Join ArtistsNetwork.tv and artist Lian Quan Zhen to preview his video, Improve your Watercolor with Chinese Techniques, as he shows you how to introduce Chinese painting techniques into your watercolors so you can relax your painting style. Using only watercolor brushes, paints and paper, Lian explains how to use the materials to bring in the brushstrokes and style of Chinese painting.
After painting a few small studies designed to get you comfortable with the watercolor techniques of spraying, paint spattering, finger painting and using your brush in new ways, Lian moves on to paint a pair of ducks in a sunset-filled pond combining traditional and Chinese watercolor techniques. By the end of this video, you'll have be able to create beautiful, spontaneous pictures and, most of all, to have fun while you're painting.

For those that don't get this, it is a technique demonstration, not a finished work. He is amazing artist, and his finished pieces are beautiful.

I took a five day workshop from him a few years back & did some of my best work. Besides being a wonderful teacher, he is an absolutely delightful man with a dry subtle sense of humor.

I'm so glad I stayed with this video instead of prejudging the technique, which is sooooo easy for us artists to do when we are taken out of our comfort zone and introduced to something new. This is so Zenlike inits approach and simplicity! I can't wait to try it!

I've seen this done blowing through a straw. This is similar to pouring watercolors. If you use masking and remove after everything is dry, that's fun too. Vids like this show you another way and yes, loosen up:)

This is just the preview which is why there is not much actual content. I've seen a few of his full videos and they are great! I find that most artists are actually more than helpful and love to share their techniques, actually.

I think his approach is great for a beginner like myself who is so accustomed to drawing tight specific detailed linework in pen and ink and pencil. I can see how ths method would instantly tae me out of my comfort zone and FORCE me to flow and go with the process.
