Preventing a plague: Fighting Kenya's locusts - BBC News

There are increasing fears for food security in East Africa, with mounting evidence of a new wave of desert locusts.
Earlier in the year, billions of the insects destroyed crops across the region - with the UN warning a second generation would be even more destructive.
Now, despite international efforts, those fears appear to be coming to pass.
When the first wave hit, Albert Lemasulani gave up his life to fight the swarms - leaving his family, his goats and his newborn son behind to try and prevent a plague.

@@tomlglife how would you feel if locusts were eating crops or whatever from your farms. You would want help and then people like you would be like 'oh nooooo who cares about this out stuff about politics or whatever' and then you can't get help. So this type of news is important aswell.

The locust swarms hang like shimmering dark clouds on the horizon in some places. Roughly the length of a finger, the insects fly together by the millions and are devouring crops and forcing people in some areas to bodily wade through them. Near the Kenyan town of Isiolo on Thursday, one young camel herder swung a stick at them, with little effect. Others tried to shout them away. I researched the possiblilty of Eating the locoust instead of starving or depending on the UN. Locusts are a type of insect from the family Acrididae and also are known as grasshoppers. Locusts swarm in huge numbers and can travel great distances, causing considerable damage to crops. However, in many African, Middle Eastern and Asian countries, locusts are considered a delicacy and eaten in abundance. Locusts are an excellent source of protein and contain a variety of fatty acids and minerals. Although not considered palatable by most Americans, locusts are an important food source in many other countries. tired of seeing starving children or dying children waiting on the UN to eat. Mark 1:6 don't worry about being shamed by the white man The locoust eat your crops , you eat them. Your sincerly Monte Cagle. Please pass this on and maybe the right people will see and consider this.

@@christinejones826 since you dont live here, let me enlighten you. "Funds" would never make it to their intended goal. If you were to mpesa a person directly, the government would step in to "tax" the funds. Then start the huge queue of people lined up for their bribe. From *every* local chief and community leader to the chief of police and each of the county representatives. With luck, 10% of the money would be left to apply to any perceived program. If you used a local "charity", after tax would still be the line of bribes and the charities fees for handling it. Trust and honesty are first world luxuries. Find a local chef. Buy him a flock of a couple hundred chickens (and prepaid vet services to handle things like Newcastle disease) not to mention prepaid water (13€ per 20 liter jug) and transport to get it there. ETA : 1 gallon of water per day for 5 chickens. 200 chickens = 40 gallons per day. 104€ daily just for water. And when the locusts move - every day or two ... lather, rinse, repeat.
