that's the corner point if Sweeney that makes him more scary. He thinks that if he kills the right people, everything can go back to normal. Even in the penny horror originals or the more Grounded BBC version where he was abused by his father he kills in hopes of maintaining normalcy.

I agree with most people on how George Hearn's acting is wonderful, when he sobs in remembering Lucy and so on but not enough appreciation that his whistling is phenomenal!

I love this version of Judge Turpin. You can really tell how he is a truly cruel human being without even having to watch him at it. I’m very surprised, and happily so. I don’t understand why this version does not get nearly so much credit as is due. Or at least, that is my opinion. I’d love to hear someone else’s thought on the matter.

This version is the penultimate version of Sweeny Todd, IMO. I fell in love with it long before the movie was released. Though Johnny Depp, Helena, and Alan Rickman are all talented and charismatic actors in their own rights, none of them have the vocal talents that are required to perform this American opera well. They are horridly miscast for the movie, much like most were miscast for the movie version of Les Mis. I find it so strange that one would think to film a movie version on a musical or opera, and lean into casting known actors for the boxoffice $$$, but create a far inferior version of a musical that way. There are plenty of Broadway actors who CAN sing, dance, and act, AND the movie would be a credit to the stage version. I am hoping for better from Spielberg, when he releases his "West Side Story" at Christmas. The only known actor will be Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) but he actually is a singer and musician, so it isn't a stretch. Burton is well known for nepotism though, but Johnny was way too young for the part, Helena too.

This is my favourite version of Sweeney Todd, it always has been and the WHOLE Musical used to be up on KZbin in a single video and I'd watched it so many times. I was heartbroken when it was taken down and then all of the best parts, such as A Little Priest, were taken down from KZbin. I'm happy more and more people are finding out about it and are realizing how great it is.

George Hearn is so perfect on this song. That break in his voice @2:40 is just...ugh. That well of emotion embodies the role of Sweeny Todd. Its not just crazy throat slits, there's a well of grief in him and throughout the musical that, in my opinion, only Hearn ever really tapped into.
@LAsQuoteGirl3 жыл бұрын
George Hearn makes #1 on my list. Because of his acting, singing, and then his performance at the end when Sweeney Todd finds out that the beggar woman was his wife. His character showed a lot more emotion and remorse in that scene.
@onlookerofthings60293 жыл бұрын
I like Michael Ball best personally. He's a great actor, his voice is amazing, and he plays off Imelda Staunton so well. They really feel like a duo deranged enough to sing while turning people into pies. He sells being broken when Sweeney finds out he killed his wife instead of shock and regret like George but I will never forgive myself if I don't say I love them both.
@davidrosen93462 жыл бұрын
I agree, Hearn is my favorite, but I had the pleasure of seeing ST on opening night on Broadway, ages ago with the original Sweeney, Len Cariou. He was pretty brilliant himself. George Hearn had a bit of a better voice, more commanding, and he was just a bit more crazed than Cariou played, but you all should listen to the orginal Bway cast album, Cariou does a pretty great job.

@ Honest answer - quit besmirching the word ‘gay.’ It’s ‘homosexual.’
@LunarShimmerАй бұрын
@@ZephaniahL Dude, I was literally just saying that the emotion and expression in George's voice when he says that is really good. I said nothing about Sondheim's sexuality, which is a non-issue in regards to this song. Clearly you are part of the minority here with this opinion, because everyone I talk to, who watches Sondheim, talks about him, plays in revivals of his productions, has no problem with this, and agrees with me that it is possible for - however you want to put it - a man who enjoys the company of another man to be capable of seeing a woman and thinking "oh, she's pretty". You don't have to have a sexual attraction to her. You are the one who brought this entire issue up. I made an innocent comment about how much I love _the actor_ playing Sweeney here, saying absolutely nothing about Sondheim's inclinations. I find it offensive, as a queer person myself, that you are seeming to insinuate that I do not understand what I am talking about here. Gay, homosexual, it doesn't matter, he liked men. The term does not matter. Gay is more casual, yes, but solely saying "homosexual" when referring to these matters, and demanding that _I_ do as well, despite my different life experiences than you and different opinions of things altogether, makes you come off as abrasive and opinionated. I will not be giving you advice or anything like that. I have much better things to do with my time, but Sondheim is one of my greatest passions currently, and I refuse to accept this kind of comment on _my_ comment that I made completely separately from what you brought up, 2 entire years ago, back in 2022. But you decided to post on my comment, for literally no reason that I can tell, that Sondheim didn't know what a pretty woman was. Did you know he did the music for West Side Story? Have you heard of "I Feel Pretty", sung by Maria? Yeah, I'm not going to waste any more time on you. I hope this comment made you think a little. I'm not going to reply to you if you bother to reply to this. I'm just going to be laughing at you in silence, so do it at your own risk, I guess.
