Sasha was the first celebrity that I knew who spoke about her PCOS around the time I got my diagnosis, and I can't explain how disheartening it was to see people, "fans" turn their backs on her the moment she gained weight. But like you point out, we all watched a show that taught us the dream story of Hanna. Looking back, it's no surprise at all. It's even sadder that her spin-off didn't work, she's just as talented as she was back in 2011, yet you don't see her around. :/

It was so weird how they treated mental illnesses like hanna's bulimia or spencer's adiction, they were there for two or three episodes while it was convenient and then they would disappear for entire seasons until it was relevant to the plot again, i was always so confused

Someone in a video research mentioned TV shows being longer back then because of network requirements, and while it doesnt excuse exploiting such topics, it kinda explains why they were there for such a short time

I HATED that they watered down Alison's character. She was such a perfect scary villain, and if you know about the books, she is revealed to be the main villain AND SHE EVEN GAINED WEIGHT in the end. And she still was the scary villain. They could have pulled it off, but they did not and it's very saddening.

This is so interesting. Ashley Marin was always the most comfortable mom for me but it’s because she’s similar to mine, especially the food and weight stuff. My mom, however, was actively fighting generations of eating disorders. She regularly told my brother and I she loved us no matter what. But the trauma did continue. And I never really thought about this show and weight before.

Loved this video!! What they did to Alison’s character in the later seasons was so disappointing. They took away all of her smoke and I knew it had to do with her body, but I didn’t understand at the time the power dichotomy. She couldn’t have been a bully once she gained weight bc the responses would always be “but you’re fat.” Such a good point. I’m saving this video bc it gave me a lottttt to think about!! It's insane because watching PLL as a plus sized teenager, the food/body stuff always icked me in a way I couldn't explain but you articulated it perfectly. The way media can shape our relationships with ourselves can be such a double edged sword. Anyway, amazing video! I loved hearing your thoughts!

Sasha is a TOP TIER actress! The way she played Allison at 12 was the perfect mix of weaponized privilege, beauty, and manipulation of friendship and popularity. Literally what middle school/high school mean girls feel like. How they had so much popularity, they could snap you. Sasha forever changed my view of beauty standards and who benefits when I saw an audition video she did. The scene was of her trying to enter this assignment but being sneered at that her beauty is the only reason she got to where she is. Sasha’s reaction to being dismissed to this day makes me in awe. Everyone should see this video.

I always felt like how the show handled ed or mental illness was so damaging. The problems are only present when it's convenient. The actress that plays Spencer, Troian suffers from anorexia. And they completely butchered Alison's character after the actress, Sasha gained weight. Alison became this boring passive person that did nothing and dressed like an elementary school teacher. It was so irritating.

Maybe it’s the caffeine but I legit became anxious at some points during this video because I was taken back to my feelings of inferiority regarding my body. Especially when you discuss the study of maternal relationships with their bodies and the relation to how that effects their kids. I have always felt like it's impossible for anyone to be attracted to me because i have never seen any body like mine represented in the media. I think the point of PLL was bullying, blackmailing and making everyone feel miserable in order to control them , make them do horrible things aka whatever A wanted. I do agree a lot this was terrible and wasn’t written well, there was a lot they could have done better. Also growing back then in the 00’s I remember they didn’t have sizes beyond 9. In my local area there was THE place to shop at in the mall and it was called 5.7.9. which was referring to they only went up to size 9 and that it was catered to those sizes. Everyone loved something there, they had the best clothes, pretty unique standout pieces. I struggled to buy anything there. I also remember while I was in HS during that y2k era there was no poc girls like me, very few of us, and all the girls were white and thinner than me, at the time I was in between sizes 9-14 and I always felt like I was fat bc the girls around me 1) weren’t Latina 2) thy were much smaller than me. also I remember it was during the toxic era of Victoria’s Secret. A study should be done how it dominated and affected us... I remember it’s all anyone talked about in school. Victoria’s Secret/ Hollister/ Abercrombie & Finch. There was just too much toxicity and negativity everywhere idk how any of us are okay. There was a lot of toxicity in the 00s that I think the older generations put onto us. which is why I’m happier there’s more positivity , awareness, discussions and just a looking back on things and realizing how terrible it was.
@moeblackx

I couldn't eat properly for 15 years for medical reasons, this year I finally can and I am STRUGGLING with the weight gain, even though I understand I was technically anorexic before. I never felt thin enough then, so now? What a mess. My mum gained 3 kilos this year because she tore a ligament super badly and could barely walk for 6 months, and keeps telling me how fat she is. I remember when I was younger I never really noticed how the mean girl beauty standard worked, but then as I got older and took an interest in the world war 2 books my dad and grandad had, I actually started to get resentful and angry. If you see the propaganda cartoons for eugenics back then literally all of the women considered marriageable, all have the same features that season 1 and 2 Alison Dilaurentis has, or the same features as Regina George or Serena Van Der Woodsen. And it pissed me off, this was the 200s or 2010s, why was this still being endorsed!? That's why I enjoy Maddy Perez so much, it's not perfect but it is at least a step in a hopeful direction.

Hanna’s ED is kind of weird. Half the time she’s portrayed as getting over it/ still suffering from it and how it affected her. The other time she’s just eating what ever she wants. That would be fine as a way to explore her unhealthy relationship with food, but it’s never treated as such. Just Hanna being Hungry Hanna.

Honestly I personally wouldn’t have had an issue with it if they didn’t start trying to be so morally superior during season 5,6 and 7. Personally from me teen films in teen drama shows have always broken boundaries and says some edgy risky things. But that being said you were never meant to see these characters as these gods that could do no wrong they were flawed they weren’t perfect in the world that they were and never existed to make them feel like their behavior was justified. I guess that’s a reason why I prefer shows from back then The teen shows made today

I really have to disagree with your take on Ashley Marin as someone who watches this show yearly at least I found her and Hanna had the closest mother and daughter relationship they weren’t perfect but they got each other and never took out any anger onto each other about their flaws. I believe that Hanna’s eating disorder has less to do with the relationship between her and her mother and wayyy more to do with her friendship with Alison who always made her insecure and fostered her disorder, her friendship with the other girls who are naturally skinny and achievers, Aria has always been seen as “pretty” and unique, spencer was this straight A student and Emily was an athlete. She never thought she was smart pretty or as talented as the rest of the group. Also I’m not sure if her father leaving motivated her to lose the weight or Alison’s disappearance but we never see Ashley being the one to encourage Hanna to lose it or make a comment about her previous weight. The ‘judgemental’ looks from Ashley that apparently cause hanna to binge are almost none existent? Hanna has turned to food only after something to do with Alison’s disappearance or A stress. Also, I’m really shocked that you spent more time covering Ashley than you did with Alison’s character change after her weight gain which was such a huge part of the failure of the later seasons of the show… I almost forgot the scene with the pig cupcakes you claim is Hanna getting rewarded which I don’t understand? That scene is incredibly uncomfortable to watch and shows that regardless of whether she loses the weight A still has the power to make her feel just like she did when she was “Hefty Hanna” which is common some people even after they lose the weight can’t disassociate themselves from who they used to be and A was shoving that down her throat. Pun intended
