Yes, I think you're being a little harsh, and I'll tell you why I feel so. Video calls and app - If you've used the competing devices to make video calls, you'd know that the video call experience in Portal is far superior. To call someone using those other devices, they need to have Alexa app or Duo installed. This one supports Messenger and WhatsApp as first-party apps - most people I know already use it for communication - this is just another 'portal' to get into these platforms. Price - Portals generally see big price-cuts and discounts. For example, the 15.6" Portal Plus Gen 1 was discounted to $99 a few weeks ago. 8" Portal Mini could be bought for $60. I do agree with your thoughts on Portal+ price not making any sense. Portal Go is a great use-case, top-end video calling made portable - as someone who is already into this platform, I'm looking forward to see how it really works. There was no mention of runtime on battery or battery capacity anywhere which is sus though. I think its' real competition though is iPad with centre-stage which is much more versatile. One way to compete is to lower the price as usual.

You are missing some of the capabilities. It does more than make video calls. It's not as full featured as a tablet but neither are Alexa and Google Nest smart devices either. This has Alexa built in which makes the Plus version a supersized Alexa Show. It has Plex to stream media and live TV, has music streaming apps, web browser and KZbin, can be used as digital picture frame with rotating photos, has recipe apps as well as step by step recipe instructions through Alexa which makes it useful to have in a kitchen. I like the 1st gen Plus for the 15.6" screen to stream my Ring and Wyze security camera feeds by voice command. I bought a few of them when they were clearanced at $99 to make way for the 2021 models and at that price it's amazing. It also has bluetooth so it can be connected to an external speaker or headphones. The 1st gen Plus additionally has a usb c output so it can be outputted to a TV or larger monitor if desired. Not sure if the newer models also have the usb c out.

Even though the original older Portal Plus is 15 inch, it has 16:9 aspect ratio (a wider but less taller screen), 1920 × 1080 (2073600 pixels), 140 degree wide angle camera. The new one at first glance looks like a downgrade due to being one inch smaller at 14 inch but actually it's not because now it uses a grand 3:2 aspect ratio (much taller screen), resolution of 2160 × 1440 (3110400 pixels) - far more pixels overall and higher resolution video stream. Yes it's non-rotatable and has a 130 deg wide angle camera. Those are downgrades. Another concern is that the new one may not have a TV out via USB-C in which it would be a downgrade to the original Portal Plus.
