My husband and I moved into our forever home last November. He has Alzheimer’s so wasn’t able to help at all in the move, I had the moving and purchasing of new items and all maintenance on my shoulders. Fortunately I’m very mechanical and have been able to figure things out on my own. Almost 9 months later I am almost finished with all of the maintenance items and decorating. It has been a lot of hard work but it’s been a lot of fun and very gratifying to see it all come together.

After 35 years in Florida, I can relate! Welcome to the south as far as lack of customer service and your property management. From my lawn care to most other home projects requiring assistance, I have found most people to be undependable and not reliable. I wait eagerly each week for the updates on this life adventure you have embarked on. So much fun taking the journey with you, like watching a best friend! You have made so many great friends in such a short time which is a testament to what a genuine and beautiful person you are. I would suggest for the problem areas in your yard, the weedy areas where you want garden beds, that you use the no dig method. It will choke out the weeds and improve your soil at the same time. Use 5-6 layers of newspaper or cardboard which you have in great supply now.! Trim the weeds as short as possible, lay down the cardboard, wet it well and cover with several inches of dirt/compost and several inches of mulch. The cardboard will break down and improve soil while choking out the weeds. Even if you don’t plant right away it will look neat and tidy. Continue to water occasionally even if there are no plants to assist with the composting of the cardboard. When you do plant, just move the soil and compost to the side, cut a hole in the cardboard the size of you pot, plant and move the soil and compost back. Ta da…. beautiful no weed garden beds and all of that cardboard put to a great use.

Another great video! I so agree with you about the trains. Having lived in NYC for so many years, I grew to love the sound of trains. After Hurricane Sandy, they weren't running for awhile and when I heard the first train after the storm, I felt such relief. I knew everything was going to be alright. When I moved to my house in Florida, I figured I'd never have the comforting sound of trains again, but lo and behold, there is a freight train track behind my development and I hear them on Thursdays and Saturdays. I love it. I'm sorry you are having such difficulty with the property management. I was a renter my entire adult life until I bought my first house in Florida (at age 60!) and I've always been fortunate with landlords and property management, but it seems in the last few years the attention to detail and quality and care of management has gone down significantly. My daughter and son and law rented an apartment in Tulsa last year that had so many problems, they were on the phone with the company every day for several months! I hope your issues get resolved soon. Enjoy your new comfy bed!

Those pipes you removed…I think I recall you saying something about planting a garden against the fence? I’ve done that same thing! I bought hooks to hang over the top of the fence, I used conduit pipes to string a netting trellis across those hooks that hold the pipes up with the netting hanging from it. I had tomatoes grow over my head! A little one row garden supplied me with tomatoes to last a year! Froze them. Also had cucumbers and they grew right up the netting! Got the netting on Amazon and this is my 2nd year with it so it lasts. The one I bought is called AlpineReach trellis netting and I see it’s no longer available but I do see alternatives. Wish I could send you pictures. I’m 65 so I’m telling you. My little fence row garden was the best way to go for women our age. Much easier to care for and keep up.

Girl you are really working hard! It’s going to be so beautiful when your done. I have a suggestion for weed barrier, card board boxes. You break down the card board boxes and lay them in the garden around the plants and cover with mulch. The card board breaks down over time, the worms love the card board, they eat the card board and poop so you have plenty of worm poop which is great for your garden. It’s a great way to get rid of all your card board boxes and it’s good for your soil!

Woo hoo! You are amazing. When I saw Ryan drive up with that load of soil, I thought, "what! Is she going to spread that out all by herself?" I know how hard that is because my hubby and I have done it over our whole back and front yards. I'm really enjoying you taking us along on your new home journey. All your hard work is going to be well worth the effort. Isn't that SPCA shop amazing? I love all the wonderful things in it. Enjoy your lunch and dinner. I'll check back later to see what else you're building.

OMG! Miss Kim! I can't believe you! You've motivated me to go clean up summer annuals in my pots.
