I vividly remember all of these maps, me and my brother would spend hours just tinkering around or setting up little scenarios in our heads. I really envy that time we had together, we’re both grown and work all time time or have other commitments. You didn't mention the earliest gm_construct maps having a panel in the map itself to spawn ragdolls and props, since back in the day, garry's mod had not yet implemented a spawn menu you could just open up whenever. It's a neat detail, even if it doesn't concern the video's topic too much.

Not sure if anyone said this but it reminds me of a chapter in the book “coraline” (or the movie) where coraline is exploring the realm the other mother made but the more she explored further out, the more the buildings just seem to look empty and have nothing in it, it’s just hollow and it’s only purpose is to seem like the other mother world is populated with people . I miss this era.

okay i have to say, the most "biggest, sparesly decorated" maps i used to seek out often ! some addons, like WAC aircraft or Gbombs need that space to be used properly.. a lot of space can help you make your own racetracks too, something you really could not do on construct. decorating little rooms was also common, they were simply larger maps that allowed you to do whatever you & your friends felt like at the time-

It's REALLY cool seeing someone talk about gmod in a way that was similar to how I enjoyed it- growing up, my brother was much more intense about it being a shooting game and the only point is to find ways to kill each other- and while that's really fun sometimes, when I finally got my OWN computer and got my own copy of the game, I would scour the workshop for ragdoll addons and download them, and set up little scenes for HOURS. Like yeah, I murdered, too, but there's something so sweet about just sitting there carefully moving your mouse and holding down the e key to get the position of a soda can juuuust right. I have 3000+ hours on gmod- and I still get the exact same rush of delight playing it as I did when I was in middle school. It's really cool seeing someone dissect the maps and how fun they are- even if they're a bit uncanny(i used to think i was just a paranoid freak for getting unsettled sometimes, lol. It's great to hear people feel the same). TY for this video, I'll be sure to check out your others, too :D

I along with a friend of mine who ran a stormchasers server called Doppler Gaming around 8 years ago were actually experimenting with map making, going so far as making a flatgrass map with all of the tornadoes from the stormchasers series maps. Of course that involved a lot of 'ripping' from the original maps, and getting us into all sorts of trouble, but it just shows how far someone would go to make a simple map more complex than it needs to be.

Seeing you talk about all these changes to the map that I've never even seen as if they're some shared nostalgia is messing with my head. The last update of construct I remember is the expansion of the garage with the white/colour room, it's kinda funny to see that at some point they decided to take the skybox apartment buildings and just recreate them out of brushes, it's a nice addition and feels like it hasn't even changed the map, we're just sort of exploring a little more of what was already there. I think what makes a map that feels like construct is those red and white wall textures, the clean concrete and grass, unsupported concrete ramps and an overall "in construction" aesthetic. Construct has a really excellent colour palette that you could break down into a really minimalist design and still recognise (and I just remembered Ultrakill does just this for its sandbox mode)

One late night I was watching youtube and found this video, I watched it and something about its simplicity and sandbox nature made me engrossed in it. I think it just opened up to me what Gmod could do beyond just letting you spawn in props. That intro got me hooked immediately cause I didn't know you could spawn in zombies, I didn't think to decorate the world and all sorts of things. So if by chance the creator sees this than thanks! Ive spent hours building cities on many construct maps. They're my beloved creations for sure. Functional Flatgradd is one of my most used maps for city construction.

I remember begging my Dad to get me Garry's Mod with the CSS bundle on Steam in 2012, because I was interested in the animatic side of GMod. Then realizing I could create anything and everything I could have wanted, I always would use different camera mods to pretend-film my experiences. Overtime i learned how to make scenes, a favourite of mine being a party setting, or Knuckles saving tails. It really helped send my creative vision into overdrive with my works in music now. This game will always have a special place in my mind.

gm_construct_solyanka is another version of gm_construct that combines multiple maps together, also the dark room is lit up.

I'd love to see you look at some of the TTT maps. They were a bit more intentionally designed, but all of the secret rooms and features made for very fun design.
