I vividly remember all of these maps, me and my brother would spend hours just tinkering around or setting up little scenarios in our heads. Never played much online, we were more interested in just hanging out with ourselves and setting up little scenes, driving vehicles, or killing each-other over and over again. I really envy that time we had together, we’re both grown and work all time time or have other commitments. Never really thought about that being a bonding experience until now, very fond memories of Garry’s mod.

You didn't mention the earliest gm_construct maps having a panel in the map itself to spawn ragdolls and props, since back in the day, garry's mod had not yet implemented a spawn menu you could just open up whenever. It's a neat detail, even if it doesn't concern the video's topic too much.

I always got this very specific feeling everytime I play GMod. It’s like… a mix between coziness, unease, and nostalgia. It has THE liminal feeling. Me and some buddies love making entire hangout rooms in specific parts of maps with a tv and some snack props because although the map can look dull and empty, it somehow still feels comfy.

even just one minute into the server im already looking at the map and thinking how damn good of a map it is. two big towers to test verticality, bumpy grass to test gravity and hills, a big lake to test water, even a catwalk above the lake to test dropping into water from a height. dark rooms to test light sources, light room to test dark sources. a whole suite of sandbox to play around in. it's hard to tell what's truly so sandbox about it until you look at it like this, but you can really touch every feature of the game here in such a compact space!

it’s strange how no matter whether a newer player or playing since the beginning, everyone seems to have the same feelings about Gmod maps. I feel like it’s truly just a part of the charm of Garry’s mod in the first place. I’ve been a fan of it via videos since around 2014, but only had the ability to actually play the game around last year, and while i’m absolutely loving it i didn’t expect the “ambiance” or feeling everyone got to happen to me, too. Second of all, got this video recommended and i’ve gotta say, i love what you’re doing! watching your video on Minecraft’s aura on my tv and i’ll say you’ve definitely got another person on board. best of days to you and keep at it… and thank you greatly for the subtitles on videos.

i love pushing gmod to its limits, seeing what its capable of. my proudest moment was when i perfected my entirely vanilla plane. no mods, just the airboat, some fences welded on for wings, and thrusters on the bottom. the most interesting thing about "Bessy the Hovercraft" was that it actually required a runway to fly properly, just clicking the thrusters while sitting still will make it flip over, but by driving for a second then clicking it, the aircraft flies.

In rp_downtown_v4c_v2 there's an easter egg in the subway area. It basically consists in a trapdoor that when you open it, there's a model of Judith Mossman laying on a couch with a knife close to her, as if she was killed, and when you get close to the model you will ignite and die. To this day I've never seen someone talk about this easter egg before

Not sure if anyone said this but it reminds me of a chapter in the book “coraline” (or the movie) where coraline is exploring the realm the other mother made but the more she explored further out, the more the buildings just seem to look empty and have nothing in it, it’s just hollow and it’s only purpose is to seem like the other mother world is populated with people . I guess it’s like the gmod setting with all the empty back rooms like buildings but yet it still somehow feels comforting

Aww, he didn't show the wholesome iterations of GM 6 through 8 that I had my peak experiences with. The map was just the right amount of form and function. Not as simple to feel bleak, restricted and beta-like but also not as harshly remixed to feel gimmicky, puzzled and uncanny like later releases. Good times were had back then on my little server. I miss this era.

okay i have to say, the most "biggest, sparesly decorated" maps i used to seek out often ! some addons, like WAC aircraft or Gbombs need that space to be used properly.. a lot of space can help you make your own racetracks too, something you really could not do on construct. decorating little rooms was also common, they were simply larger maps that allowed you to do whatever you & your friends felt like at the time-

It's REALLY cool seeing someone talk about gmod in a way that was similar to how I enjoyed it- growing up, my brother was much more intense about it being a shooting game and the only point is to find ways to kill each other- and while that's really fun sometimes, when I finally got my OWN computer and got my own copy of the game, I would scour the workshop for ragdoll addons and download them, and set up little scenes for HOURS. Like yeah, I murdered, too, but there's something so sweet about just sitting there carefully moving your mouse and holding down the e key to get the position of a soda can juuuust right. I have 3000+ hours on gmod- and I still get the exact same rush of delight playing it as I did when I was in middle school. It's really cool seeing someone dissect the maps and how fun they are- even if they're a bit uncanny(i used to think i was just a paranoid freak for getting unsettled sometimes, lol. It's great to hear people feel the same). TY for this video, I'll be sure to check out your others, too :D

I along with a friend of mine who ran a stormchasers server called Doppler Gaming around 8 years ago were actually experimenting with map making, going so far as making a flatgrass map with all of the tornadoes from the stormchasers series maps. Of course that involved a lot of 'ripping' from the original maps, and getting us into all sorts of trouble, but it just shows how far someone would go to make a simple map more complex than it needs to be.

the sensation youre describing feels like the basis for the liminal spaces subreddit, which seems to consist of empty spaces intended for people, but mysteriously lacking any human presence, like condemned indoor malls with nothing but empty storefronts, which seems to describe gmod maps perfectly, down to the spaces clearly intended for specific things, but missing those very things.

Seeing you talk about all these changes to the map that I've never even seen as if they're some shared nostalgia is messing with my head. The last update of construct I remember is the expansion of the garage with the white/colour room, it's kinda funny to see that at some point they decided to take the skybox apartment buildings and just recreate them out of brushes, it's a nice addition and feels like it hasn't even changed the map, we're just sort of exploring a little more of what was already there. I think what makes a map that feels like construct is those red and white wall textures, the clean concrete and grass, unsupported concrete ramps and an overall "in construction" aesthetic. Construct has a really excellent colour palette that you could break down into a really minimalist design and still recognise (and I just remembered Ultrakill does just this for its sandbox mode)

You just gave me a reason to play my old fav game again. I just built a ton of crap for thousands of hours in construct or some workshop maps, drove around with modded cars, built my own cars or gas stations. I just love gmod. Sadly ecept my brother nobody was as interested in this as I was. So i stopped playing to switch to games my friends play. But no game except gmod gave me the same endless satisfaction in every aspect of the game. I am still sad about my hacked old steam account with my builds and all... Thousands of hours of playtime almost gone. Just stored in my memories. Setup 2-factor auth everyone. Dont let hackers take what is most precious to us!

Came into this thinking it would be a cheap copy of The Librarian’s GM commentaries, but was pleasantly surprised to see it was a completely unique take on it. Great video, subscribed.

i'm glad you brought up gm_10 - it's also when i started playing, and PC gaming in general. it's an oddly friendly memory. Honestly, the construct-like maps were always my favorite. Different approaches on that "weird, unfinished but inspiring city area" aesthetic.

This video was the video that convinced me to play Gmod, I already had it but didn't understand it, I wasn't into source games back then either so to me Gmod was a weird game that had props that did seemingly nothing and nothing to really do, I didn't even know how to spawn NPC's or use the tool gun. One late night I was watching youtube and found this video, I watched it and something about its simplicity and sandbox nature made me engrossed in it. I think it just opened up to me what Gmod could do beyond just letting you spawn in props. That intro got me hooked immediately cause I didn't know you could spawn in zombies, I didn't think to decorate the world and all sorts of things. So if by chance the creator sees this than thanks! If anyone else read this then thanks for reading and have an amazing day

I think most source game, like half life 2 and portal have the "unsettlingness" you talk abt. You always feel alone in portal 1 and in half life its usually pretty dark

That movie had like 3 or 4 different endings when it was first released in theatres just to throw all the audiences off! absolute baller move if you ask me and fits the board games vibe perfectly! ^-^

i had no idea that the little secret credits room was in construct. there are so many hidden things in valve games i know it's a facepunch game or really a garry game, but it's still got the same weird secrets that valve games have

I remember begging my Dad to get me Garry's Mod with the CSS bundle on Steam in 2012, because I was interested in the animatic side of GMod. Then realizing I could create anything and everything I could have wanted, I always would use different camera mods to pretend-film my experiences. Overtime i learned how to make scenes, a favourite of mine being a party setting, or Knuckles saving tails. It really helped send my creative vision into overdrive with my works in music now. This game will always have a special place in my mind.
