. I see it is a 403 Olds engine that came with the auto trans. 403 was used because of emissions. The 400 4 speed would not meet the new emissions. so the used just a few. The 400 Pontiac engines were 78 engines that Pontiac stock pilled for 79. I used to know the number of 400's that Pontiac stock piled.
@thud97978 ай бұрын
All 79 engines met Federal Emissions otherwise they couldn't have sold a single one. Now manual transmissions had a tougher time meeting California Emissions so that's why many performance V8 engines with manual transmission were not available in California and this was the case with the 79 Trans Am. All Trans Ams bound for California got the 403 Automatic period, you couldn't even get the 301 in California because it was not certified probably because of the low expected sales for that engine. On Corvette for example there was no manual transmission available in the Corvette in California for 5 years from 1976 through 1980. Definitely tough times to be a gearhead in California.

I used a 1970 pontiac 455 for the engine mildly modified, turbo 400 transmission and I used what I thought was the best options of every year firebird inside and out. The reason why Pontiac placed the olds engine in the trans am because your car is possibly a California car from van nuys plant the California trans am had the olds engine because the Pontiac 400 engine could not meet emissions like the 403 it was more compliant to the California Air standards at the time
@ClassicCarTraveler3 жыл бұрын
You are right about the California emissions, my car was sold new in Illinois
@thud9797Ай бұрын
The 4-speed cars put out more emissions than the automatics so that's why Pontiac chose to not go through the process on a low production combination. On every upshift is where the emissions spike and is why the manual V8s mostly disappeared from California in the mid 70's. The Corvette from 1976 through 1980 was base engine automatic only for all those years, in 1980 a 305/automatic was the only engine combination available. So for 79, Pontiac picked the 403 as the engine that would get the California certification and it was the only engine available. You couldn't even get the 301 in California in 79 as it did not go through the certification process.

Window controls in the center console so you don’t have to reach over to passenger window to roll it down, you must not drive much, lol

It’s nice but it’s not even close to the black ones with gold pinstripes and snowflakes rims. But this is definitely a nice Trans Am.

Thought the 78's front end looked better. Not all the rubber/plastic. Cool car though. Now if I had my dream Pontiac, it would be a 1973 Black GTO. Super rare car. Came out in my Sr year in high school.

Ho Jeff, you are so right about a 73 GTO!! I would love to have one!!

'67 GTO coolest looking Pontiac ever, '65 Catalina toughest looking car in automotive history. Probably the reason for the Olds engine in a lot of '79s is the fact that Pontiac only had a limited supply of W72 engines left over from '78 as they were no longer allowed to produce any more thanks to GM.

It is very sad that Pontiac installed the Olds 403 engine. It was my understanding they started doing that in the 1977 model year for units shipped to CA for emission purposes? Also, starting in 1975 model year Pontiac changed the speedometer from the 160 mph unit to a 100 mph unit. Another sad change. However, your 10th anniversary Trans Am is very cool and I would be very proud to have it in my corral of Trans Ams.

When you said it's got the GREAT Olds 403. Now I agree it's the prettiest. The Olds 403 if taken care of it can last for close to 1 million miles. I had a 1978 Buick Riv. 75 th Anniversary It was black and silver. And was very fast. It had at least 1 million miles. And the most Beautiful car ever. And so fun to drive. And I miss that car. My father blew a rod out the bottom. And he was supposed to fix it but the last time I saw it was in 2000. I really want to find one. But I have money problems. Meaning no money. I hope I can someday buy another one. Can you review one?

Prettiest Pontiac ever made? Pontiac had so many fantastic cars so there are endless models that can be best without discredit to yours so this comes down to each person's personal preference. However the 10th Anniversary Trans Am was very special in 1979. I was a young Pontiac salesmen at that time. When that car came into the dealership that was the first time I had experienced a car that was taking offers over window sticker. There was so little excitement in the new car world at that time it made this car special that someone not of that time can really understand today. At the time I am not sure I even understood that the automatic transmission cars used a Oldsmobile 403 motor. Pontiac had stopped production of the 400 motor prior to this time so their supply was limited by 1979. Also I am not sure that it made much difference to anyone at the time (except the real purist who would want a car like this with a 4-speed and/or someone who bought these cars purely as a present day investment like the 76 El Dorado convertible was) that the car came with a 403 motor. The Trans Am basically had no real performance competition after 1974. Add the Smokey and the Bandit cars and Pontiac ending the decade with this special car making the Trans Am one of the top cars if not the top car of the decade. I like many cars of the past (currently have a 74 Trans Am and a 55 Mercury Montclair Sun Valley (plexiglass roof) but Pontiac is my favorite brand of all. I have owned 15 Pontiacs and was devastated with GM dropped the car in 2010.

As far as TA interiors go, this is a close second to the '81 Recaro edition cars! Those Recaro seats were something else on the Daytona Pace TA's...the last of the Gen 2's. As far as why Pontiac put Olds engines into '79 TA's? Well that would be politics & GM. Pontiac's parent company's bean counters decided that consumers probably wouldn't care what went under the hood, especially since the government was pressing hard with emissions controls and Pontiac wasn't given a budget to be able to recertify their V8 engines to pass the new regulations. So there were actually no '79 Pontiac 400 engines made! The manual transmission TA's in '79 all got 1978 or earlier, leftover 400 engines, as GM told Pontiac in 1978 to stop making the 400's! So politics, government emissions, & GM killed all the joy. I believe that was the seed action that led to the demise of Pontiac in 2009. I also think the '70 to '73 birds had more aggressive front ends, but the '79 to '81 birds have prettier rear ends. But the prettiest Pontiacs? Probably 1966 Bonnevilles or Grand Prixs!
