Sewer surcharge for both foul and surface water drainage is often overlooked in both Property Flood Protection (PFR) and perimeter protection schemes.
When a flood survey is conducted, the construction and drainage must be considered alongside the risk and client requirements.
At Flood Protection Solutions Ltd we have in-house Civil Engineers who can advise on backflow protection for both residential and commercial sites.
When installing flood barriers or walls etc, it is important to remember that this can create a head of pressure one side of the barrier, which thus encourages backflow through sewerage pipes due to the pressure differential. It is essential that this aspect is considered in any flood mitigation scheme.
Sewer flooding is especially common in built-up areas during heavy rainfall events where the drainage systems can be easily overwhelmed, as we saw in the London 2021 summer floods.

All sounds very useful but who does a drainage survey and how can I be sure the people I employ know enough about drainage to sort out the problems in the ways suggested by you? I have had a flood survey done by your company some years ago but quite honestly I don ‘t trust anyone to do the work suggested by you.
