I am finally done with Xenoblade Chronicles! I will (probably) return with videos on Xenoblade Chronicles X sometime in the future, but I need a good long break from the series for a bit. Thankfully I already finished the next big game I'm going to cover and have begun work on those videos, with the final one being my 100th video I've made. 😊 Entries in this series will be a bit sparse, but I like talking about RPGs and I thought it'd be fun to rank them all and see how they compare. It'll be interesting to look back in like 5 years if I keep making these videos and see where Xenoblade Chronicles stands.

Please skip X and do 2. X is awesome, but it does NOT connect to 1, it is NOT meant to be played as a sequel to, it does NOT expand on the themes of 1 in a direct way, and it does NOT carry over any importance to the saga overall. It is meant to be standalone or a spinoff. Then again, I cannot tell you what to do, and X means a lot to a lot of people. The thing is, I am thinking about the prospect of how these videos you’re making will work as a saga themselves. X wouldn’t fit. It isn’t part of the Klaus story. It doesn’t evolve as much from 1 (gameplay wise) as 2 did.

X is great, even better than XC:DE in a lot of ways. But I think you should wait for the sure coming of the Xenoblade X remake on the next Nintendo console. Meanwhile you might want to play XC2 or maybe 3.

I first played Xenoblade Chronicles when I was 14 or so and it absolutely blew me away. I had never played a game with such a big world or a story I got this invested in. The combat takes some getting used to, but it feels amazing to use all the broken arts you have to defeat high-level enemies. I can see Xenoblade 1 is not perfect, but it still remains my favourite rpg. Possibly even my favourite game of all time.
@PretzelYT5 ай бұрын
That's kinda my goal with this series, I wanna better state that in my next one of these. A piece of media can have a lot of flaws but still be someone's favorite. I think looking at games from that perspective is more interesting, rather than trying to OBJECTIVELY find the game with the least amount of flaws to officially declare what is the "perfect" RPG. Xenoblade Chronicles vibed with you really well, but it might not have with someone else. I like thinking about how games resonate with the individual, rather than the collective.

It remains one of my favorite games of all time. The whole series is phenomenal, and the sequels are well worth playing in their own right. But if you found the combat dull and sidequests tedious, then this type of game obviously isn't for you. It takes a certain mindset to really get into the flow of Xenoblade like I did, I used to love just putting on a video in the background and letting loose while exploring and doing all the quests. Not everyone has that much time on their hands, however, I get it. Love Xenoblade to death, it's brilliant, easily one of my favorite franchises in general.
@PretzelYT5 ай бұрын
I guess I was maybe a tad too harsh on the combat. I think the positioning, aggro-management, and party bar (whatever its called) do an alright job to keep combat engaging. I just prefer turn-based or more actiony RPGs. And I did the same thing when doing side quests hahaha, I'd binge some youtubers I've been meaning to watch. I guess that's another way it's like an MMO. You can find stuff to do if you just wanna deal with the mechanics of the game, but if you want story during that play-session, you can really focus on the main quests. I appreciate Xenoblade for that.
@SPContis5 ай бұрын
I'll defend the meaningless sidequests in the sense that if you're not going for 100%, which I wasn't, it's nice to just accept a bunch of quests and just complete whichever ones happen naturally as you move along. Also, I guess from your video that you didn't find the Nopon drug ring sidequest chain. That one's a riot.
@PretzelYT5 ай бұрын
Oh my god, I did stumble across that while making my first tour of the game. I literally discovered it while I was writing the script and talking about the hole with Zazadan in Satorl Marsh. I remember reading that another sidequest line loops back around to that in frontier village or something? I gave up on 100%ing the game by that point and was just doing them if they were convenient. Yeah, that one was definitely fun.
@SPContis5 ай бұрын
@PretzelYT Yeah there's a whole stretch of quests between Frontier Village, Alcamoth, and Satorl marsh. That end up revealing a Nopon named Bana as this drug kingpin of sorts, and you have a boss fight against him. He comes back for revenge in Future Connected. Speaking of Future Connected, there are also some quests in the main game relating to Teelan and Tyrea that provide a bit more context to the dlc. The Tyrea quests are fully voiced too.

One of my favorite ‘RPGs’ is called Franken. It’s free to download, very short, and extraordinarily charming. Every little interaction has so much character and I love all the secret little spots. I don’t know if it would fit more with this series or your vibes-based videos, but I high recommend it.

Something I've noticed during my playthrough of this Xenoblade was that I actually enjoyed the gameplay of the epilogue more than the main game. Particularly because it's only one area, you really get to sucked in the world and want to explore every nook and cranny. With the main game, you always want to get to the next story beat because the stakes are so high but here it feels more relaxed. I probably enjoyed the Nopon prospector quest more than anything in the base game because it gave a tangible reward that was more than just more money or exp. Also because of some streamlining like not needing to craft gems and the lack of a skill tree.

Lemme throw out a few weird ones: Magical Vacation/Magical Starsign(sequel), Soma Bringer, Spectrobes (a jrpg made by *Disney* of all people, and the final(?) game on the Wii seems to be very Xenoblade inspired), Panzer Dragoon Saga, Parasite Eve 1 & 2.

Spoiler zone: Its Mecha Fiora in Smash Bros, because at the time Fiora gets her human body back, Shulk doesnt even have the Monado anymore. Monado-Shulk in Smash Bros is a version of Shulk before the end of the story of XC.
@PretzelYT5 ай бұрын
🤔Good point. Though I still might have avoided showing her with her metal body to people who might be unfamiliar with the series, that's supposed to be a pretty big reveal in the game. 😅

@@PretzelYT Having Fiora in at all, a character that supposedly died at the very beginning of the game, spoilers that she returns eventually anyway. Having her also in her human form would just spoil her ending on top of that, when the game builds up a bit of uncertainty if she will be able to survive with that mechon body or not.

Xenoblade has quickly become one of my favorite games of all time. The story and setting are just incredible. I do agree that the combat can at times be a bit ehh but it can also have its amazing moments as well. You probably have a massive list of RPGs to look at but if your interested in a couple somewhat lesser known but very well liked ones I would recommend are Crosscode or WitchSpring R. I don't want to spoil anything just in case but I picked up both randomly cause they looked neat and they became some of my favorite games.

Honestly, I'd say more broad is fine. I think it will be more interesting to see you compare games that aren't _too_ similar. Also, I haven't played many (J)RPGs myself, but I _have_ Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5. They're flash games with a lot of humor, but I think if you actually analyze them seriously there's a lot of genuine quality to them as well. The way the characters interact with each other and the world, the ways they grow, the sometimes-subtle-sometimes-not world building and lore, it's surprisingly good for a game series that's also half-parody of the genre.

My favorite RPG is the one where you have to go on a quest to get grandmas Crazy pills so she stops beating you with a spoon and forgetting your mother is her daughter but in the end she just dies and yeah it's sad but really it's better for everyone because who wants to live like that anyways. I forget what it's called either because I just made it up or I've been taking grandma's crazy pills, you decide. Life really is a choose your own adventure type deal.

When I first played the game I also thought it was just okay and a little boring at times. However I then entered the Xenoblade flow state and reached nirvana. The combat suddenly became satisfying and addictive. The side quests became like power moons from Mario odyssey. It really hits all the boxes on my checklist addiction. The affinity system glued me to the screen and allowed me to physically bond with these characters. It was truly a complete 180! Xenoblade 1 has my favorite overall favorite gameplay in the series now, but XC2 and 3 just go places narratively that XC1 didn't come close to for me. I don't know where I'd rank it within the franchise, but I would definitely put it up in the crème de la crème section of JRPGs

That's an interesting way to say it. I had a similar experience, I tried playing this game twice before and dropped off both times. But in this playthrough, once I got past Makna Forest and into the Eryth Sea, I was vibing with it.

XC is pretty great. Not my favorite in the series, but a really solid game! Another series I can recommend is the Trails series starting with Trails in the Sky 1. All the sidequests pay off by fleshing out the world. The entire Trails series plays on the same continent, so you sometimes just meet characters from smaller sidequests or other games later and it is always great! The first game is a pretty slow game when it comes to action and high stakes for the first halve, but that's because it first focuses on building the characters and the world and expend in scope when you get more familiar with everything. A really nice atmosphere coupled with great characters and just a certain charm.
@PretzelYT5 ай бұрын
Mannn I finished the first Trails in the Sky some years ago and LOVED it. Unfortunately I didn't dive into the other games because it feels like they only get 10% discounts on steam.😅 Which is kinda annoying when there's like 8 games in the series that I'm basically committing to once I buy the 2nd game. But who knows. Maybe I'll do a video on the first Trails in the Sky some day and see if people around here like it. Getting some videos out on the game would make the unfortunate pricing not as big a deal.

I'd probably check out the original. For the most part, I like sticking to the first released of a game. Kinda like you pointed out, remasters rarely capture everything that made the original game unique. Even just stretching the game from 4:3 to 16:9 and rendering everything at 1080p+ like a lot of remasters do, that completely changes how you experience and FEEL the game.

I only played 3 but had the exact same experience, gameplay is a bit dull, though you do get stuck in after a while and it becomes more fun once you learn all the mechanics. I do think it's over-engineered and too complicated and i'd prefer a more traditional combat system at times. The plot was also slow to get going, but once it did i was hooked, looking to get the first one because i started the DLC for XC3 and it ties into the first one a lot and i feel like i'm missing a lot of the lore having only played the third lol
