That was the whole point. The scene shows a preteen essentially being thrown to the dogs. Lois Malle has set this up well and the black piano player - who could be expected to have seen some real pain and injustice inflicted in his time upon undeserving innocents really grounds the morality of the entire enterprise. It is intended to shock and it does IMHO. A great scene.

I love the lingering shot of the black servant as the men bid on Violet. He would have understood how she felt better than anyone else in the room. An object rather than a person to be respected. This would have been bad enough if it was only in a movie but poor Brooke was getting sold in real life too. She was horribly exploited by her parents, sold into sexual roles and was 11 and 12 and partying at Studio 54
@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think Brooke was "partying"- that stuff was just for publicity photos, keeping Brooke famous and in magazines etc. Teri Shields was a weird and disturbed woman. She seemed to relish pimping out Brooke - but only for photos and screen roles. Teri made sure Brooke was not in unsupervised contact with any men, or boys (Teri was always telling the world that Brooke was a virgin). Teri wasn't about to let anyone "spoil the merchandise" that Teri seemed to think belonged to her. Also, Teri was kind of old school strict, and made sure Brooke learned manners and spoke politely, went to a normal school, got good grades and did household chores. It turns out that Teri was an alcoholic, and was often out of it or depressed and in bed, at home so Brooke acted as a caretaker. Brooke, as a child/teen, was very responsible, sensible and mature and didn't get into any trouble - no alcohol or drugs or "partying" or DUIs. Brooke worked, was the breadwinner, and went to school. She only attended parties and events for publicity, for her career, and she was chaperoned. Teri didn't want anyone damaging Brooke's career or image. Their lifestyle was supported by Brooke working, and I think Teri enjoyed the fame and glitz as well as the money. No way Teri would have let anything damage that. In any case, Brooke was a sensible girl and felt she had to be responsible and take care of her mother.

She went to university and was a serious student. In old interviews from the 80s, Brooke waa a very polite and mature-sounding teen - no slang or swearing, good grammar and vocabulary, good manners. Child prostitution is a result of poverty. In poor countries parents have to sell their girls at an early age so that the boys and the rest of the family don't starve to death. If they're lucky, they're married off, if they're unlucky they get sold to a brothel. This is unimaginable to us, but even from the girl's perspective it is preferable to become a child prostitute than starve to death or see your family starve. To us, this unimaginable but people in real poverty face choices like that every day. I remember reading a book about the 1997 Asian financial crisis which was so bad that a lot of poor families had to sell their kids in places like Thailand and Indonesia. Even the American author who interviewed these people had to stop and think what he would do in their place. Would he sacrifice one of his girls and sell her into prostitution to save his other children? We should be thankful we don't have to make those choices, but this is the reality for a big chunk of humanity even today.

Linda B You have obviously never lived in a third world country. I have. Life isn't always that simple and people have to make really hard choices, that we can't even imagine. I am not protecting their moral decisions, simply pointing out that since we don't have to face those choices, it is sanctimonious and presumptuous of us to take the moral high ground and assume that we would make better choices in the same situation. Everybody assumes that they would be real heroes if they got into a situation like that. Reality shows that most people take the easy way out, the path of least resistance in crisis situations and only a very small minority act selflessly. Sometimes there just aren't any good choices and you have to choose the least bad one. For instance I've talked to some of the survivors of the anti-chinese pogroms in Indonesia. The Indigenous locals went on a witch-hunt, hunting down the chinese from house to house. In some cases the families were spared if the father or the brother agreed to rape their daughter/sister for the amusement of the savages. So what would you do in a situation like that? If the decision is to rape your daughter or your sister so that you can save the whole family, including her, or let everyone die?

***** ah yes, women in third world countries get to choose who they marry and whether they have children. It's not like they're forced into an arranged marriage and get raped by their husbands if they refuse sex, is it? And instead of eating, the money they would have spent on food can always go to contraceptives, right? And it's not like their own families or their husbands would murder them if they found out, right? Just count yourself lucky you don't know what life is like for these women. My point is that people in poverty have no choice. They cannot exercise their free will, choices get made for them whether they like it or not.

I remember seeing this for the first time at about 16. While I believe the same message could have been sent with an older legal aged female playing the role I remember realizing that the movie is about a girl growing up in a whorehouse and wanting to be like the women around her, feeling like she should be as they are. Having a terrible mother who allowed her to pursue as she wanted she grew up too quickly. While she should have bee. Playing with dolls instead she was aware of the desires of old horrible men. She was a grown woman sadly at o ly 12/13 yrs old. The movie's intention was to make you uncomfortable (im not going to stick up for that disgusting playboy shoot) but at the end of the movie you really felt for her. She was shoved back into a childhood she was meant to live but had seen too much and it was tragic. When this was made, majority of people were unaware that anyone alive in the God-fearing advanced time could be so sick as they were THEN. But sadly we all know better now. Effective movie, should have used am older actress. Poor Brooke even said in an interview that she would never allow her children to do this.

This story took place in 1917, in New Orleans. Yet here we are, 104 years later, and stuff like this--and worse---is STILL taking place every day, in places such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Thailand, Nigeria, and many other countries. Constantly.

This movie is dead wrong! Brooke Sheilds's mother is dead now but when she was alive she was dead wrong! And this was the 70s. This fulfils too many of Jimmy Savile, Gary Glitter, Ian Watkins and R. Kelly's wishes!

I’m the first person that is against cancel culture however, in these cases I think this movie should be banned. It’s so exploitative and glamorizes p**ophilia. It’s disappointing how Brooke Shields has never spoken out against it either.

Brooke Shields was always a highly intelligent person even at this age very smart little girl. It's funny I keep saying what do you guys think about Jodie Foster's situation. She played a prostitute in the movie Taxi driver. Just listen to some of that dialogue.

I was only 14 when this movie cane out. So I wasn't paying much attention to it. It looked boring to a teenager in the 80s. Today I look at it and think, the people who exploited this young girl need to be put in prison for a very long time. We must protect our children. At all costs.

I checked, she was just 12 by then. This is child's exploitation nowadays and ever, but apparently it wasn't seen as an uncomfortable situation, at least not by her parents who must have given their consent. Today those who play that kind of role are over 18 but with baby faces, which I think is the acceptable way. If we also looked at the blue lagoon movie, she was still a minor. I wouldn't expose a child to that environment fictional or not.This scene is really disgusting to watch

The subject material is SUPPOSED to be disturbing, Louis Malle wasn’t romanticizing anything, just because it looks pretty doesn’t mean it was. There’s nothing actually pornographic about the movie, everything is suggested and it’s meant to highlight a sad, important period of time in U.S. history, stuff like this actually happened and it’s still happening.
