Hey Andy, as you can see people have very strong feelings about the show, both for and against. I personally enjoyed the story and characters so far, and was particularly impressed with the set designs and special effects for a TV show. People are quick to forget how rough the first couple seasons of TNG were. For all the people complaining about the price of the lighting kit for what you get - it isn't for you. For someone who has never built a circuit or soldered anything, how much time would they need to invest in learning how to approach lighting a starship model? I'm not even talking about materials costs, I'm talking about the time needed to learn about current, voltage, resistors, math, and new techniques, and hoping they did it all correctly and not blow out their entire purchase. If they think that's 4 hours of research and work (an underestimate for most), they can decide whether it's worth $20 an hour to them to figure out, or just pay the price up front for something that will work with minimal fuss. It's not hard to imagine someone wanting to spend their hobby time building more models instead of learning about resistors, but wanting a nice lit Enterprise. Also, be glad they offered this separately so you don't HAVE to pay for it, and you can put your own together. I'm certain there would be more anger if there was only one boxed option of $125 for ship and lighting kit. My personal gripe about this release are the Aztec decals not being included with the ship. Oh, in the US Discovery is only available on CBS All Access.

My local hobby shop still hadn't recovered from the labeling fiasco when covid started. It's a shame that Tamiya America decided to base their operations in california. Andy, both shows went wildly "Progressive" political, but the ships (and models) are indifferent to that. I'm not crazy about the whole design of the ship in ST:D or certain other visual elements (I find what they did to the Klingons unforgivable) but your mileage may (probably will) vary.

Great looking Enterprise which is let down by the writing on Discovery. The first season is if I am honest terrible, but the second season (forget about cannon) is better. Personally I am not a fan of most of the post Jar Jar Abram's movie, but Picard was pretty good and that bodes well for season 3 of Disco. I'm not expecting it to show the sort of marked improvement we got with TNG, DS9 & Voyager by season 3 because the general standard of telly writing today is pretty awful because of focus groups stifle creativity. Having slagged Discovery off, I will say it is worth the watch, even though it offers nothing ground breaking to the viewer unlike the original.

Hi Andy. I love your reviews and builds. I have a question though. The Enterprise NCC 1701 is supposed to be the same type of ship in the Old Star Trek universe as in the Discovery one with just a few changes. TOS was set just 10 years after events in Discovery. This is why in Discovery Season 2 they sent Discovery 900 years in the future to preserve the timeline we know. To the models now. Polar lights have issued several versions of 1/1000 scale NCC 1701 and they including the Refit version are just under 10 inches long. Now this model still in 1/1000 scale is 18 inches long!!?? I am not a rivet counter and this is a truly amazing kit but twice as long?

I haven't tuned into "Discovery" yet but did enjoy "Picard" and thoroughly enjoy "Lower Decks" now. I know there are a lot of negative waves out there about the former, but I appreciated the more realistic and lifelike look to it and their flaws, which, after being a trekkie since the early 70's felt refreshing. Also good to see characters in real clothes and not some costume designer's idea of what clothing would look like in the future-- utterly impractical and uncomfortable. "Lower Decks" is a hoot--- think "Galaxy Quest" type of sarcasm and not afraid to poke fun at many of the tropes. Plus, "buffer time" is real even today.

Andy a lot of people hate the new series but as with any new series it has to find its footing. It isn't that bad, the second season is better than the first. The set design is reminiscent of the new Star Trek movies. But you have to take into account that technology for building more realistic sets is better than it was 50 years ago. And that new Enterprise is a real beauty!
