There were no social support systems back then -- Violet had 2 choices -- be auctioned off or starve in the street. So, sometimes they laugh about things in the house because it's become your regular work day. Those women are the only friends she's had. She gets food, shelter, and an element of protection there. Its sad that the youth today want everything censored - You don't learn anything if you remove unpleasant realities, or history - it will be taboo and in some cases, forgotten instead. When this movie came out, the subject of child prostitution was taboo - and let me remind you that child pornography was LEGAL until the 80's. - Back then people knew it existed but no one took a stand against it because it was easier to turn a blind eye. Movies like this brought more attention and coverage than you'd imagine. It wasn't made for pedophiles, it was made to provoke and get a debate going. The discussion of children and sexuality came into debate - and yes you have to discuss things like that to learn what is appropriate and what is not, thats how the laws of today were formed. Lastly, you might say being naked traumatised her, but no child feels sexual by being naked - adults are the ones who pervert it. .. Its sad that today most parents don't even want to bathe their own children if they are of the opposite sex, because society has made something beautiful and innocent into something disgusting and perverted. Glad I am not from this generation..

The straw which broke the camel’s back for Teri’s emotional state was all the criticism she had received for letting and allowing her own daughter be part of the controversial film, Pretty Baby. When she was only 11 years old, Brooke was cast in the 1978 film and was part of some very questionable scenes. This caused a lot negative attention and the reviews were contradicting. Seeing a minor play in such a film was definitely groundbreaking for the industry, however, it was also perceived as completely inappropriate. Teri’s motherly and management skills were starting to be questioned.

Came across this because KZbin’s recommendations algorithm is weird af but you know, through all this horrifying scene that almost made me spill my guts, I see the actress that is trying to cover up the body of a child she knows shouldn’t star in this movie. You can tell that beyond her act she is really sorry for this little girl and try to give her a little decency and confort 💔

My two cents: I think that this is a brutal film to watch, and the way they went about filming it was all wrong even if the subject matter is one that is topical. Brooke Shields is just too young. She would have been just a whisker shy of 12 when they were shooting this and stupidly nobody considered that this could damage her. It is equally stupid of them to not realize that this is the kind of film that pedophiles have, their version of a light appetizer to the really sick and illegal (at least in the USA) stuff. This is not the kind of role she should be playing: something like the Bad News Bears would have been a better fit! Now, could it be filmed today? Yes. Before anybody jumps down my throat, there is a way to film this with *MUCH* greater care. I speak from a technical perspective!! First, the age of the actress: *FOURTEEN GOING ON FIFTEEN*. Not a day younger. And only for certain shots in particular: close ups, instances where she has to be clothed, and the big dramatic scenes. The rest of the time, she's got a body double who is about twenty, diminutive, very skinny, and does not mind CG editing of her body to make her look even younger. (They did something similar when they did a remake of Lolita with Jeremy Irons.) Second, Louis Malle focuses too much and rather creepily on what makes Violet a pretty baby and not enough on what makes her a victim. A smart way to draw away from that is to, ermm, show more graphically what kind of environment Violet is in. That means a lot more naked adults and outside shots of what Storyville was actually like: a trap for women who knew no other trade. It would change the tone just enough. And it would require naked ass Violet to appear less for the sake of time. Last, make sure the actress playing Violet is not on set when she does not have to be. (Hollywood already does this for the girl who plays Lyanna Mormont.)
@sparkreno196 жыл бұрын
i dunno. with all the body doubles, CGI effects, etc...I feel like those techniques take away from the message the movie is conveying: that child prostitution and pornography are inherently harmful to the children in question. When I watch this movie, I see Violet being sold as a prostitute, selling her virginity to the highest bidder - and in this scene, I see part of her has died on the inside. There's no body double, no CGI effects, just her. There's no bullshit to it. The fact that it was all brooke in this movie emphasizes that this is a very real and very painful issue that happens to thousands of children to this very day. People like to sweep under the rug the practice - a taboo, never to be discussed but one that many adults have their hands in and profit from. I feel that CGI would cheapen and mask the overall horror this movie conveys. Granted, this movie was made in the late 70s, where such technology was not available, but stil
@marykatherinegoode27736 жыл бұрын
sparkreno19 Maybe, but consider that you can't convey that such practices are damaging when you yourself might fall down the slope of doing exactly what the bad guys do. A scene like the auction could easily be done without a single camera trick. It is a dramatic component of the film. I am thinking of something else. You could elaborate on a scene where Violet is taken upstairs with a man who is clearly a freak. That is when the clothes would come off, and the director would scream, "FREEZE!" The 20 year old double could get in position while the younger actress goes off the set to do her homework and does not return for most of the day. The undressing never went beyond her removing a sash. The rest of the scene is more graphic and unsuitable.

The grotesque horror of this film is that it is about the same thing that was being done to Brooke Shields in real life. Prostituted for money by her mother. The public violation in film is as bad as or even worse than physical abuse.

Brooke Shields herself has said in a recent interview she looked back at this film with good memories. She loved the sets, the actors and the director. Just the press afterwards and the upheaval wasn't a nice memory. Anyway, it's a beautiful movie that showed what really happened back in the early 20th century in southern US. Other morales then.

It isn't a beautiful movie, it's a disgusting movie that sexually exploited a child. Brooke Shields is literally brainwashed (probably from trauma that she obtained from being sexualized and used since she was a little girl)

I think it's all about portrayal. A lot of real life events are acted out all the time, kidnappings, murders, some of which included children. It's a sad reality we are living in. Maybe it's good there's a movie about it so more people will know what happens with these kids. Some of the films purpose is to make you feel disgusted and disturbed. Even books like to kill a mockingbird. It's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.

How can a girl so young be exploited in a way that could possibly take her innocence in the process. A young girl given a role where she had no business being apart of, being put on a movie screen to be explioted and sexualised by grown men or women. Can't imagine what the young girl would have to deal with growing up in this industry and what people would "expect" from her.
