HAPPY DECEMBER 1ST EVERYONE!!! Instead of participating in Vlogmas this year, i'll be dedicating all my December uploads to THRIFTMAS! I'll be posting daily vlogs in the lead up to Christmas, and i'll only be posting about THRIFT SHOPPING!!! Videos like.... Thrift flip, thrift haul, thrift with me, thrift makeover, thrift store challenge, Christmas thrift, anything and everything I can think of to get into the holiday spirit while keeping costs low and keeping my consumption sustainable!
I'm starting off Thriftmas with a bang by visiting 12 thrift stores in 2 days - I picked up a wide range of homewares, including vintage items, quirky and unique finds, boring things to flip and a bunch of pastel items too! For anyone looking to visit the stores in todays video, these are the locations:

@sassmacfru
@sassmacfru 3 жыл бұрын
Update.. when you picked up the sprinkle vases, I could see that you are aware of what I said below. One thing you need to remember when going to a thrift store. Sometimes the things have been donated by adult children of someone who has passed or going into a home. They don’t know the real value of what they are donating and the workers at the stores don’t always know either. Some of your finds are actually worth a LOT more than what you paid for and flipping them will decrease the value. Some of the glassware you have is crystal. That being said, they are yours now and you can do what you want.

Banded calcite is often confused for banded onyx, sardonyx (which is actually onyx) is also banded and is similar colors...doesn't help that most sellers (crystal or homeware) insist on calling is "banded onyx" when it's not an onyx. @cheerfulcaptain5077

"Made in china" means made with unethical labor (majority of the time) because of China's slack labor laws and worker welfare. It can be good quality but it doesn't change that the person that made it most likely didn't profit enough for it. Buying these things through thrifting makes it okay since it isn't giving anymore money to the shitty company.
@hannahthekiwi

I think using ‘made in China’ as a stand in for all mass produced and unethically made products contributes to racist stereotypes and places all the blame on the nations who produce the items without holding accountable the nations who buy the products and perpetuate these systems. Also it seems like here she doesn’t want to buy things made i China because she thinks they are cheap and potentially poorly made, not because they are made unethically. Instead of rejecting anything made in China (but not other items that are mass produced elsewhere) I think it’s more useful to shop ethically/sustainably more generally like thrifting...

Honey, you need to research your styles of decor, the plastic tumblers with squiggles are vintage 80’s all the way. The iridescent lavender vase is called luster ware. Vintage luster ware is very collectible. The mottled purple glass is Murano glass from Italy. It is made on the island of Murano. For the shelf, put a primer on it or the paint will just peel off the vinyl veneer. You got some great finds! The Murano stuff is fabulous!

To help you decide on whether to paint the glass wear you can fill them with water and food colouring of your choice and see how they look. You may find you decide to keep them like that and have the option of having them clear or change the colour as and when you feel like it all by just washing them out :)

Hello! i'm a diyer, and have learned quite alot about "flipping", most of it the hard way! 1) use a matte clear coat, this can also be found from rustoleum i prefer minwax if you have that in Australia. If you don't when cleaning the painted items the paint will come off slightly as most cleaners have chemicals that will take off the paint. 2) Yes, you can sand the veneer. in fact, it is very important that you do. otherwise the paint will run, no matter how lightly you do it. In fact you should imo be sanding just about anything you paint. and light grit sandpaper is all you need. just something to give the paint to grab hold of. 3) on the end tables, you don't need to strip them. simply sand them down with say a med grit sand paper to get the all of the gloss or wax off, then again with a low grit to smooth it out. then give it 1-2 coats of a good base coat of white. if using rustoleum you may want to do 3, but use your own judgement. this base coat will stop the "bleeding" through of any stain. now you can paint with any color you want too. this avoids have to use the harsh chemicals of a stripper. And you will find that most "vintage" truly vintage pieces used a veneer. even on great pieces of wood. If these are mdf pieces which are and were popular a stripper will destroy that wood. in shich case you don't want to use a stripper either.. I wish you the best of luck!

The goblets are onyx marble. Its common in Pakistan. Every household has some shape or form of these pieces. Growing up I had one as a big swan and little rabbit, turtle etc. We also had a chess set made of this stone. You can find these in the marketplace. They come in all shapes and sizes, from a small jewelry box to a side table. Most of what I've seen is hand crafted. And even ones with floral design embedded in the stone. You’ll also see some buildings with this onyx marble flooring. It's a treasure.

One great way to use cute cups/glasses is to turn them into candles! For my wedding, I made like 30 candles by going to goodwill, buying small glass cups, & melting down wax blocks. I only did unscented white wax because they were just for adding some warm lighting to the tables, but I’ve also made a cute Christmas candle by melting down a cheap scented, colored candle from the dollar store, hot gluing a wick to the bottom, & pouring the cheap candles into the glass!
