💚“It begs the question, how can you win an award for Plant of the Year if the scale is not yet there, and you’re not yet an expert at growing this plant? And, you also weren’t the one to create it?” This says it all, and baffles me. Excellent research Chris. Very interesting history behind the cultivation, and spread of this plant. Can’t imagine calling it a “Cheesecake Monstera”!

What Costa Farms did was a great idea, badly executed. Bringing these absurd prices down so everybody can have one, while still making a ton of money on it seems like a win/ win. It just baffles me that they announced everything before they even knew if they could do it, keeping hopes and expectations sky high.

I always thought that the thai constellation came from a tissue culture batch of monstera around 2018, not that it had existed many years ago, and was a natural mutation. The amount of research you did to find this out is amazing!

I know thai constellation has root rot issues, but i got one anyways as a TC recently. Its in perlite, orchid bark, pumice, and some regular soil, its even more free draining than what i mix for all my cactus. Once it matures enough to transplant from my dinky plastic cup, its also gonna be set in a terracotta planter to really add a preventative measure. So far ive got 1 new leaf with no problems, but only time will tell if it makes it.

Oh wow. Nature-made! So Costa likely didn't make enough plants to cause the entire root rot issue? It's seemed like that rot issue really did reach its peak at around 2021. It still doesn't seem like Costa really did anything wrong. They just failed in mass producing a plant. I assume that's the nature of their business. My thai that I've grown from an acclimated tc in moss is the most robust plant that I have (rivals my dioscorea discolor lol), and it's roots are insane. They busted through a screen in the pot days after a repot. 😆 is the rot issue behind us? New thais are better? I dunno.

Good video. I do have to point out people complain that something sells out fast because the info leaked, and then others complain when they didn't know Walmart was selling them. My local nursery has TC for $109. They have not been selling, 3 out of 12 in the past couple months. They are getting bigger though lol. Personally, I think the Albo is just a better looking plant, and cheaper!

Apparently a lot of bad batches have come out. Even in Australia the Thais you used to get where really hardy and now they have so many problems with a rot fungus that's actually a common problem with hemp growers. I have had to resort to water growing mine because the second they're in soil they immediately start to die. TC can make rare plants more accessible sure, but when you're growing things sterile any germ they haven't encountered will easily kill the plant once it's no longer in that environment and Thais aren't that hardy a plant anymore.

Ive lived in Colombia for many years and i remember seeing them growing in the rainforests of Antioquia before they were famous, thai albo and golden. Once they started to get popular i was shocked to find that they where quite expensive plants. I remember seeing one in medellin growing beside of a road in the middle of the city and each 6 months it got prunned by the government. I always regret not taking cuttings. I didnt know back then it was a rare plant

So I have been seeing a bunch of Thai babies lately. I got my large Thai right before the "plant-demic" from someone who bought an enormous one, chopped it up to sell as cuttings, and basically discarded the base and root structure (I got the base, and root structure, and it is awesome!). Lately, I have been feeling a little, down on the plant since I have started to see them in big box stores for 80-100, and more and more at farmers markets.. but... :-D after watching this, I am happier now. :-D

I have seen many many people who have the none tissue cultured plants and a tissue cultured plant say there is a huge difference. The none tussue grows with less internodal spacing, doesn't have root rot issues for them, and grows faster. The tissue cultured are the opposite. It seems like for whatever reason that specific plant doesn't do will tissue cultured, or at least not the exact way people have been doing it. (I am only talking about Tai Constalation. Most plants seem to be perfectly fine tissue cultured.)

Never. Not once have problems with that. No thrips. Every plant has thrips. No root rot. Earth to leca. No problem. Cuttings without leaf without root. No problem. That is a hulk! My brother had a Monstera Deliciosa I had grown from seed that was 4-5 years old growing on the side of a Live Oak in Central Florida that put off a variegated side shoot. It had grown for over a year and was stable. Then a hard freeze came and killed it and the original down to the ground. I know because I have seen, any Monstera CAN produce a new, unique variegation.
