Who would've thought it was _Sally from the book club/Bob the school caretaker/Simon's mum_ !". It's just a trope. Just a more specific play on the "main character has interest/skill, unknown/mysterious person comes along and beats them at that interest/skill, then simultaneously searches for who they are and improves their skills until they beat _and/or_ snog the mysterious person".
